Windows can share files and folders with connected computers, but it requires fairly complicated permissioning and logins to access those files (and the homegroups feature in Windows 7 and 8 make it very difficult for non-Microsoft software to access those shares).
Windows provides a much simpler solution for sharing media: Windows Media Sharing, which shares just music, videos and pictures using the DLNA media sharing protocol, and doesn't require any passwords at all, as long as you're on a home network.
