NPD sales numbers

I'm kinda surprised no one posted this yet. As some will know NPD tracks retail hardware and software sales in the US.
According to various posts over at neogaf (e.g. Link) Ouya sold 13K-19K units at retail in June. This number doesn't include sales from ouya.tv or kickstarter backers. There probably won't be any links to real sources as NPD actually doesn't allow its customers to publish all the numbers and anyone who does is at risk if he uses his real name.

I myself expected a little bit better numbers. 20K-30K would have been my guess.

The numbers are quite bad for a console launch, but on the other hand there were already 60K units "sold" by kickstarter and some by ouya.tv and we also don't know how much supply shortages affected the result. Next month will be more interesting in my opinion.

I just put the remaining missing systems at the most likely position based on the numbers from previous month. The interest in Ouya numbers is also really low in the Neogaf thread so it may be possible that we don't get any more Ouya numbers from now on. I won't bump this thread until we get any Ouya numbers.

There has been pretty much no information for the sales of the lowest 6 systems in this chart for a long time. I placed the DS at position 9 up 'til now because Nintendo systems usually have strong sales in the last 3 month of the year, but the sales of the DS are declining fast according to various reports. Also VGChartz stopped tracking of the DS this month, so there is even less information about sales.

No numbers were leaked on Neogaf, and so only 68K sales for the WiiU are known. The main reason that there aren't any leaks from Neogaf seems to be that a lot of people, like me, spread the leaks all over the Internet and the NPD group was expected to take harsher action against leakers. So even if there are new numbers in the following month I won't post them here anymore. There haven't been any Ouya numbers for a while anyway, and I actually doubt that anyone but me is reading this thread.

Legend for the symbols etc.:

-       confirmed number
~       rumored number, but most likely true or at least near to the real result
> or <  should be clear 
X-Y     real number is somewhere between X and Y
X.      position is (nearly) certain. In this case: Xth place
X.-Y.   position is unclear but between X and Y
 .      again position is not clear but I put the systems at the most likely spot (based on previous results from NPD, VGChartz numbers and some educated guessing)

One new piece of hardware NPD started tracking this past month was Ouya. It's been a slow uptake, however. "June 2012 was the first month of retail sales for Ouya (not counting direct sales through ouya.tv) and were relatively light for a new console," Callahan added. "This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints.”

I'm fairly convinced part of the problem was "manufacturing constraints", though the other two probably play just as big a part in dampening sales.

I'd agree with Meltdown that 13k is pretty good. If they can pump out 13k units per month, then by Christmas, we're talking another 78k OUYAs out there, which is more than the total they got on kickstarter. Of course it'll fluctuate as more people hear about the OUYA but other stuff gets released. Might for example see a massive dip in November as people rush out and buy PS4/Xbox one, while there may equally be a huge rise as people buy it for Christmas.

The really interesting numbers will be July, since that will represent the first full month of pure retail sales, no hype from the launch, and hopefully no issues from low supply

Incidentally, if anyone was wondering exactly where the numbers came from, they were leaked by those with close contacts with NPD (as is the tradition on neogaf). In this case as being greater than sales of the Nintendo title "Game & Wario" which sold over 12k units (link plus sirius' link from earlier)

This sounds about right to me. I think it will cross the 100K threshold sometime late this month (as the OP pointed out, there are already 60K+ units out there from the KS and direct ouya.tv sales), which will be important for developers as it'll show that an actual market for their games is beginning to form.

I wouldn't call this bad at all because there were not so much retail units. The Ouya was sold out pretty fast on US Amazon and in other countries the sale did not even start yet due to lack of consoles. The numbers will go up once they can supply the market with enough consoles.

No good retail numbers. Sad that kickstarter pulls better numbers than retail.

Gamestick will do even worst. I can see Google Console kicking everyones ass, just for the name alone and company behind it. So right now OUYA needs to get as far ahead as possible before these new consoles come out.

What they really need to do is invest in a commercial. Quick commercial showing off there best games and family playing it. At the end say Available for only $99 at Amazon.com, Best.com, OUYA.tv and Target.com.

OUYA people seem a bit cheap for all the money they have made. They need to invest in some good advertising. Try it out.
