Kickstarter Update #23 - Box It. Stamp It. Ship It

    New kickstarter update from http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...e/posts/458925

Box It. Stamp It. Ship It.

    Update #23 - For backers only · Apr 19, 2013 · 37 comments

    Hey All,

Another busy week for team OUYA. We hit last week’s shipping target and are tracking to do the same this week -- by Sunday, nearly 20 percent of early backer shipments will be on the move via truck, plane, boat, etc. Below is the updated weekly shipment schedule for those keeping score.

As we do every week, we also spent a good deal of time listening ... and we heard you. We heard (clearly, I might add) that you didn’t like that we prioritized standard orders ahead of custom orders (eg., console + additional controller(s)) -- so -- we re-prioritized the queue and now console + extra controller orders will begin shipping early next week. We also heard that those of you who ordered the Limited Edition felt it was unfair that standard OUYA consoles were being delivered ahead of the Limited Edition versions -- so -- we freed up additional production resources which allowed us to fast-track Limited Edition shipments -- nearly two weeks ahead of the original timeline. And, yes, international backers -- we heard you want consoles faster too -- working on it! We continue to listen so keep the feedback coming!

    Have a great weekend,

    Julie

I was an "April" pre-order. Kind of bummed that it looks more like June before I get mine. But I work in manufacturing so I understand how things can easily be delayed.

All right, so it can be assumed that approximately 59,748 people backed at tier levels high enough to receive OUYA units of some sort (63,416 total backers minus 3,668 who backed tiers lower than $95). 20% of 59,748 is 11,949.6 or 11,949 after rounding down. According to this update, that means that "nearly" 11,949 units should have shipped by Sunday. Also according to this update (and past statements from Uhrman and OUYA), they are shipping based on backer number with standard units (i.e. no extra controllers, not the special edition, etc.) within the United States going first, at least previously. That's also not including "VIP backers" such as prominent members of the media and developers.

That's the main gist of it, correct? Unless I'm missing some substantial data, none of this matches up with the real world numbers and information we've been able to put together through sources such as isOUYAshipping.com and the backer tracker thread here. While these sources are hardly comprehensive, they cover a large enough slice for us to come to relatively sound assumptions about current shipping status and trends. Primarily that nowhere near 11,949 units have shipped. At least not if they're shipping in the order that they claim to be.

I'm backer 811 in line for a standard unit within the US, no extra controllers. I haven't heard a peep.

Let me be clear here.. I'm perfectly okay with waiting. If they ultimately could not fulfill my reward, I would be okay with it. Disappointed, yes, but okay. It is, after all, a reward. I feel no sense of entitlement and am a firm believer that Kickstarter should never, ever be treated as a store for pre-ordering. I'm also fully aware that manufacturing and shipping a product for the first time is no simple task.

That aside.. I'm not okay with dishonesty, no matter if it's from an individual, a multi-billion dollar conglomerate, or anything else in between. Maybe they are being completely honest in what they've told us. I can think of no good reason for them not to be and have no doubt they are working as hard as they can muster. Still, if that's the case, they must still be lying by omission as the information they've provide simply does not add up. Take the time to get the job done and the company off to a good start (that's why we all chose to back in the first place), but keep us in the loop. Let us know if there are problems or delays. Honesty is all I ask for. Integrity.

if you read it again you'll notice that she's saying that by Sunday they will have shipped 20% of the orders, they've not already gone nor have they been recieved by the backers they're probably stocking them up in the warehouses to be shipped off together! This of course means that sources such as 'isouyashipping' are basically worthless right now so really theres nothing really dishonest about it

Except that you get an E-mail a week before your device ships, and they've only got shipping confirmation for 2% of backers.

I was actually taking that into account, though I should have probably worded it more clearly. Based on the information we DO have currently, they would need to ship out more than all they've shipped put together several times over in order to come anywhere near fulfilling 20% of those who backed at a level high enough to receive a unit (approximately 11,949). Based on the information we currently have at our disposal, both through crowd-sourced data through the forums and isOUYAshipping as well as OUYA and Uhrman herself, those sort of number don't even come close to adding up. Again, based on the information we have. What we have currently is incomplete, at best, irrespective of all else. This is unfortunately all we have to work from currently, outside of wild speculation without any ground to stand on.

    That leaves three generalized explanations:

    1. OUYA and Uhrman have provided accurate information, yet omitted a great deal of data related to shipment progress. This seems the most likely.

    2. OUYA and Uhrman have flat-out lied to us all. This seems extremely unlikely.

    3. The data gathered by backers both here and elsewhere is extremely inaccurate. This is possible, but also unlikely.

I'm not sure why you think 1 is more likely than 2.

I'm having difficulty understanding how the chart indicating 20% shipped by...tomorrow? is not fiction. All the data seems to point to the shipments thus far being somewhere in the range of an order of magnitude lower.
