Executive Star - OUYA Game Of The Week #1

I've just released a new version of the game and would love to get some feedback on it. Can be anything from deep and serious discussion about gameplay balancing to simply "I don't like the colour" or "That box looks wonky". The game is local multiplayer, but if you don't have anyone to play with, start a new game in "Pass the Controller" mode, and play a few turns against yourself to get an idea of what the game is about.

These are by no means the only questions to ask when trying out the game, but these will give you an idea of what to look for when giving feedback:

    • Have you seen the game in the store before?
    • Did you try it out?

    If Yes:
    • What attracted you to download it?
    • Did it match with your expectations?
    • Why did you eventually stop playing?

    If No:
    • what made you not want to try it?

    .
    • Did you like the graphics / aesthetics?
    • Was it easy to learn?
    • Did the controls make sense / were they easy to use?
    • Was the game too easy/hard?
    • Were there any boring / slow parts?
    • Were there any places where you got stuck?
    • Where there any bugs?
    • Overall impression?
    • What one thing would you add or change?

On that last question, a lot of people have been asking for a Single Player version of the game, so I'm looking for suggestions on that:

    • Should there be armies and combat?
    • Do you prefer set campaigns with a storyline or open skirmish/sandbox mode?
    • How many AI should be included?
    • Should there be multiple buildings per tile?
    • Should buildings be upgradable?
    • Anything else?

Have you seen the game in the store before? Yes.
Did you try it out? No.

    If No:
what made you not want to try it? The Screenshots looked boring and very large download

Did you like the graphics / aesthetics? Yes
Was it easy to learn? Yes
Did the controls make sense / were they easy to use? I don't like the inverted x axis
Was the game too easy/hard? Not quite sure as I tested it by myself
Were there any boring / slow parts? The tutorial
Were there any places where you got stuck? Not really
    Where there any bugs? No
Overall impression? Hard for me to give one without single player
What one thing would you add or change? Needs single player

On that last question, a lot of people have been asking for a Single Player version of the game, so I'm looking for suggestions on that:

Should there be armies and combat? Yes
Do you prefer set campaigns with a storyline or open skirmish/sandbox mode? Both, but sandbox would seem best for a game like this
How many AI should be included? How about an easy mode with 1 or 2 and harder mode with 3 or 4?
Should there be multiple buildings per tile? Yes
    Should buildings be upgradable? yes.
Anything else? Add some screenshots of 15 seconds and 20 seconds from your teaser trailer.

I will point out that because the Ouya is very niche, and I know of nobody else who has even heard of it, yet alone buy one, only I have one, and only one controller for it.

For this reason I cannot play this game.

So I really would like to see single player added to this

I cannot see myself playing this with two people, controllers are just two expensive, I would give you my thoughts
But at the moment I can't because I only have one controller.

I thought you could play with multiple people in pass the controller mode?

I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Isn't the mode "Pass the controller" exactly what you need? Two players, one controller?

Yep, if you have just one controller, you can play with friends or against yourself using "pass the controller".

It's interesting as well / in itself to note that some people didn't even get onto the 3rd sentence in the op, which explains about "pass the controller". I wonder if by making this paragraph longer, it'll induce the same effect?

    Thanks!

Interesting you mention the screenshots. I didn't put in the shots you suggested from the trailer because technically they are just bits of concept art and not actually screenshots, but I might just put them in anyway. I think unfortunately, the game doesn't have much action going that I can really show off, and having 3 screenshots all basically showing the same thing looks a bit repetitive

I like the idea of easy/hard mode with different number of AI's. Will have to give it some thought as I think just as the game stands at the moment, more AIs might actually get in each others' way, making the game easier

I tried it with a friend, but we didn't understand a lot of it.
I am sure that after a couple of games we would get the hang of it and it may be fun.
    It doesn't look that complicated.

Maybe some kind of tutorial with some tips on what would be the ideal starting place would help.
I didn't even know what the end goal was.

Maybe it was just me though
This day is grim, it is raining. What wonderful weather for Gaming!

Did you play the latest version? That has a tutorial which although it doesn't explicitly say what a good starting place is, I try to imply where might be a good place to start. In short, the tutorial says "high numbers are good", and then says "press L1 to see the cost of different things". So you can find which resources are needed for what, and where the best place is to get those resources.

I guess I could really spell it out, and say "Early on you need to claim lots of tiles, so green and yellow are good"

I'll admit the end goal is also not terribly obvious. I've tried to make it clear at the end of the tutorial what it is, but since you have to play quite a few turns to get to the end of the tutorial, I suspect not that many people are getting that far

Thanks for the feedback though! The biggest criticism of the game previously was how hard it was to learn. I feel I've made big steps forward addressing that, but still not entirely there yet.
