    4th & Goal Football - Ryan Dale

4th and Goal Football brings the excitement of American football to the OUYA in full 1080p HD. Inspired by football classics like Tecmo Bowl, 4th and Goal football features fast paced, one or two player games. Run, pass, defend, and kick your way to the win. Choose from over 30 plays in 8 unique formations. On offense use the juke and turbo to score touchdowns. On defense sack the quarterback or go for the interception to shift momentum in your favor. 4th and Goal is 100% free and will be the only football game you need this fall.

4th and Goal Football also features support for the Xbox 360 controller.

I would love to know how this thing called American Football works. But I'm not sure I'll ever understand the rules.

Only thing that ever happens in movies is that the ball gets thrown forward towards someone near the touchdown area and they score. Or they get pummelled by the whole of the opposing team.

I also played Madden once. Got penalised for everything I did.

I like to make sure I play every game released on OUYA to its fullest extent. Can someone explain the rules of this game to me like I'm 5 years old or put up a website link that does so I can play this game.

I'm sure everyone else outside the USA would apprieciate it too.

In short you have four attempts (downs) to get the ball past the yellow line by either running or throwing the ball. If you succeed you get another four downs. The goal of course being to score a touchdown. If you fail your opponent gets the ball. On defense you want to prevent the offense from advancing the ball so you can get it back. There are no penalties in 4th & Goal Football so that should simplify things a bit.

I just got done playing this game. I love sports games. While this is a very simple game, it is so fun. It really requires you to pick the right plays, read the defense, and throw to the open receivers. I'll definitely be playing this again!

Ah, so almost like Rugby League then. Rules of that are similar except you have only 6 tackles to score or you hand the ball over. Difference being it's all or nothing and you can only pass backwards. Plus no one in Rugby wears armour cos they're tough. Lol

Thank you Ryan Dale for this game. I love football and this game is a down & dirty football game. Nothing fancy, basic controls, but lots of fun. I hope development on this game continues and others follow. I'm glad to see the Sports genre growing.

And, yes, Saracen26, our football is similar to rugby. Fair enough on the pads, i.e., armour.

Quick rules/football basics in *this* football game: (actual American football rules are a little different -- this game simplifies some things to keep it easy & fun)

    (1) The field is 50 yards in length.

    (2) At the beginning of the game you have one team kicking to the opponent team. An opposing player fields the ball and runs toward the opposite end of the field.

    (3) The team in possession of the ball, the Offense, has one mission: To score by getting to the end of the field -- this is called a touchdown (touchdowns in this game are worth 7 points). The Offense has 4 "downs" or turns/chances to (a) score a touchdown, (b) to gain 10 yards, called a First Down (marked by yellow line), OR (c) if they are close enough to the end of the field on a 4th down, but don't think they can score a touchdown the Offense can attempt to kick a field goal (the ball has to go between the two goal posts). Field goals are worth 3 points. If Offense gains 10 yards they get a new set of 4 downs (4 more chances).

    (4) Play begins when the ball is snapped to the quarterback - the quarterback can hand the ball off to a back/runner (a run play), throw to an eligible player/receiver (a pass play), or run with the ball.

    (5) If football is caught by the Defense, called an interception, possession of the football changes.

    (6) If Offense fails to score or gain 10 yards during their 4 downs, possession of the football changes.

    (7) Defense's goal is to stop Offense from scoring or making a First Down.

    (8) Game is over when time runs out. Winner is the team that has most points.

I hope that helps anyone that isn't familiar with the rules, but wants to give it a try.

One question though -- is the game crashing at the end of the first half or does the game just come to a sudden end kicking you out of the game??

jsbac, it appears as if a crashing bug somehow got through. We're working on a solution and we should have a fix available within the next few days.

So... As a British Rugby League following, Wigan Warriors Supporting fanatic... I took on-board the rules, and the "how to" plays of this game, sat down and started a game with the Scorpions.

Starting to play the game, I became even more confused with what was going on with every single tactic change on every down. But I stuck with it. 66% of the first half was spent with both me and the AI, not even making 10 yards either way. A proper deadlock.

Then towards the end, deep in my own half. I went on offence, selected a couple of tactics, threw the ball out wide, and I was off into the sunset with the ball. Surprisingly it felt rather good to have finally broken the stalemate. 7-0

I spoke too soon though. The AI caught me off guard less than a minute later, and repeated a similar tactic to myself bringing the score to 7-7... For the rest of the half, it raised its game, and was being very offensive. Kept reaching First down until it had my players behind the goal-line. But somehow I kept them at bay until they kicked and scored a 3 pointer... 7-10 at the end of the first half, and then it crashed to OS.

It's a simple game, but very well polished. Based on what I do understand about the rules. It's also very fun.

For someone who still really doesn't have a clue about what American Football is about... I can see myself returning to this to have many more games once the crash bug has been patched. It's about as close as I'll get to a Rugby League game on the OUYA, and I'm fine with that since it appears that's where American Football took it's inspiration from (with a few changes).

Some good work here Ryan. I've enjoyed what I played so far.
