Porn on the big screen? And in HD? Maybe this will bring more people to the OUYA lmao

    Since we're already here...

Is it me or is porn on the big screen just... weird? I mean, porn to me should be more of an intimate thing so unless it's at a desk/laptop where you are alone then the only other devices it should be on are mobile/portable devices. I'm all for this app and I hope Ouya approves it with a strict Adults Only warning. It would be nice to have a console that actually accepted "A/O" rated games. They should push the boundaries and have a password locked section in which people of proper proof and age can access such content.

I don't like this if the people get word of this it could ruin the ouya sales. If this is allowed in the store I hope they have some sort of age security verification. But this could prove to interested potential buyers that the ouya isn't going to be just strictly kid friendly. If these sort of apps get approved they will have to handle it very carefully.

Not arguing with you but what about dvds. the sale of adult dvds exceed the sales of the NFL in merchandise.

Honestly, who cares? We can only benefit from this sort of content and if there is any negativeness on it, it's from ignorant minds about basic human pleasures. Just slap a "You need to be a eighteen and plus year old to view this content" verification and we're good to go.

Just like it did for the PSP - Playstation Pornable, the portable pornography device that was corrupting young children who could use it to play pornographic movies on a tiny screen?

You can't be surprised, the Ouya does run Porndroid after all.

I can't comment on my personal taste regarding screen-size or content (rather I could, but choose not to ), however as it stands now, OUYA does not have parental controls included in this frontend/store. In fact they don't have a lot of stuff, and the "we're working on it" line may fly with Kickstarter users (well actually not, a lot of them have been complaining, however I do believe Team OUYA is truly doing their best) but when it comes to retail, it will hurt sales if they don't have a friends/contacts list, parental controls and some other key features. I actually offered to help work gratis remotely, but was told that all the work needed to be done at their HQ (I don't know if that is true or just a polite way to turn me down).

When there is a parental/content control system in place, I defiantly think there should be an op-in option for those who which to view adult content. I may be a bit bias, having worked on bishoujo games in the past, but for some markets (esp. Japan), I think the inclusion of these titles would be great (sometimes such games get a commercial release on the PS2 or Xbox 360, but for the most part it doesn't happen or eroge scenes are cut). Also I think many people might only be familiar with visual novels, which I can understand are a bore to some people, however when I worked at Hobibox, we created bishoujo (which just translates into "pretty girl" but is considered a genre of games in Japan) titles that were board games, SHUMPs, RPGs, etc. In fact most of those game have been translate into English/German/Italian/French via Hobibox Italy (which isn't in business anymore, but I'm good friends with the person who owned it, so I'll ask him what rights, if any, he has for the previously released PC titles). I think some of those would make great 2 - 3$ games!

Also this sounds like a total lie/cover-up, but I don't really believe that SugarDVD is anything but web-based. I know they could easily initialize a slide-load onto Android (besides all of my devices are rooted), but I had a stock 3rd gen iPad next to me. Just to get to the bottom of this I'm going to sign up for a trial and see what really happens when I load the site (which according to them, somehow launches an application) on my iPad. I shall report back (likely with highly censored screen captures =p).

    Conclusion

Well, I'm sure it will not come as a surprise to you guys, but I could not find any standalone software in use anywhere on the SugarDVD website. I made sure to blur anything involving nudity or even possibly offensive words/terms.

First up: iPad. The company seemed to be pretty excited to "get one over" on ol' Apple by making their content available on the iPad. Of course, as it turns out, they are doing nothing but streaming an mp4 file over the web browser. This is all well and fine, but the way they boast about their product, you'd think that there weren't at least a dozen high-profile sites that offer the same thing (probably more).

After signing up for the 10 day trial (which I have already cancelled for anyone wondering ) and logging in with the Safari browser on my iPad, I get sent to their instruction page.

That's all well and nice, and from there I proceed to the actual videos. If you watched the IGN clip, you can see that it's exactly the same, simple layout.

To their credit they do have a large selection of videos, although I do not know how they rate in quality, just to prove that it is an actual mp4 stream I located one frame I could show (it seems like they use Limelight Networks for all of their streaming; while it's not the most high-profile or robust CDN network, it does provide good speed - more on that later - and perhaps more importantly for this website, offers a suite of video solution that allows scaling from 3G mobile phones to HDTVs connected to a large internet backbone).

Second: Initially I didn't have plans to do any Android tests, but I had my phone beside me and since this would be the platform the OUYA would supposedly be a candidate for (as well as claims of having already released an "Android app"), I was curious if any of it was true.

I log-in like normal, it recognizes that I'm using an Android OS and sends me to this page.

Same drill, blocks show up, and I get to select a video. Now I expect the video to start playing right away as it did on the iPad, however instead I get a pop-up. "Hmm", I think for a second, "maybe they really do have something going here", but no, while it gives me the interesting option of streaming or downloading to my device, it's nothing special.

I decide to go ahead and download it. A file from the Limelight Network servers starts to download with the name "207542_600.mp4" so I assume it's going to be a video with a bitrate of 600kbps. I happen to have a 50mbit connection at home, and so what ends up being a 432MB file only takes about 90 seconds to fully download. Here is where is gets interesting, I was able to plug in a USB cable from my phone to my laptop (although I could have just have easily physically transferred the SD card) and copy the file onto my HD. It's pretty much 90 minutes of pure pornography, so this was really the only screenshot I could take.

As the video is playing, I'm watching the stats in VLC jump around. For anyone who has encoded/transcoded video before, you know that you normally have two options, either setting the finalized size or setting a constant bitrate (things have improved in recent years where you can do some more advanced stuff, but this is just the basic). I saw the bitrate jumping around all over the place (this normally happens due to movement, actually changes in the pixels). Apparently 600kbps was just set as an average but the program was allowed some padding. Then I noticed something in a metadata I wasn't expecting. This video was encoded with Handbrake! A great piece of free software that is used by many (including myself), but offers absolutely no protection/DRM/etc. There is always a chance that some hidden data is stored in the file that can be tracked back to my account, should I decide to let loose the video on a BT site or something, but there was really nothing stopping me (aside from lack of interest and a real life) in spending the next 9 days downloading all of their titles, then cancelling my free trial on the 10th day and having a collection that never expired (of course this could easily be automated and I do not know if they have any countermeasures in place that would detect unusual behavior).

My only guess is that they acquired these videos cheaply and really make money off of the VOD service (which can only be accessed from a computer) and DVD rentals. Also I don't want to make it seem like I am endorsing piracy on any level, and before I cancelled my account I already had deleted the video I downloaded. Eddie I don't know if you want to bother getting in touch with Rebecca Bolen again, but it's clear that we have different definitions of what an application is. Even if you want to call this a web application (which would certainly be fair), I have seen nothing to suggest that I will be able to go to the OUYA Store and download a SugarDVD app like I will be able to for Twitch or XMBC. Please forgive any errors in spelling or grammar, I didn't realize that I had been up for about 30 hours and have been fading. Hopefully I can sleep in and show off my Unity 4 engine-powered OUYA title to the forum later today .

what is funny about that iPad *app* is that they COULD make it an iPad WebApp using different HTML5 technologies, such as localStorage and the Application Cache via the cache manifest.

The cache manifest allows standard websites to load themselves onto the home screen via the "Add to Home Screen" bookmark feature. The manifest file tells the iPad what files to store locally, what files/directories need network access, and if there is no network access (not on wifi, not on 3G/4G) what to fall-back on. This allows bookmarked websites to still work when offline, essentially making them Apps for all intended purposes (they even render full-screen without any of that browser chrome around it). Plus, when you open the app it attempts to check the remote cache manifest file to see if anything has changed, and if so, it instantly updates itself with any new content that needs to be stored locally. A great system (albeit a little cumbersome) for web developers to make tablet/phone apps without having to learn native coding, and it can be cross platform to some degree.

This feature kind-of works on Android to some degree, and could work on the OUYA is much the same way if implemented correctly.
