OUYA supporting ART in the future? (making Android faster!)

    Hi,

I don't know if many of you have heard about this.
Google is doing some tests with ART, which is going to be their future Android's virtual machine substituting Dalvik.
It's available in Android Kitkat as a debug option, and I've already seen it doing a better work than Dalvik.

In benchmarks Nexus 5 scores about a 25% more with ART than with Dalvik.
In everyday use it goes a bit more smoother, taking 0 seconds changing between apps (no lag anymore). Only a few apps won't work, like Whatsapp.

Would it be a good idea for OUYA to support ART? What do you think?

Maybe the ouya 2 but updating the android version doesn't seem to be their focus. They basically took a flash of android then changed it for their own needs.

That being said if ART will work without undoing all the ouya specific changes it could be a great move for fast app changing and smoother use.

It would be a GREAT idea actually, would speed up the Tegra 3 to make it a bit more usable. Trough as far as I know it doesnt speed rendering that much, it would be for logical routines mostly, but still, an improovement like that is definately good

The problem with OUYA is that they don't seem to be working with their firmware as a branch of the AOSP (Android Open Source Project), they seem to have taken a copy/fork of 4.2 and just work on top of that with no way of upgrading to a newer version of Android without having to rewrite everything all over again.. wich is a HUGE bummer, and will, of course, make it couter productive for them if they try it.

@Timmy you posted while I was writing hahah

I am all for speeding up the Ouya experience.
Just hope none of the games break because of it like Whatsapp.

If games run smoother on the other hand, a couple of victims wont hurt.
They can always update their game.

Aren't most games on Android developed using the NDK? (native development kit) I'm not sure that the new virtual machine would do much to speed up gaming.

P.S. In case you were curious, you were Kickstarter backer number 5 for OUYA. Thank you for believing.

Google acquired FlexyCore recently, and they had a technology with similar goals as ART. Except DroidBooster could plug into any build of Android firmware.

It could be that Google bought FlexyCore to remove a competitor to ART off the market. But hopefully they'll actually make that decoupled technology available to custom Android builds. Unfortunately, I see no real good business reason why they should, but stranger things have happened.

Actually ART is the result of that buy; Flexycore and ART are the same thing..

Actually, A better way of saying it would be "Flexycore became ART when Google bought it"
