    Game Catcher! - MegaToxic

    Game Catcher!
Version 1.2 Available Now. Be sure to update!

    Hey guys. ^^
So, this is not only my first game I'm making for the Ouya, but it's also the first game I'm making for an actual video game console, and it's also the first game I'm gonna release to some kind of audience of people. I've been making games since I was 12, and I've always wanted to be a game designer since I was 5 years old. So, here I am, and here's to hoping everyone likes my first published game. xDD

Game Catcher is an original concept, and the player must purchase a certain number of video games before the Picky Customers do, and without running out of money. There's 3 different game modes, and there's different gameplay elements in every level, like spinning shelves, terrorists, energy boosters, etc. It's a pretty random game, and not at all realistic, but it's not supposed to be. xDD

All the graphics, the music and programming were done totally by me. I'd like to eventually add multiplayer support, but I want to see peoples' reactions first before I do anything else on the game.

Here are a couple videos demonstrating the game in action:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZefwS6G5Xc (earlier prototype)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAWEeTFppz4 (current build)

(I'm a bit of a nut, so excuse my weirdness. xDD)

    Hope you guys like it.

Game Maker already have official Ouya controller support, and it does support all 4 controllers.

Anyway, I played the game, but before saying anything about it.... how old are you?

I hope you are not self-diagnosed, but actually have professional people helping you with your syndrome.

For starters, the game is too simple to be any enjoable for more than 3 seconds. You grab stuff bouncing on screen and... that's it. It's also buggy, with stuff getting stuck on walls which looks really lame. The graphics are pretty bad, with the games boxes looking really ugly, and the backgrounds also could be a lot better, and look like something that makes sense. The SFX is completely bonkers, why the fart sounds when grabbing the games? It really makes it look a unnecessarily childish, they are completely out of place here. The 80s mode also looks completely out of place (Since the main game doesn't even look modern for starters) and is extremely boring.

In the other hand, the music is good. The 80s music is *pretty* good. Was it made by yourself?

I hope you can keep improving and make better games in the future, you probably should try to design more complex gameplay mechanics.

    Alright, fair enough.

I'm not a very good sprite artist to begin with. The farting sounds was just a gag that I thought was pretty hilarious. Sure, its childish, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with being childish as long as its at the right time and place. I'm not really sure how else I'm supposed to portray the games. Should they be CDs/cartridges instead of boxes? I tried to use some variety in the game covers.

As you could tell, music IS my strongest area. I did make all of it myself, and I feel that's the highlight of the game.

The gameplay does have more variety as you go further. In the later levels there are terrorists that shoot at you, bigger store areas and other obstacles. In the options menu you can adjust the rate at which games and money spawn, the intelligence of the AI, and other various game aspects. I also made a cut scene at the end of the game that's fully animated.

When you put all that together, that's quite a lot for one person to make. This game really was just an experiment anyway, and evidently it wasn't as good of a concept as I was told by my
    friends.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to leave a critique. Im making another game soon that has a more serious, darker tone. Hopefully that will be better

The problem is that I got really bored with the game before I could get any further. I even tried to force myself playing it (Because I saw you want some feedback here), but couldn't stand it anymore.

A suggestion: put this interesting stuff (More enemies, etc) earlier in the game.

But that's just my opinion, obviously other people may have a different one. One thing is that I rarely ever care about "concepts" unless its a gameplay concept. Anything beyond gameplay really don't matter to me, I could play a horrendous looking with no sound if the gameplay is solid enough.

And I still have a question, did you make the music?

Yeah, I wrote all the music myself. Every level has its own music, and I used FL Studio

The music is good, the music in the 80s mode was *really* good.

I always find surprising how many indie games have some really good music. Making good music it's not easy. (Well, making games, in general, is anything but easy )

    xD
    Thank you. ^^
One of my objectives for this game was to make all original music and have a soundtrack that would be as epic as those from classic games like Mario/Zelda/Sonic. I feel that part of the game was a real success ^^

So, if I got rid of the farting sounds (or at least made them optional), changed the game box graphics a bit, and made the enemies appear earlier, would that improve the game?
