GameMaker Studio Standard is currently Free

For anyone looking to get into game development, this might be a good option. I've personally never used it before so I can't tell you much about it, but I've read numerous times it's great for those people who want to experiment but don't know how to program yet. I've read on a few posts you basically just download it, choose "Beta" and let it update to get the free license. Enjoy!

Too bad the Android plugin is $200, guess that is cheap in the grand scheme of things, but expensive enough for my wife to beat me with her purse. XD

Ah too bad, didn't know that. Though it could still be a good option anyways if you want to experiment and see if $200 price tag will eventually be worth it. I'd still personally recommend Unity to everyone, but always good to have options!

I can only recommend Unity if you are doing 3D, any 2D in Unity implies either a paid library or something external like Gameware Scaleform from Autodesk, wich I personally find exhusting as a sole developer.. (and expensive!)

For any 2D I always recommend GM:S, and I actually use that, even with its flaws and twirks.. but as any software, it requires a long learning curve.

PS: Also, it is a bit of a lie that it doesnt require programming knowledge, that is just one of its features (Drag n drop), wich is quite limited. To really use it (and in the porpouse of porting to OUYA), you need to learn its language, GML.

I would say that Monkey (www.monkeycoder.co.nz) is a good choice fro anyone who wants to code for OUYA/iOS/Android/Windows/Mac/HTML5. Its quite cheap and is based on BASIC so is quite easy to learn.

Meh, I'm still gonna get it and take a look, never did a game before mainly apps and services. Who knows, if I can make a game the wife likes she might just beg me to buy it lol.

Hi! I'm here to recommend BennuGD: http://games.pixelatom.com/bennugd-a...s-development/

Easy own language, open source and has been ported to many platforms.

Have you tried any of the new features in Unity 4.3? I'm just curious because I know their most recent push for that update was to provide some solid 2D-specific tools and features.
