    Why I love my Ouya

I realize this is a thread that everyone is probably going to roll their eyes at... but I wanted to take a moment and just post exactly WHY I love my Ouya. Having been someone who pre-ordered a retail unit, I've been very excited about this little unit since I got it and even with the odd quirks and small issues that I have with it (and even some of the larger ones... IE: external storage for apps) I've been pretty happy with this unit. But it wasn't until just about two days ago that I really saw how good of an investment this little unit was.

My wife and I just bought our first house last week and we moved in this week. I have an 18 month old that loves to go form thing to thing as he plays, but we have found that certain programs on TV (such as Baby Einstein) really capture his attention and he loves them. Being that we moved in and are in the process of getting home internet and TV installed (tomorrow, yay!) I find myself occupied with my 55" TV most of the time, running internet off my hotpsot on my phone, or watching things via my UPNP drive, playing PC games, etc. However, my little guy can't watch some of his programs he loves when I'm on the TV, obviously. I have a little 32" TV that I carry around with me when I meet at friend's from time to time for some console gaming etc. It's very lightweight and easy to setup. So, when we moved into the new house, I took the little TV, unhooked my Ouya and hooked it up to the smaller TV in the living room. Using the '2Player' (I think that's the name of it) I can easily stream all of my little guy's programs to the Ouya, while I'm in the larger TV for the things I'm doing. My 32" TV (while pretty new) is not a smart TV, therefore, it cannot read any files off a usb drive or play them back like my 55" can.

However, the Ouya remedies this completely.

All my shows, his shows, my pictures, videos, music, etc... I can easily fire up with either XMBC or 2 Player and connect to my UPNP drive and stream to the TV in the living room. I know that a lot of people have thought that the Ouya, even if it failed, was still a pretty good little media streamer for the $99 bucks an I can honestly say this one feature alone has made the investment totally worth it to me. (The only thing that would complete this is NHL GameCenter actually MADE an app native for the Ouya this year. I have side-loaded it, but without hockey season going on, I can't really tell if it will work good nor not.)

I realize that I'm not saying anything that hasn't been pointed out before, but with all the negative attention that the Ouya seems to bring... I just want to say that this is one person that has been very pleased and happy with their $99 purchase, even with some of the quirks that have come along with it. I've played more on my Ouya since I got it, then I have any other console in my house. (Of course, this will change when NHL 14 drops this month. Hahaha.)

I didn't roll my eyes one second. If anything, more positive thoughts and just pure... use, of OUYA, instead of "this is not good, and this is not good", is what I truly want to see.

Since I got my OUYA I have spent like ten hours with my other consoles combined. There's just too much new fun things to check out. Of course, there are a lot of games that need polishing and a lot of problems with the hardware - but there's also a lot of potential, room for everyone to join in and a curious "this game/program/thingy could work" feeling all around.

One other device that comes to mind in this context is the Raspberry Pi. That wasn't about producing a viable replacement for the established and full fledged PC. It was (is) about possibilities, getting people involved, giving everyone a cheaper option, diversity, experiments... All that good stuff you so seldom experience with the big brands, which ultimately just want to make money off of you - not make you want to try your hand at something for yourself.

Edit: I see my fellow staff friends beat me to it - I like that we are all on the same page in this.

Good point. The Ouya feels like what the original Xbox should have been. I know it is odd to say it, but it is the center of entertainment when I have to entertain people.

A few adult beverages and a round of Super Sexy Swiss is so incredibly fun. Reminds me why I work so hard to be an adult.

    Hahaha.. That is hilarious!

I can't wait to take this thing with me to the next video game lock in. I have a friend that holds these about once every 3 months. I'll pack up my PS3 (it is literally a ROOM of Xbox 360 consoles everywhere... and I'm the only one that brings a PS3) and small TV and take it down there. What I find is that through the night, even with all of the football / basketball and FPS games that they have going on.... ALL NIGHT LONG... the PS3 seems to offer them something that they aren't getting anywhere else. I find the oddest games that they pick up and stick with for hours, huddled around the PS3, while Xbox consoles go unattended for hours at a time. No, this is not a PS3 vs. Xbox point... my point is, that I bring something that offers them some variety from what they are used too and it clearly shows me that they are looking for something else, or at least, willing to give something else a shot.

I think the Ouya is gonna be a hit at the next one. I can't wait to bring it and show it off.

The past few times that I have been, games such:

    Buzz: Quizworld
    Playstation Move: Sports Champions
    NBA JAM Tournament Edition
    Little Big Planet
    Ragdoll Kung-Fu
    TMNT: Turtles In Time (Re-Shelled)

have drawn crowds around my console for good lengths of time. I see games like Bombsquad, No Valet Parking, Towerfall, Amazing Frog and In Plain Sight being unique enough that I think it would give them an opportunity to experience some fun games that they normally wouldn't sit down and play, that are also not huge blockbuster 'everyone who is someone owns this', but are sheer enjoyable. (If they could only get MAME's multiplayer sorted out... that opens up another HUGE opportunity for 4 player arcade games, like: Gauntlet, X-Men Arcade, Crime Fighters, Simpsons Arcade... and a ton more!)

I honestly think it will be a hit. I'll be sure to report on everyone's impressions of it. It's a pretty wide ranged age group, mostly younger teens (like 10 - 14), but it goes all the way up to adults and even people like me, that are pushing well beyond 21 years of age. LOL So, despite the quirks (which I hope and remain optimistic will get worked out...) I think this little box has a lot of potential to be a 'group game' pleaser.

AW: Why I love my Ouya

I love my OUYA because of two things:

When I had it fresh, I took it over to a friend's house. He's also into videogames, but the OUYA didn't convince him enough to back it. We fired it up, and after maybe one hour we were down in giggles. Bombsquad mainly, but also some Towerfall and Ice Rage. We had some serious couch fun. I don't remember that happening since I was 14 (I'm 33 now).

The second point is more abstract: I really enjoy being so close to the evolution of this. Sure, it irks me to see all the negative press, all the hate, but apart from that I wholeheartedly enjoy it when a new game is released where you just feel it's a step up. (Clark is my next candidate for this). I almost clap my hands whenever something really cool happens (even XBMC made me very happy, although I use a tablet for my music and watchever (VoD service) for movies). It's so exciting to be a part of it, and to sense the OUYA's growth.

    Hope you can handle up-votes.
    Cause you're gonna get some!

I like my ouya since it's not too big, a little small, but comfy and cozy :3 and I get to try every game instead of just buy it right when you get it. So I have like almost 50 installed games and only one of the games I bought *it was for 99 cents and on a 15 minute sale* so I'm not much of a console player but with the Ouya, you don't need to be

I really enjoyed reading this post!

Personally, I haven't really gotten into the whole streaming/viewing movies on my Ouya thing, as I mainly just use it for the games it offers, but it is great to see that you love that part so much.
For me, this just comes to show that the Ouya console fits a lot of purposes very well, while still being extremely cheap.

Re: Why I love my Ouya

Simplest reason I can give for liking my ouya so damn much: versatility.

    I've used many Many MANY devices through the years. From tiger electronics handhelds to the ipod touch; from android to commadore; neotv to raspberry pi; windows mac linux ubuntu;

After all of these devices I still have my ouya plugged up to my tv right now. With my laptop recently broken I have started using it for email and facebooking; downloading and browsing. I feel like its a viable substitute until I get my rig replaced.

The only thing I use more because I'm at work is my trusty LGL55C(built in keyboard) and it does calls and texts haha.

Next in line I believe is the streaming and media capabilities of the ouya. While xbmc isn't up to 100% yet its doing great things! I have watched so much twitch hulu jtv on my ouya that real tv doesn't even get used anymore (cancelled my subscription). I've also got netflix and youtube for gtv sideloaded so in all of those I never search too far for something to watch. I've also got pandora for music and guitartapp pro to look up chords to practice songs.

Emulation. The way its looking right now I don't have many complaints. Ppsspp is still up and coming, there may even be an ouya optimized version coming out. I have N64oid sideloaded for singleplayer because I LOVE not having to change settings, I also have mupen for multiplayer since it already has setup for multiple controllers. Supergnes is on my ouya as well. Bought the app on play and ouya. Had great gameplay with all the games I had and multiplayer was flawless with wired and wireless controllers of all kinds. Epsxe sideloaded for playstation works with 90% speed for most all games I've been playing.

You can build your own programs and games for free. With all the google you can just learn to make a game and do it.

With all of these things combined; that's why I use my ouya 4 hours every day and love it.
