Has OUYAForum Helped You With The OUYA Scene?

I think it's time for a family meeting and one that's been on my mind for quite some time. Before I got involved in this community as much as I am right now, I always wondered how OUYAForum affected you when it came to the actual scene itself. For me, I was a guest on this website since about the week of OUYAForum's inception before finally joining back in March and holy-moly did I have a lot to say about everything. I posted so many things in every single thread that I could contribute in that I was claimed a spammer by the old Staff of this website and while I quickly made them eat their sour grapes, I however kept increasing my activity until I had a bit of a falling out. I posted this not so long after my joining and the Staff hick-up I encountered...

    Hi, everybody.

    (The Bad.)
After reading up on everything on these forums, other forums, and some investigating of my own. I have come to the conclusion that I probably won't be getting a OUYA when it finally rolls around. This is due to the constant ups and downs in it's development that has caused my purchase to become weary and the thought of having a OUYA is just not fun anymore because all the wind has been taken out of me. I'm not exactly bathing in phat stacks over here and my roommate is as useful as a lawn ornament. If that lawn ornament drank six packs in ten minutes, pass out on my bed because she's too drunk to figure out what hers looks like, pays bills but at the last millisecond giving me a heart attack, and uses my stuff.

Furthermore, I was on the KickStarter the same hour it was posted but due to complications; I couldn't be a backer and honestly don't regret the shitty luck I had that day because (as I stated before), the massive complications OUYA has had. This includes the controller problems whether it's lag, connection and/or deadzones, the lack of support from android developers and even its own company. For god sakes, the accusations of Julie using our money to fund another KickStarter is obviously a lie but something is up and that's one of the biggest problems I have with OUYA and that is; something is always up. I'm a veteran and an expert on business practices and video games and this is just complete horse-shit. I have never seen a company put a cover on everything and subsequently dig its own grave like this with its own community.

I don't care about the shipping(wah-wah-wah a estimate that was a estimate didn't get met... get over it), most of the applications, most of the games, the controller's design, and the things I need to buy for the best experience. The things I made in bold I'll cover later on, but after all the bullshit from the company itself. Do I want to support it; or at least for right now? Do we even get a say in things as far as when the OUYA 2 will be released? Will the support be strong enough? Even if it's one-hundred dollars, is it worth buying all the extra things to make the experience the best of it's potential? With all the business based problems, can I trust them in the end?

OUYA isn't even released yet so I'm giving it a much deserved break but there's only so much before I'd completely lose all interest. I'm faithful to every indie developers out there and when I say I want to play your game, I'm damn sure gonna do it. The most appealing games are (of course), Beast Boxing Turbo, iMech Online, and Rage Runner; as they are the Super Mario 64 of the OUYA and their experience will be more unique and exciting on the console than on any other platform. No offense to you three and the teams behind it but don't you yourselves struggle supporting a company with a track like this?

(The Good. Note: I'll probably contradict myself a lot but bare with me.)
I know it's probably a too long didn't read post for your attention spans and your just dieing to tell me to stop overreacting and wait, but I have to address some of the amazing things the OUYA has and is capable of before you flame the ever living shit out of me.

The things I highlighted in bold are what I consider a wait and see thing as more applications, games, and lower priced (say memory storage) hardware will be readily available for a easier; richer experience. Other than the controller as I haven't had a hands on video, I KNOW the OUYA will improve in these areas as anything mildly successful would. We already got MineCraft, a game with a huge ass community coming out and if that gets released, we'll be seeing a lot more members here with an interest with the OUYA which means more potential developers and what-not. The OUYA is determined to stay and because of it, we'll be seeing an updated model every year which will help keep interest.

Continuing on.... This is one of the most amazing communities I've had the pleasure meeting with. I love the lot of you and wouldn't consider trading you for any other community and that's a HUGE ass positive for the little white box. It's you guys. I might be 100%(ish...) faithful(ish...) to the OUYA but you guys are pulling %150 out of thin air and it's getting me warmed back up to the idea of owning an OUYA so I can remain with you guys a little longer. I know some of you are downright retarded like *Removed*, some of you are jokers like your pal Spectre, and some of your are even willing to donate to a fellow comrade so he can get a console himself.

The community is the strongest thing any console can have, and this is without a doubt the strongest I've seen in the last few years. Hell, you guys might even beat the Dreamcast and Saturn community if you'd continue to support OUYA after its death... But I imagine I'm not the only one who finds it difficult to slap a hard-earned $100 when I could just as easily buy that rice cooker I've always wanted. Or magic pony, save it, I don't know. I want to know what you guys think about the OUYA and why you are willing to continue to support it and why some of you are willing to wait and see until June. I don't know if I want to stick around that long at all when I could just go ahead and save up for a emergency...

So... Have recent events changed your decision?
Believe it or not but I got beaten and left the OUYA scene for an entire month. The only reason why I had come back was to answer the growing amount of private messages I was receiving along with defending myself as some ridiculous accusations about me were being thrown about which meant some verbal smack-downs. See, I was also a massive troublemaker early on in my OUYAForum career and would just flood the forum including the individual I was targeting with massive amounts of hatefulness which explains what I meant by "smack-downs". It was amazingly satisfying to say the least and if wasn't for my status as OUYAForum Staff, I'd totally regress back into it. Anyways...

After I had all my messages answered, got a few members crying, and other all those other tedious tasks. A few members came to me on the chatbox and had asked me why I had returned which I then replied that it was just to clear a few things up and then a long conversation about my post and why I had said the things I said happened. I'm not going into details(not that I remember the specifics of the conversation), but the end result was me giving the OUYA one last chance that was well deserved. It was because of the members of this community saying all these oddly(at the time) supportive things is why I had the strength to push past my doubts and see where the console was going and now look at it. It's a pretty cool machine, right?

I still stand by what I said all those months ago about the community being the strongest weapon OUYA has, but I also know that the other weapons such as the games coming out are quite lethal in themselves. OUYA is getting bigger by the day and I for one think it's partially because of this community's efforts to support the console like they supported me back then. I've heard more than a handful of people say that this community is why they keep sticking around which you now know I can relate to and I've been having this question on my mind for quite some time. Has OUYAForum helped you out like it did me and all those people, or in some other way?

Re: Has OUYAForum Helped You With The OUYA Scene?

I'm in it for the gadget. Community can suck my balls as far as it matters in my opinion.

That bein said I love this community the members are generally helpful and willing to go out of their way to do so. I have answered tons of questions myself and I feel like I have contributed.

Its one of the ouyas driving forces for sure but people will buy what they think is worth it or even if they just think its cool.

I am definitely a bad person though and will troll/bash as well lol. So everything is multifaceted.

You pose an interesting question, my initial reaction was to just reply something along the lines of, "it's a just a forum" but then I sat here for a few moments and actually thought about the impact it's had. I think in all honesty, I haven't found a more supportive place on the internet where people with interest in the OUYA can come and both discuss what makes it great, and share critical opinions of it. If you follow the official OUYA twitter feed, you'll notice that they reference threads on this forum regularly; it's almost as if this forum has become the defacto place to come if you are interested in being a part of the community. I ventured onto the official forums a few times, but aside from technical help I don't see much going on over there. I wasn't really around for any of the drama you are describing, so I don't really know (or care) what the implications of all that was. However, what I would conclude is that for me, this forum has made me more confident in pursuing the OUYA as a target platform, simply because the community as a whole has been very supportive and constantly tries to help voice an important opinion that helps shape the company and the success for everyone involved.

In the end, it's just a forum and it shouldn't be taken too seriously, but it does have an impact and overall I think it's positive.

I could do without the public staff drama that crops up as well as some of the strangely strong reactions some mods have to some pretty innocuous actions but in general, I feel like this forum has provided a place for developers on the system to connect with lots of users. Its a good thing. And obviously given the amount of purple names I see around, there are plenty of users who value this forum enough to add some financial backing. It has some ... sour grapes to be accounted for but overall its been a useful tool and a helpful community.

I'll get the few bad aspects out of way and then focus on the good:

The silly drama and clumsy moderating are eye-rollers, and if I hear one more word about the stupid chatbox, I'm going to scream. (Just get rid of it or make board bans and chatbox bans separate, as they should be - if possible.)

    However, I love everything else.

This is the place I go to for Ouya information. Here, I can find out what new games have been released, leave questions and comments for the devs, and get information about the latest updates (and a whole lot more). It's a fantastic, informative community.

I actually remember seeing that thread back then.. as I lurked on here forever (feb - march?) before I actually made an account.

I found this community to be a very supportive community as well. It definitely helped support my influence to buy it, but moreso to develop for it because one thing that this community is and will always be, vocal. There is a lot of feedback that goes to Ouya, and developers here, and while there is some (but not often) destructive criticism on some things, positive feedback and constructive criticism far outweigh it now.

It has been a rocky start for many Ouya owners I am sure, and public opinion outside of here certainly doesn't help the situation. But this community is greatly supportive, and I can say I am happy to be apart of it.

I mentioned this once before, but this community very much reminds me of the N-Gage community (yes I owned one). Everyone outside of it either hated it for the sake of hating it, or didn't know what it was. But the community made you feel welcome and always helped provide answers for questions, wanted to play online games together (Here was Order and Chaos, back then was SEGA's Pocket Kingdom) and overall everyone had a good time with their device and each other.

First, as I have said before, the biggest reason why I want OUYA to succeed is that I can't stand the monopoly on video games that the three giants Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft have. I'm not saying they are evil, they are just business oriented, but having no diversity or true choice is absolutely disgusting. I will always cheer for the underdog. I'm also in it because of the, as timmytot666 said, gadget. It's fun to play around with things.

But the question at hand is if I feel this forum has helped me out - at which I must answer not particularly. I'm aware this might sound a bit strange, because you all know (I hope) that I like it here, so I believe an explanation is due.

People log on and talk about when things go wrong, when they need help, when they are frustrated. Much less common is the user who logs on to talk about how much fun they are having. I am of the last category. I sometimes get a bit tired of the speculations, negativity and general distrust in everything Ouya - and then I can, for a brief moment, think stuff like "why do I even bother reading what other people think of OUYA?". And then all of a sudden a new game is announced, a fun thread created, a cool idea emerges... Something happens that reminds me how awesome it is that this is actually happening, and it's by us, not Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft.

That makes me proud to be a part of this forum, proud to own an OUYA, proud that no matter how slow things might feel sometimes - we're "sticking it to the man"! But has the forum helped me? Only in terms of giving me a place to let my personal interest for the OUYA grow.

Starfighter, i am with you. I bought the ouya because of the concept is great and I hoped it would shake up the industry, which IMO, it has. Progress has been slow on some parts, but this is not a company the size of the big 3. This community does surprise me. The love and passion here for the ouya to succeed is amazing. Usually i can get an answer to my question within a few hrs or at the most a few days. Keep it guys
