The only viable options are Amazon EC2 or, now Google App Engine supports PHP, so theoritecaly, you should be able to run VB on GAE, which is free until you reach certain thresholds and then you pay per unit on the threshold(s) you went over and the thresholds are rest daily, so that could save you a lot of money, especially right now since traffic isn't all that high.

I can't agree that those are the only viable options. There are many great hosting providers. And even the fastest can't deal with some badly written chat scripts.

Hmm, that could be an option. I'll have to see what can be done. Would you be able to help in the setup on Google App Engine? I was using Amazon Cloud but it was literally costing me several hundred dollars a month to run a forum this size. I don't want to spend that much.

I've gotten a dedicated server for the site. Just need to find a good time to move it.

    Sweet deal, Eddie.

I'll bet if you set up a donations page for OUYAForum, I and others would certainly donate to help pay the bills.

I wasn't thinking correclty when I made my Google App Engine recommendation. While they do have PHP support now, they don't have support for MySQL or relational databases at all. They use Big Table for their databases (which is actually much more efficient for web apps), and unfortunatly, the core of vBulletin works with relational databases (I am fairly certain that it is MySQL, but I can't remember exactly).

Another good option is Web Faction. They are a GAE-esque distributed hosting provider, but do support relational databases. They aren't free, but are relatively affordable.

Shared hosed and VPSs just aren't consistently fast enough for web apps such as forums that have high traffic. While some times they may run perfectly, others, when other sites on the same server or server cluster are hogging the resources, you will see durastic slow downs.

While you are correct in that there are many other dedicated server options our there, in my mention of "viable options", I take into account more than just speed. Up time, customer service, feature set, etc.. are just some of the factors that go into a "good" dedicated hosting experience. Since I do this stuff for a living, I have messed with a large number of choices and the ones I mentioned are just the only ones I have found to be worth the money.
