Why Are You Here? What Makes OUYA Compelling To You?

You guys have probably read this post before, but I'm going to post it again to further explain my topic. What is your reason for being here?

"I didn't invest my time and (hopefully) money in the OUYA because its OS or its games. I couldn't care less about the hardware, software or its easy open environment. I was on the KickStarter in the first ten minutes and due to unfortunate circumstances because an animal of mine needed to be cremated. I missed out on backing. While his death may have resulted in less hair loss is to be left one's own imagination; it is besides the point.

The reason why I was interested in OUYA(and still am) is the idea behind it. Revolutionize and fix a broken system that has been placed because of years of dips***s with too much influential market control. Create a system where you can have anybody with a dream just "go for it" and give it their best shot. If it's not meant to be then fine, but if we're missing out on incredible ideas and philosophies because the tar is too thick. Well... Let's just say that it makes me want to just up and leave that spectrum of things and go back to my TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Saturn.

I honestly can't say if the customers before retail are on a high horse or not, but certainly flooding a innocent forum when you can go to the source and complain makes no sense. Regardless, I do however think that it's a great thing that OUYA's are selling out everywhere. On the other hand(and stop me if you've heard this) I've been waiting for a very long time just to throw down a hundred bucks and say "This is something I believe in." I would love to have the option to just press a donate button and transfer the funds but in this day of age, people can't just give hard-earned money out and not have something to show for it. Selfish or not, I'd like to at least fiddle around with a OUYA and hopefully be pleased.

Ultimately, If I'm not satisfied with my purchase when I finally do get it; then I'll always be able to take solace in the fact that I gave the idea itself some help."

Pretty much that. I can already play the emulators and video files on my laptop. The OUYA games are good but I won't die without them. Don't really need the OUYA. But I'm here for the peeps and to support the idea that they bring to the table. That is all.

Same....I support the idea. Also love modding/tinkering. My family couch games alot as well. We actually spent Saturday night playing bombsquad, YDKJ, towerfall, HIPS, Curve, and Quizmania(got this game needs some TLC lol) Was me, my gf, her son, mom, and brother. Good times.

I see alot of issues with the system(especially for the layman,) but honestly i love ny Ouya and have spent hours and hpours on it in the first couple weeks of ownership.

Also i love the fact that i already see the community fixing problems and figuring out how to use the hardware for whatever we want. This is exciting and i suspect the Ouya community will do great things with the Ouya. I trust independant devs and enthusiasts in the scene more than i do the Ouya devs to give me what i want.

That's also a good reason. This community's pretty tight. They are also the people that will decide OUYA's fate.

I believe in the ideal of playing new games from up and coming developers on a medium that I've always loved - a console plugged in to my TV.

That and I'm an early/wannabe developer myself - so even if I only get to make games that only I play on my own TV, it'll be worth it.

First off I was interested as a developer. I want to publish my games myself, and I've been doing that for a while but not satisfied for various reasons. One reason is there are too many restrictions on some platforms. The other was the biggest markets I could get into were mainly mobile and mobile games are just not fun for me anymore. Ultimately I want to be on consoles (and PCs) and OUYA is the ticket to the former. The controls are way better, the whole experience is better for the types of games I/we make.

Then after getting it I got interested as a user. The games are genuinely more fun than any console I've had since SNES. I find myself buying a game and playing games more often than I have in a long time. And then there are these forums where I've been welcomed and found that there are a lot of people out there like me that want these kinds of games and appreciate indies and so on. So these two factors are probably going to keep me on this ship even if it sinks, but I don't think it will!

When I first saw the Kickstarter for Ouya, I was quite surprised with how much attention people gave it and I liked the idea to have a decent game console especially made for indie games. I however did not back it because at that time I already owned every other system + a decent gaming pc. So I did not see any way why I would invest time and money in yet another console.

Times have changed the past two years though and now I have grown to love indie games more and more. For that reason I wanted to create a youtube channel where I wanted to talk about the games that I love and especially Indie games (it is now live and somehow kicking). Now I feature an indie game every day and when I looked back at Ouya at the beginning of the month, my love for it started to grow more and more. The Ouya is not yet available in my country that easily, so I decided to get one from over sea in order to, again, help the developers spotlight their games on the internet and hopefully give the Ouya a bit more attention aswell.

Now that I also have the system. Offcourse I also want to use it to play some fun old games on it, because I've heard that this lettle fella is a nice emulator

I thought "why not, it's not expensive and it can actually become something pretty cool". As you say, it's not the hardware, software or anything like that - it's more of an idea and also somewhat a statement. I'd really love to see some new people on the block.

The time really has come for games of smaller scale, made by us for us.

I bought it for it for being an open console (which has left me disappointed) but have stayed for everything else it has to offer. The potential this console has is what keeps me hopeful for what they can do in the future.

I can't wait until nvidia grid is available on Ouya... That can revolutionize gaming. A cheap, open console that can play AAA games without needing physical media or downloading/installing.

I initially bought the Ouya with the main intention of using it for XBMC. I figured at worst it was a $100 gamble that would eventually be a damn fine media server.

Well..... that's not how it worked out. In my basement projector/theater setup, and even only being 15 feet away from the router, I cannot stream over wifi worth a damn. Honestly, I also didn't really dig XBMC all that much. I had an old original Xbox modded with XBMC about 7 years ago and it rocked, so I was excited to see how it has evolved and quite honestly a little let down. But then I discovered Plex, so I'm all fine on that front. I have upteen other devices that pull Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc. I just want to drop Xbox Live and this seemed like the perfect solution, and I think eventually it will get there. I just have to hook it in with ethernet and that will take some work.

What I love about the Ouya now is after playing the games and visiting these forums, I feel I'm back to loving videogames again. It's cool to leave a message and get a response from the actual developer of a game and have them implement ideas/suggestions. Plus, the games are great for couch co-op which the big consoles have moved away. I also just recently purchased a rather beefy pc that can handle any pc game on ultra, so I have zero interest in the next generation of consoles. It's just going to be a rehash of this gen and I'm kind of tired of it. Just seeing the already amped up console war forums and fanboys makes me even less interested each day. I just wish this hate didn't spill over and end up as attacks against the Ouya, but that seems to be the case.

I think the Ouya is something you kind of have to "get" and I get it. It is a lot of work in to get it to what you want it to be, but I love that tinkering and discovering aspect of it. If you want Call of Duty 18 or Assassin's Creed 9, this was never the place to get it. It almost feels like a way more mature console than anything else out there.

Oh well, I am kind of going on and on. I just really am enjoying it and not for the reasons I initially purchased it for. I think it's something you have to spend time with and put a bit of effort in, but I just absolutely adore it now. I hope this early hate from those that don't even own it doesn't impact the release of future gems.
