AW: Who's piping the HDMI thru a 5.1 receiver? Are U Getting rear audio?

As a little spin-off, how do you use the one HDMI for sound on the receiver and video on the TV? Do you pipe through the receiver first?
I have a cheap set, I have no idea if I can do that... how could I tell?

To clarify - I don't care about real 5.1 surround, I only want Pro-Logic style effects, so that my front left speaker play the same stuff as my rear left one. Funny enough, I seem to have found a problem: the receiver detects the input from Ouya as 3/4.1, while the one from a computer is detected a stupid 2.0. Therefore, the receiver applies its Pro-Logic to the computer output and makes it sound awesome, but does NOT apply it to Ouya, making it sound like crap.

Having said that - is there any way to force Ouya to output a 2.0 through hdmi? Playing around the settings in XMBC did not help at all, I assume i will have to abandon hdmi for an analog cable to get this sort of effect, will I? Thanks in advance!

For simple-smile - I pipe ouya->HDMI into receiver's input -> receiver -> HDMI through receiver's hdmi video output. You can tell whether you can do the same thing by verifying that your receiver has a HDMI video output port.

I have found [one] solution and will post it here for future generations.

So, standard (menu, or game for instance) sound output via hdmi is forced to be 3.4/1 and therefore Pro-Logic is not applicable.

    Solution:
    1) switch ouya on (sound will be detected as 3.4/1)
    2) open xbmc, define music output to be 2.0 (this will not force the receiver to pick it up)
    3) let xbmc start playing a song
    4) switch receiver to a different input
    5) swithc it back to ouya's output. receiver recognizes 2.0 as 2.0 and turns Pro-Logic on

slightly annoying, but ok. switching off sounds while scrolling the menu might help make it smoother, if you intend to play a lot of music on your ouya (like me)

Yup, these guys are talking about receivers or amps with hdmi in/outs and the hdmi goes through it before the TV. It's not the only way to get real 5.1 surround. I simply have the audio out from the TV going to the receiver that decodes surround. The audio out method puts another level of digital to analog conversion in there but to me it's still fine.

Hej guys, thanks. I don't think my dolby system can do that, but I'll go have a look.

Okay, I must admit I spoke too soon. The method doesn't work anymore, and I have no idea why.

I have my ouya hdmi plugged into my sony receiver 5.1(OTB system). With tunein radio I hear both audio clearly from the front and back speakers. I'll wait till I get home to test it out with XBMC.

No surround here either. I have the OUYA plugged to a Sony BDV-N7100W All in One BluRay Home Entertainment System. This system shows the sound to be PCM 5.1 @48KHz, but I only get stereo in either of the sound modes. I guess akbarbitcoins was right in #3
