There's not much difference at first glance. The camera is not quite top down, it's a above and a little behind (still tweaking this at the mo) but is centred on the player. This means the models are seen from a slightly different angle as they are further away towards the edge of the screen, but it isn't a huge effect.
The advantage with the fact we're using voxel models comes with it allowing us to do some cool animations without having to mess around with sprites etc. For example a couple of the alien models have multiple parts that rotate around creating a quite cool effect (IMO) and this would have taken a lot of pixel editing by hand to accomplish with 2d sprites, and also means those animations don't have to be fixed. With the voxel models the animations can be changed on the fly, with no need to pull in new sprites/atlases etc.. Plus there are some lighting effects we can do that would also mean a lot of work if done with sprites, but because we've got models we can just do it in realtime.
At the moment we're still tweaking the gameplay/camera stuff, but as soon as we've got an effect we like there'll be gameplay videos/screenshots up on the website.
