I have one of the new controllers that came with the white OUYA and haven't even needed to use it yet. So, most likely the remedy was getting an exchange or refund from Target.
Again, it's different for other people. My controller was the worst POS to ever grace even the dodgiest Hong Kong knockoff shop in Akihabara. The PS3 pad, by contrast, worked well not only on my Ouya but on my phone and PC (even my ps2 pads are amazing).

I would never risk the hassle of ordering an ouya or pad again unless they were easily available in a bricks and mortar shop (which in Japan, they are not). I don't trust the company's build quality. The only other time I'd take the risk is if they came bundled with an ouya 2 (and only if that had loads of new/aaa games from android).

As for the reports online, regardless of how true they are or not, there are significant amounts of complaints about the controllers, including the wifi/bluetooth not working well, usb problems turning off the controller, problems syncing the controller alongside ps3 controllers, spongy buttons, etc. It's not hard to see why or how this would put off potential customers or how it could frustrate existing ones either.

That said, I've grown accustomed to using a ps3 pad. Most of the devs that have stuck around and/or bothered to care about their work have added support our or trying hard to do so. I hope the new ouya can be bought cheaper without an ouya controller too. Thus, I've adapted somewhat to this problem by using a wired ps3 pad. The incidents have reduced my trust in ouya though.
