I wonder if this is a glitch or just a malfunctioning fan. Either way I unplug mine every time because it always turns back on :/
I pressed the power button to let it go to sleep mode for about 30 minutes to 1 hour, upon returning to turn it on it didn't turn on when I clicked the power button. Then I realized how hot the top of the console was, when I picked it up to move it closer to the tv, because it use near the edge, I immediately dropped it because it nearly burned me! it was a 1 inch drop.
Scared poopless I grabbed my shirt next to me and started unplugging everything and put it on the windowsill to cool down. I also noticed before I unplugged it that the fan wasn't spinning and I could smell some what a burning smell. Very Very faint though but it was almost to that point of burning.
I had the clock app going when I put it into sleep mode, so that might be the reason that it was overheating like crazy with no fan action too. To imagine how hot it was play Dead Trigger for 1 hour and then touch the side of the console, then multiply that by 2 or 3. I couldn't even hold my console by its side for 2 seconds without being burned!
So after it cooled down I started up the console, luckily it still works fine.
So a big warning... Don't put it to sleep mode via power button while it's playing an app/game, it might overheat like mine!
If playing an app/game was the culprit, I'm amazed that the Clock App can do this much damage! Just imagine what Dead Trigger could do!

The power button only puts it to sleep?? I thought it turned it off.... or it seems to on mine, although I've not really checked
i don't think it's the clock app. i don't know what it is, but this happened to me too. i don't think it realizes what's going on in sleep mode, and so i don't think the fan was even on, but it just ran thermonuclear.
this is not cool, ouya! figure it out and fix it. sometimes, when you turn it off to sleep, it doesn't go off, and it turns into an electric heater!
this happened to me overnight. i didn't know until late the next day, so i say about 20 hours unaccounted for. but it was untouchably hot, and i didn't register a fan sound when i found out. it was unresponsive to waking by controller, so when i investigated, it was skin-burning hot! and it wouldn't turn on until after i cooled it off with a hair dryer on cool air setting. freaky and disappointing. i think i diminished the life of this thing by a good 10 months. this may see the warranty return yet...
the only sideloaded apps i have, which are not background runners, as far as i know, are xbmc and root explorer. otherwise stock (not rooted), with market games installed only.
This happened to me and I was able to figure out why it happened.
By unchecking the "kill processes" in the advanced menu, it allows apps to run in the background. This is great if you're trying to multi task or using an app that requires it, but the problem comes with the OUYA games themselves. Double tapping the OUYA button only puts them in the background, if you do this multiple times you'll have multiple games running in the background. While I haven't noticed any hit to performance while playing games, the one time I had an extended gaming session and just put it on standby is when it heated up like crazy. A hard reset cooled it down almost immediately.
I don't think this is OUYA's fault, it's happened on my Samsung S3 before, it's an app that gets stuck on in a paused state that heats it up. OUYA actually tries to avoid this by having the kill processes checked by default.
At least this is what happened with me, could be different issues with others.
Either way I'm never using sleep mode again. haha
My first time using it and it was a bad experience.
