Thread: FolderSync

  1. #1

Auto Sync content off of OUYA

Instead of creating a new thread, I'm editing/adding onto my original one. Here's the original post:

Hey all! I had the idea to sync my ROM saved games between my PC and all Android devices with foldersync. Currently I do not own the full version, so I tried to load the lite version

Downloaded the lite version from Amazon app market and was really disappointed when it crashed upon opening. Tried multiple times to the same result.

It seems to be fine between PC<-> Phone <-> Tablet, so it has something to do with the OUYA.

Has anybody had luck with FolderSync? Or if anybody has the full version, would you mind sideloading it and seeing if it's the same result?

I'll keep this first post updated as any new info pops up.

Do you try to untick no apps background on Developer settings ?

Yeah, I have that unticked. It crashes as soon as I try to load it.

*Read OP for why I updated an old thread*

This has got to be the most frustrating experience I've had with Android. The common options to create some sort of a sync are Google Drive in offline mode, FolderSync, or DropSync, all of which DO NOT WORK on the OUYA without extra work. Google Drive doesn't work because there's no Google Infrastructure, while both FolderSync and DropSync crash upon opening.

So I had an idea. I remember reading a long time ago about a guy who used an app that "fooled" the Android OS into thinking that a network shared folder was actually mounted as an SD card. As long as he was connected to the wifi in his house, he could access all his files through any app on his tablet just as if it was stored locally. This would mean that my (for example) PS1 memory card files could be saved on my desktop computer and the OUYA/Emulators would then read/write the mem card through this networked mounted drive, essentially making 1 memory card file that is now synced across every device I have.

The problem is I don't remember the name of the app or the process it required and I can't find any information about it anywhere! I think it required the use of ADB, but I may be wrong about that. The closest thing I've come to finding in the way of apps is using a Samba client, for example AndSMB, but I'm not sure if it'll even work.

Maybe someone out there can help point me in the right direction and, if I get this working, I'll be able to share it with everyone.

Here is how I got it to work:

I first foldersync set up on my phone, then exported the settings and then transfer the settings to my Ouya. I then imported the settings on my Ouya and got it working. I did find if you just spam the save button, sometimes it works!

It took me 3 hours but I got it to work via this method. It syncs on schedule like a charm!!!

Here is a tip: Write down where the folder you want to sync on your Ouya is, because you will likely need to manually input it on your phone (type it in instead of navigate to it).

    Good Luck!

By the way I got foldersync working using v2.4.8, and I sideloaded from the APK I extracted from my phone - NOT from the amazon app store. I did not need to change any settings on my Ouya to get it working.

Thank you for the reply kaba! I'll be trying this out tonight! Not having any type of sync/cloud use is the only thing I don't like about the OUYA and if I can get this to work, it'd be AMAZING! Do you know if your results are specific to 2.4.8? I know the app has recently been updated (compared to when I last tried) and is now on 2.5.6.

**EDIT** I just installed the newest version (2.5.6) and it's no longer crashing on start, but when I try to do anything, it crashes, which is why I'm guessing you said to export the settings from the phone. so I guess my question would now be how did you export/import the settings? Is it as easy as copying a folder over? I'll be working on it more tonight.

For anyone else, i'll be writing up a guide (with credit to kaba) once I get everything working.

    Sorry for the delayed response,

It is even easier to import and export the settings from your phone! Here are the steps:

    1) Open FolderSync on your Phone
    2) Click on "Settings"
    3) Scroll all the way down to the bottom and click "Backup database"
    4) Navigate to the backup folder (which is defined above "backup database") - mine is exported to "/storage/sdcard0/Foldersync/backup"
    5) Copy that file over to you OUYA
    6) Open FolderSync on the OUYA
    7) Click Settings -> Restore Database
    8) DONE!

Hopefully this works for you! This is how I do it on my set-up. I should mention I have the "full" version of FolderSync (not the free LITE version), I am not sure if this will make a difference or not.

Be prepared to tinker with the settings, because I had to manually enter the file locations on your phone (that probably don't actually exist on your phone) I made a few errors before I had it set up properly. My best advice is just to be patient and be prepared to export the file from your phone a few times!

Good luck and let me know how it goes.
