Well it was just an estimation but have a look at amazon, their logo is about the same size
No but I think something in between 1/4 and 1/8 should do fine, or?

Same resolution I'm using and don't see the issue. The navy dead space makes it look bigger than it is which may be why people think the logo is big. But I also have a bigger laptop at 17" where the common size is 15" and still shouldn't be THAT much different but I could be wrong.

Eh... I don't know about this German one. Seems to be just your co-workers being nosy and the fact that you're browsing this forum when you should be working(no offense and I don't blame you). More people would have to speak about the issue.

No matter the reason, the logo is just overly huge. I can't think of any website where the logo takes up so much space. Except Google, maybe. But that's an entirely different situation...

I do agree with you that OUYAForum has a larger than average area at the top, but I wouldn't necessarily blame the logo.

There's a lot of space that's taken by the theme place holders:



The logo alone is 117 pixels high. If the top area were to only depend on the logo it would look like this:

Yes, maybe it's not JUST the logo but it's generally pretty huge.
Let me show you how it looks like on my 1280x800 screen (with the actual forum part highlighted in green):

Also, many people have laptops with 1366x768, which means even less vertical space... and they might have a huge Windows 7 taskbar and maybe also one or more toolbars in their browsers...

At home with my 1920x1200 screen I don't care so much. But on my laptop it's really annoying, especially because there's not really important information up there - and yes, I understand the necessity for the ad banner.

Mine looks the same way but it doesn't bother me. However, if I block the ad and use full screen mode then most of the screen is the information.

I use 1366x768 on my Chromebook when I'm in the sofa and like Schizo said, I just use an adblocker and then it's fine.

If I were to decide, I would put all banners on the side to make the content of the forum start earlier though. But that way the ad spaces aren't as valuable and so on.
