So why didnt the Ouya makers just simply include Play Store?

Thats one of the things I dont understand about the Ouya's development.

Why lock away Play Store, and force Rooting to get it, when its already an Android device?

By unlocking this, we have more access to games, which I assume is what people that buy a gaming console want.

Can somebody explain the reasoning behind locking away the play store?

Because the Play Store wouldn't allow you to download anything because most apps will say "Not compatible with this device". The app developers have to add in the metadata which makes the console able to download. There already is the MOJO and it exactly has this problem having even simple apps like Firefox not work, because it's made for touch devices.

My answer was going to be because they didn't want to make it about phone games on your TV but TimeWalker's answer works too.
Many answers lead back to that same issue along with other reasons which you might have to go to Julie directly for or whoever they have who answers questions these days.

Because when Google says no, you don't do it.

There are a lot of possible reasons, and several of them were probably part of the decision. They'd need a license from Google. It would compete with their own store without making them any money. It contains too many incompatible games and apps. It undermines the image of being a games console rather than a tablet on your TV. It tries to run constantly in the background, taking up valuable memory, and displaying annoying messages when it's forced to close. It isn't designed to be operated with a gamepad. Probably lots more reasons besides these.

Also, please note that it isn't "locked away." It is not included at all until you download it. And unlike Amazon, Google requires their store to be embedded in your system files. That's why you have to root the device to install it.

"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "otherwise you wouldn't have come here."

Another thing with the google play store is that a LOT of games on there are made without controllers in mind while every game on the ouya discover store is dedicated to the ouya control scheme.

It might sound like a waste but in the long run it's going to get better, I already see a huge improvement on what the ouya has to offer compared to say 4 months ago.

At least we have a side load option right now for some of those pad enabled big titles from other storefronts.

Probably the simplest answer really. Cheers!

I'm glad they don't have the play store as it's just full of spam, I've seen the same game with different names so many times, also the point of Ouya is to make it is the small guys get noticed, if Play Store was on it then you would have EA and all the other big names....no thanks.

    Everything above as well.

Because OUYA wouldn't have made any money

If Google Play were on the OUYA, OUYA Inc. wouldn't get a cut of any of the sales made through Google Play. Most phone and tablet manufacturers make their money from selling the actual hardware. However, OUYA opted to have cheap hardware in a bid to drive adoption rates, and make most of their money from game sales.

This is why the Mojo is $250 or whatever (2.5 times the price of the OUYA. That and the more powerful hardware). They make money only on the hardware

If you search around the net you can find lists of sideloaded games with controller support you can side-load.

I've got some really amazing looking Android games to run on my Ouya.
    Thor: dark world
Injustice: gods among us for example.
    But sadly no controller support.

    But they run.
Using a controller with android games is new territory.
Eventually more games will include it.

as companies see these android gaming devices hopefully catch on.
