Lightbulb My illustrated version of OUYA interface

This is a Copy/Paste I made of my own post at the official http://forums.ouya.tv

Hi my name is Wender Annel. I am a Graphic Designer and Wanted to show you some of the things I had in mind. I don't have an OUYA yet because I wanted to wait until official release and I'm not a developer yet because Im still learning about game development. But I've been watching lots of videos from developers and users. also I have been following OUYA since 3 o 4 days later they made the Kickstarter campaign. and so here's my presentation:

We all have seen the first illustrated design the OUYA UI had. and since then it got me thinking about some changes but I wasn't able to design something since my PC broke on march '12. I was able to have another I found on august '12 but it wasn't good enough until I managed to repair it well on october '12. OUYA was making progress and I was always looking forward on it by reading and viewing stuff. later on the Dev kit was out and the UI had minimum changes. but something still was bothering me about the UI. so I decided to make something up hoping members, developers and OUYA team like it.

I present you My OUYA UI:

You guys are wondering now. "why the hell he used that background, the color of the letters and other stuff" but all of that will be answered. You see I always read about how the ouya background wasn't that good to look at and so I changed it to a background I made by looking at the NVISION APP black dots live wallpaper in witch it only move on Tegra devices. I really like it but the point on here is that it would be nice to have the background users wants and that's why I made the letters that way so that no matter what background has, the letters never disappear. I also improved the buttons, bottom bar, and the date and time on top. I'm still not quite sure about the notifications look. as you can see I also made a user name with a round avatar as the O of ouya. and made the improvements to fit any wallpaper.

here's a quick look about basic background changes.

black and white. you may have noticed that the game block also has white frame with shadows on both in and out of the game picture. that's the improvement I made.

different wallpapers. the quality is bad because I exported it as a GIF animation. but still shows what I'm talking about.

    https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_.../block-ani.gif
this is how it would look when selecting something

    Back to main explanation.
APPS: obviously things other than games.
    GAMES: the ouya games downloaded
STORE: to download game and other content to the ouya
MEDIA: content such pictures, videos and a shortcut to the music player it self
SETTINGS: where users manage the WiFi, Bluetooth, app and game manager, controller settings, OS updates, storage space, the security such as a password to your ouya, language input, the factory reset, ouya account signing, date and time.

all you guys know about that, but I added MY OUYA: I thought that this could be the place where you can manage your OUYA profile such as your Avatar, Region location, Bio, and stuff like that. Is also to look at your personal messages, notifications and achievements. and maybe put here the "change wallpaper" option.

I bet OUYA will come with apps something like this. Like I said ouya UI has lots of space on the screen. They only have 2 lines and a BIG BIG BIG HEADER covering almost half of the screen. So.. I made the illustration of something I've send to them for like for ever about the lines and why not have 3 instead.

later on I think "hey this are apps.why not have them like we already have then on the tablet or phone. I mean.. lots of the apps don't take more than 30Mb of space"

so having them on a space of 5x10 with big icons wont make a lot of apps blocks and would be easier to find your app. the ouya is a game console OUYA team should focus on making a great game managing system. (I putted some random apps on the screen).

    GAMES

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

finally GAMES. I really love the way is all put together. (all of this games are xperia play, moga gamepad and normal controller optimized. I just selected them randomly)

oh this games are "last played" only... no problem press A button (options)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

a dark shadow came from the right and your options appeared. As you see it will show you the options of the selected icon (or block as I call it) it also shows how you want to display your games. and shortcuts in "other options" in which those shortcuts will show everywhere except on games since this is only for the UI and the store. shortcuts are great ways to jump from one way to another without going home and look for it. I think no other console has shortcuts.

    select "Alphabetical" and presto.

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

so here it is. 12 games in one whole screen. the order on this screen and every other is from up to down and then pas to the right. except the last played screen that is the big block an then the 2 below that one that goes from left to right and then the other 6 blocks are up to down and goes to left. it isn't hard to understand.

    STORE (home)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

Mind blown in 3.. 2.. 1.. "OMG the STORE!!!"
the store is something else. I used the Official DEV Background of the ODK 0.0.4 because I thought it would be nice that the store has its own background. also thought the possibility about making it a separated APK file of the home launcher. that's why I added a "view downloads" and "view cart" because it would be stuff only from the store. and to make the separated background of the store it would only be made if the store were separated from the HOME. unless they figure a way to make it using the firmware they made and the other stuff like MY OUYA as well.
Any way. this screen will show the featured games or so. it can also be made to put banner announcement like in Google play. special events that a bunch of games have limited time price offers. and stuff like that. I bet most of the members here like that too.

The price tag on the games are made out like the clock because I thought that will fit in. I forgot to make one games written on the tag as "Installed" or "Purchased" sorry about that. you'll get the point.

NEW RELEASES: open this and will only show the games last added to the OUYA STORE.
VIEW ALL: this will show all games like in "GAMES Alphabetical" 12 blocks with the same A-Z display. I was thinking that pressing LT or similar button could show a shadow from the left like I showed on games but on the other side and have there the list of category (racing, action, adventure, etc). and by pressing "options" display as user wants. (rating, A-Z, last added, etc)
ADD-ON: seriously all modern consoles have them (including psp). this just download something that alters the game data is that simple. the thing is that developers know how to do it.
APPS: the app section will show just like in "view all games" on the store and have category as well too. but I'm not sure if they would look like in play store icon and name on the right inside a thin block or like any other block I made. I talking about this because of the thinking I did a while ago. if apps looks like in play store it would fit 24 thin blocks instead of 12 normal blocks.
VIDEOS: I'm not quite sure about this one. but maybe ouya team podcast or game developers podcast, maybe game trailers. I don't know I really don't remember why I put it.
WALLPAPERS: I was thinking that live wallpaper could be in this section and normal WP too. I mean almost every console lets you have WP and since this is android live WP too. maybe it would be good to try it one day. the ouya is 4+1 cpu cores and 12 gpu cores. It wont change that much with a WP. not all people are developers, some are just artist like me. Fan art will fit here and wallpapers from the game developers too.
COMING SOON: this would be the part in where we could find the new games, apps or updates that will come to ouya. maybe other content too such as the future add-ons that will come too.

I forgot to add DEMOS and OUYA NEWS which ouya team and developers would make important announcements here such as double XP for 2 days, server shutdowns, or other important stuff. Making a developer a "Favorite" will instantly provide you all the news via your PM system on the console. Downloading a game could too send you instant PM when developers announce new things about that game.

    STORE (buy screen)

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

clicking a game will send you to this screen to see info and buy it (I was goin to use Canabalt but couldn't resist using MC4)

on top are the buttons to buy or send to wishlist (ouya team could make it favorite button instead). it has the name, the developer. rating and category. below all of it description. and on the left is the pictures or screenshots. a video such like trailers or gameplay. the other info need date launched, version, downloads and size. but I added something important.

If ouya will be a console for everyone to have. that includes parents buying it for their children. and developers with games other than casual games. games with 3 or 5hrs+ of story mode and online gameplay may have to rate their games with ESRB. 2d or 3d, free or sell it doesn't matter. ESRB rates it too. take as an example gameboy advance games. they are 2d and rated as well as any other game. also this way indie developers will make their way in being more recognized by the gaming world. as an indie console ouya is perfect but they need to think about parents too. they will buy anything looking good for their children and so ESRB could be the case for this situation and have the store with a parental control too. if not rated with ESRB on content rating will be low, medium and high maturity.

    MEDIA

Click HERE to view in 1280x768

This is like an internal gallery that shows your downloaded videos and pictures. also shows your screenshots. like on any other gallery you could share the screenshot to a social network or to a friend via PM. on the bottom is a stock music player. I choose the Music Player for PAD/PHONE because its free and its a well good made music player but there are several good players too out there like double twist, poweramp, playerpro, xplay, and others. It would be good that the internal video player could read different video codecs and not just MP4.

See Music Player PAD HERE on play store

Any way. I was thinking that maybe all the blocks including the one of the games and the store could have the labels I putted here. but not on the store home, just the other places of the store like in view all and new releases, and so you know where. it would be great to label the blocks. that way the block would have only the art without the logo. some game logo are hard to read.

Well I think this is all. I hope you members and ouya team like it. it took me several days to make this and some hours to write down all here. I am willing to give the .PSD file to the OUYA team if they want it and take it seriously. this is my gift to OUYA something to combine with OUYA's ideas and designs. thank you for reading.

    hi there

Umm, well. I can hardly criticize the Ouya UI since I never had my hands on it. It seems you invensted a lot of time into your proposal and some of it looks good. But I'm not sure if you are wasting your time. Please don't take any offense now but the idea to make new skins or to develope the UI isn't mindblowing. And a lot of your drawings remind me of the ps3 UI and its store. There's nothing in this thread which is actually new or exceeds the current UI's I know. Nothing where I'd say that's something the guys from Ouya / skin developers most likely won't come up with

    Sorry. :-/

I see in the OUYA store, you have prices next to games. In actuality I think all games will show up as free. Prices will be charged for upgrades, dlc, in game purchases, additional levels, additional time playing the game. At least that's how I understand the Free to play model they plan on using.

Other than this, I really like your design. I think it looks great!

yep I already heard this stuff on the official forum as well. and as well nobody really cares about my stuff. I don't even know why the hell I'm still designing stuff. any way... maybe its time to really retire. really awkward since I've been a designer last 7 years only.

Don't be so negative! I thought the stuff was pretty cool (as I said before, I'm not a fan of the current OUYA store UI, even if it is just the beta version), and I think it's great that you're enthusiastic enough to take the time and do something like this. The criticisms are not there to attack you personally, but because people want to help you improve and have even better designs in the future!

The OUYA team don't reply much to the posts on the official/dev forums, but they do watch what goes on there, and I'm certain they will be taking into account your work, and the comments people have made on it, when designing the final UI

Also OUYA have repeatedly said they are always open to new ideas and want to hear what the community and fans want, and try and move in that direction. This sort of thing might not have an immediate impact now, but in 6 months time, if you and other fans are making custom UI's for fun and getting good vibes, they might just think about allowing custom skins and such
