Thread: 99 Waves to Die

    99 Waves to Die

99 Waves to Die is a twin stick arcade shooter, inspired by the arcade games, and 8-bit home consoles/computers, of the 1980′s.

Remember when video games used to be insanely difficult?

When you used to spend £’s in the local arcade trying to get the high score?

When having your three letter initials/acronym at the top of the table meant you were the king?

Well we do, and that is why we are creating 99 Waves to Die.

A ship, 3 lives, limited smart-bombs and scarce power-ups is all you have to try and survive the waves of enemies that rally against you.

With voxel based graphics, inspired by 80′s video game classics, a pumping chiptune soundtrack & excellent 8-bit audio fx, 99 Waves to Die will take you back to those seedy, dark, smoke filled arcades of your childhood. Re-live the 80′s heyday of the arcade, but without the 10p’s.

Can you survive to see Wave 99?

    Coming October 2013 to Ouya.

Seems really cool. I like a good twin stick shooter. How does the voxel work though? From what I can tell it's always top down so how is making them 3d any different than a 2d sprite? Curious
I'm amazing, you probably just haven't realized it yet.

There's not much difference at first glance. The camera is not quite top down, it's a above and a little behind (still tweaking this at the mo) but is centred on the player. This means the models are seen from a slightly different angle as they are further away towards the edge of the screen, but it isn't a huge effect.

The advantage with the fact we're using voxel models comes with it allowing us to do some cool animations without having to mess around with sprites etc. For example a couple of the alien models have multiple parts that rotate around creating a quite cool effect (IMO) and this would have taken a lot of pixel editing by hand to accomplish with 2d sprites, and also means those animations don't have to be fixed. With the voxel models the animations can be changed on the fly, with no need to pull in new sprites/atlases etc.. Plus there are some lighting effects we can do that would also mean a lot of work if done with sprites, but because we've got models we can just do it in realtime.

At the moment we're still tweaking the gameplay/camera stuff, but as soon as we've got an effect we like there'll be gameplay videos/screenshots up on the website.

p.s. on a side note for forum peeps, is it best to create a new thread in 'Current Games & Apps' or does a mod move this one into there now the game is released?
