Site Suggetion: Asylum or Void Forum Section!

In light of recent events I would like to suggest an Asylum or Void forum, a place where members can rant, rave, vent, and post about topics that may be taboo for other sections without the restraints of moderation that would be typically found in the other forum sections.

Not to say anything should be allowed, and no consequences should be put in place for extremely offensive or illegal material, but it may ease a lot of tension in other sections, and give moderators a place to move things without permanently removing members posts who might feel like they are being overly subjective.

This could be used in a very positive manner for the forums as way to let more of the less conservative members have a place to let loose, of course it should be noted that the section might contain offensive, or unrelated material that doesn't reflect the rest of the forum as a whole.

Just a thought, if there are any concerns that something like this might be disastrous or counter productive I would like to here others input bad or good.

This has been suggested before, right when I was first promoted, and most everyone else thought it was a bad idea. I'm in favor of the idea so long as it is only visible to logged in members and not to guests or your average lurker.

I hadn't even thought about that, that is a pretty good suggestion DP

I wouldn't call it a bad idea, just the fact it's been suggested more than once is indication there might be a demand for it.

Lets face it, this is the internet, and your going to run into a lot of diverse people coming from a lot of different backgrounds of what is considered acceptable or not, its okay to rattle a few cages, but at the same time you got open them up for recreation every once in a while.

I have seen similar parts of forums before and they are not pretty. But I see no real reason not to have one, if it's hidden away from guests and lurkers as DrunkPunk suggested. I wouldn't oppose this if it were to happen, but I have a feeling it won't.

When I was a forum admin and webby at CNCNZ.com (one of the largest Command & Conquer Community fansites). We tried this, with mostly no moderation, and relaxed rules.

Instead of describing in detail what happened. I will instead use this video as a metaphor:

Suffice to say. After a couple of months we pulled it. Just wasn't worth the trouble it caused.

Hmm, I haven't ever seen anything like that in my experience. Actually forums sections like that go highly unnoticed except by people that use them or have their post moved to there, if anything it helps contain any disruptive matters in the rest of the forums, so that stuff like a simple warning doesn't turn into user bans or a large number of members being shut out and reprimanded for not being robots, or pretending things are all rainbows and unicorns.

Well the C&C Community at its height was significantly larger than this one. Our forums were pretty steady and did well for the most part. Then when we tried that unmoderated forum, the floodgates opened. We increased site traffic by around 478% and it was like light to the flies.

I had one hell of a job to pop in there removing a whole amount of links to things which promoted pornography, game piracy and certain other things not even the 4-chan community would dare to post. Admittedly there was a huge chunk of people that kept it civil. But there was also a large amount of people who just ruined it for everyone else, and it spilled into other forums like people thought it was OK.

We had a team of about 4 moderators at the time. It was deemed enough before the forum went up. In the end we had to increase our team to double the number and make sure they were at specific places in the world to maintain constant coverage of the forums outside of the hell hole that we created.

When we pulled the unmoderated forum, most left. But we gained some additional members. Some of which are still there today and one is a guy who took my place when I stood down. But from my experience at least. I wouldn't administrate or moderate a forum again which gave anyone the option. I'd been on the staff for 11 years at that website. That was certainly one of the lowest points.

Never seen a section like that produce anything good. Usually end up with things that need a lot of moderation with porn links, piracy, and other stuff. Then when people become members and see this section it turns them off.

Don't people rant and rave here already?
    Who knows.
I don't see it being beneficial but maybe others do.

I've seen forums that had sub- forums that you needed to opt in to. It's an option.
