New Ouya Owner Here - a little disappointed!

Hey everybody, new owner here. I don't want to knock on the efforts of the developers that have pushed something into the OUYA app catalog. There's just not enough of them!

Android has some fantastic things going for it and has some amazing games available for it. That's why I got an OUYA. Sadly, I'm seeing very little selection and I'm disappointed! I want Madden 25. Need for Speed. Badlands. Batman. Spiderman.

What do I need to do? What is recommended? Side load? Root? Revisit my expectations? Or maybe I'm seriously just missing the diamonds in the rough...?

The only thing you really need to remember, is that most android games are not designed with game controllers in mind. So even sideloading them onto the OUYA, means they probably wont work correctly. If you want to see these games ported to OUYA correctly, all you can really do is suggest it to the developers.

I suggest you see if the store you purchased the system from will take it back. If they cant then I give my apologies. Sadly the games you named cant be played on an Ouya and probably never will be.

    Good luck my friend.

Your expectations will need to be altered "slightly"

Aside from emulated games (Which we don't talk about) you won't really see a big name title on the OUYA. Also it's one player game is weak, I never realized how much harder it was to make 1 player games. So right now its strength is multiplayer.

Also we are getting bigger names stuff, you want Madden? Try out Gridiron Thunder instead.

The thing is most of the OUYA games are cheaper, and the console itself is cheaper, so a bit of quality is lost. But the amount of high quality games has gone up a ton since I got mine.

But as a dev I can tell you we're trying, and for the most part aware. We're trying to get better, find bigger teams, cut costs but not quality. For the most part we're not exactly industry experts. But we're getting better, and better devs are being attracted as are better studios.

So yeah right now the best games are the ones that require friends. But we're doing our best and keep looking, there are some unexpected games in there that look terrible but are amazing in hilarity (amazing frog, don't ask me why that game is fun, it is)

    All of the above:

Side loading will get you a few of the games you are looking for. Just understand that not everything will work, and what works will not always work well.

Root will allow you to resolve a few side-loading issues, but is otherwise not really needed or especially useful.

The games you've named run counter to OUYA's mission statement. This is a console for the little guys who normally can't get onto living room game consoles, and that get overshadowed on mobile by Rovio, EA, and Gameloft. If you just want the Android mobile experience on your TV, Madcatz' Mojo console might be what you're looking for, although it will cost you considerably more. If you look at OUYA for what it's meant to be, maybe you'll enjoy it more. That's up to you.

Continuing from the above into "diamonds in the rough", it does sound like you're overlooking an awful lot of great games because you're busy looking for what you already know. Be adventurous. With over 550 games, there would have to be a decent number of gems even just by accident. Some of us have found more great games than we have time to really play. Try checking out Day of the Ouya's weekly recap videos on YouTube to get some hints, or just dig in and start trying everything. Digging through the catalog to find the good stuff is almost a game unto itself, especially when you're new to the system.

If that's still not enough to satisfy you, take a look at some of the recently completed OUYA-related campaigns on Kickstarter and take heart. There is some seriously good stuff on the way in 2014.

I don't see how there's little selection, there's a decent sized selection. Just depends what you're looking for.
But it seems like you are under the impression that Ouya is an Android box and not its own console. Ouya is Android based. People tend to forget Android is an operating system like a Windows, etc.
You can sideload games if you choose, we do have a section here for that where people post their findings on games that work or don't.

I bought my ouya simply to have the best xbmc experience, said to myself ill never play games on this thing, now I play games all the time, go figure.

It is what it is, if you don't like it sell it for more than you paid for it on ebay like the rest of em.

As said above Ouya is not one for the big guys like EA and other big publishers, the Ouya in my opinion stands for originality and innovation, devs don't have to worry about what they add due to cost they are there own bosses and can put any ideas into the game they make.

If you like indie you will love your little Ouya but if you are wanting a next gen experience in terms of graphics and such then Ouya probably isn't for you.

If you want a couple of games to play try

    Amazing Frog
    Tower Fall
    Neon Shadow
    Reaper
    No Brakes Valet

My xbox 360 has been switched on once and then turned off on my Ouya went on again as my only console now.
Creators of Super Renegade Response, Rush Hour Mayhem and Colour Combat

I've bought so many games I can't list them on my sig now lol.

Right now I am hooked on Killing Floor Calamity and Neon Shadow.

My favorite games on Ouya right now are as follows.

    Killing Floor Calamity
    Neon Shadow
    Vertex Blaster
    Night Riders
    Bomb Squad
    Avp Evolution
    Final Fantasy

I am waiting with great excitement for ChronoBlade Full Release.
I encourage everyone to give the full version of ChronoBlade a try on Facebook.
Its a game that will play much nicer on a console with a controller on the big screen.

The Ouya also makes a fantastic media center, XBMC is great.
You have to sideload your Netflix, but it runs great and launches a hell of alot faster than on ps3.

When I bought my Ouya I mainly thought I would use it as a emulator box, I was so wrong.
I love my Ouya and was a purchase that has changed my gaming for life.
I have not touched my ps3 or WiiU since I got my Ouya.

Ouya gaming is fun for me, like it was when I was a kid.

    I'll add to the list:

Vendetta Online (been playing this for a long time)

If you're down for some unique experiences, also check out:

    Vertical Void
    Rose and Time
20.8 percent (this blurs the line of the definition of "game")

The Cave is also worth a look
