Hmm... not sure what to advise you then. I believe to do the upgrade you would need the firmware which is not public, and a PROM Programmer. And depending on the method they use to write it on the current one, may just need a new PROM chip.
Maybe someone else will have another idea
why do they had to do it this complex...a simple software update via the ouya would also do the trick.

Not as simple as thatwhen you have devices such as those, firmware has to be implemented and run a certain way. In this case, as Mmartino has mentioned. Some other device cases, you need to plug it in via USB. With Microsoft and Sony, you have to buy another controller (more often than not).

I want to get rid of the auto sleep function real bad. My silver controller never goes to sleep and my back one does, and I hate it. I may just go back to the silver one and let the black one collect dust in the closet or sell it, bet I can get good money for it right about now.
If someone figured out the correct flashing method, they could dump the newer firmware from a controller that already has it, then use that to update the older one. It's plausible, but nobody with the knowhow has stepped forward to do it, and it would never be practical for the average user.
I sent three of my controllers in -- one 102 and two 103 -- to have the firmware updated. I had lag on all three. If it was just me with one controller on, I didn't see a lot of lag...but as soon as a 2nd controller was turned on things got wonky. They also seemed to have issues if there were other bluetooth devices around such as my wife's iPad. All three were updated to 104 and things are CONSIDERABLY better.
I mailed the controllers to OUYA on a Friday, they received them late Monday afternoon, and I had them back in my possession that Friday. I think the turn-around time is awesome.
Anyway, the upgrade helped me -- I suggest anyone with the older firmware to send theirs in...if they are in the USA. Otherwise, like Pat said, shipping could get expensive.
They should get some kind of european outpost for this stuff at least. Germany would be even better. Sending it to the US only for some Kilobytes of firmware update is ridiculous.

Most of the time I keep my OUYA offline: please consider it before inserting a phone-home/always online DRM in your game. If you still plan to do so, please declare it. You don't want pirates, I don't want to be frauded.
