Problem is I can't really blame GameStop or Best Buy. How much money do you think they make off sell 1 OUYA? Maybe $10 to $15 I would think and the stores are getting a few units each from what I have been hearing. If gamestop gets 5 units and will only make $50 for the store is it really worth training thousands of employees nationwide?
I think that is where Gamestick has a leg up. With Gamestop invested in Gamestick they will be more motivated to train their employees
I had a positive experience at a Best Buy, which was apparently unique! The store had set-up an Ouya plan-o-gram on day one with six consoles in it and two extra controllers. One of two Phoenix area Best Buy stores that had a set-up like that on launch day. I can't report the condition of the local Gamestop stores because that would require going in a Gamestop.
From what I understand coming from my experience working for a company that has a product sold in big box, there is a cost of entry for a mfg to get their wares on shelves at big box retailers at Best Buy, Target, Radio Shack, Game Stop, etc. etc. Quite frankly, it is not easy..especially if you have a planogram/dedicated space with graphics and/or demo fixture. I think Ouya did the best that they could with the funds that they had available. I probably would have just focused on one retailer though and it probably would have been Best Buy to be honest, and contract hire some field reps in select markets to help support salespeople in stores for launch and beyond.
Fair enough but you don't really even have to train the employees. Even a simple memo on a piece of paper detailing what the new console is, where it's from, its price, etc. would have been better (and sufficient, in most cases) than whatever preparation Ouya had gone through. At the very least the store employees would have been aware the Ouya existed.
But even outside the retailers at independent video game stores nobody seemed to know what it was (or is, in some cases).
Yeah I went to gamestop and they had a big poster of the ouya in the front and when I asked if they had it the lady had no clue what I was talking about and they weren't even carrying it even though they had a huge poster advertising it in front. The lady thogh I was talking about the wii u at first. Then when I said"no the ouya" she looked at me like I was nuts. She may have thought I was asking her for a handjob. Lol.
Same problem I had when calling or asking about the ouya. I'm like I know you sell it but do you have any. Had to spell it out for them. "Hey hows it going, I'm looking to see if you have any OUYAs in stock. Oh whay? Ouya. Wii U? No, not Wii U. Ouya. O U Y A. Not Wii U? No. Ouya. Oh that must be new. I'll check"
Crazy. Thinking to myself like this is a game store right. Then I go down there and they also had a big poster right out front.
But truth be told I do give them too much credit. I'd say Gamestop employees are a mixed bag. A few are super knowledgeable, but most are just there for a paycheck.
I'm with you on this one! I live in NYC and every GameStop I went to either didn't know what an OUYA was or only had 1 or 2 preorders ready for pick up. I even had to spell out the word "OUYA" to one sales rep because he didn't know what the hell I was talking about. Nyc! The most populated city in the u.s. and damn near no one knows about this thing. That's beyond concerning. That's terrible!
