    Shovelware on the Ouya?

    Since the Ouya seems to be striving to be the "Developer's Console" (which implies any app/game can be on the Ouya), does that mean that it will allow a bunch of shovelware to be available for it? If so, how will the creators of this console address this, if at all? How will it affect the reputation of the Ouya?

    Just curious, is all ^^;

    OUYA does not attempt to put any quality restraints on uploaded games. They mainly check for adherence to the guidelines (doesn't crash, supports controllers, no hateful material, passes safezone check, etc)
    The potential for shovelware is quite high, yes. But, I hope, the high quality games outweigh them / are more visible.

    Yeah, some shovelware titles will definitely be in there but they will just get buried and never used. People will have to search hard to find them so I don't see it hurting Ouya any.

    Yes, they allow shovel ware. They address it by all new games going into the sand box. They use what they call the O-RANK algorithm. It is based on how many likes a game gets and how much time people spend playing the game. It isn't based on downloads or sales. It is based on how fun people think it is. If a game doesn't meet their minimum requirements for the algorithm then it stays in the sand box. If it does meet the minimum requirements then it gets out. Every game has an O-RANK from the best game to the worst. It still plays a part in the organization of the games in the Discover menu but I don't know exactly how because the Discover menu itself is confusing shovel ware almost as confusing as Windows 8. Anyway, as long as the O-RANK works as intended it shouldn't affect the reputation of the OUYA.

    I'm surprised that there hasn't been more crap on the OUYA already. Considering how easy it is to port from Android (or simply make a game from scratch). People were predicting loads of fart noise apps and the like, that just haven't materialised

    Well, most shovelware developers use push notification ads which wouldn't work on OUYA because notifications are burried. And many apps are not ported because most small developers make money mostly from ads which model won't work on OUYA. Also many developers doesn't even know about OUYA I suspect - could be beneficial to notify them contacting them through their e-mail (if they make good games that would work with a controller).

    Shhhh... don't encourage them. We need more gems like Antichromatic and Ascent of Kings.

    Firstly I think there should be a 30 day limit to being in the sandbox before a game is purged if it does not make it out.

    With the combination of the sandbox system and the free to try system we can weed out stuff that is just garbage. If something is terrible we can still try it out before spending any money.

    No need. It will just go to the end of the list or new games at the end of the list will go in front of it. If they did that then the more games that get on the system the smaller that 30 day window will become. Also, things that make it out are just democratically chosen not to be shovel ware but there may be people in the minority that appreciate a game that doesn't make it out. Or there could be a hidden gem that does eventually make it out but found long after 30 days.
