I agree that great games for Ouya are not going to be created at launch. Or at least very few. Mainly because big studios need some sort of sign that they will get a return on their investment. If Ouya unit sales show good signs of growth, you will get a good percentage of iOS and Android developers taking a chance on it. When iPhone first came out, the games you could buy were horrible. It took time for bigger and better games to be built.

What will sink Ouya is if the press keep trash talking it because it isn't the second coming of video game consoles. Both developers and buyers will get spooked. The press are right about one thing though, Ouya needs a killer exclusive game for launch. They should have used some of their backer money to get one big studio to do an exclusive game. And they should have made a really big deal about it in the press. It would be a big ask because of the time constraints but it could have been done. Even if it was just like the first episode of a game or something.

Playstation are going to be putting pressure on Ouya by changing their indie relationship to be more open and XBox will follow. I honestly think that it will still be just as hard, if not harder, for indies to use these consoles because there is an expectation by the public that if they buy a $400 console, that they deserve better than your average mobile/indie game. Look at how bad XBLIG is for XBox.

I could rant more but I'll leave it at that for now.

If we're talking about - what the ouya inc. should do now, I think the best way to make killer exclusive for console is to make another kickstarter. Think about it - look at Torment: Tides of Numenera, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity. Firt two are even on unity engine.

So - I backed OUYA and have faith my console will ship. I don't think OUYA is a scam. However I would like to point out two things I found problematic with Eddie's article:

    1. Ship date - at no time did OUYA let on that it would take a month from the start of shipping to get the units out. Even in posts during recent weeks as they were trumpeting the fact that the units were going to come out on time, they neglected to mention any of that. Only when the shipping started was it mentioned. This is, at best, misleading. Making excuses for OUYA doesn't change it. If they'd been saying all along "units will ship throughout the month of April" that would be another thing. They didn't say that.

    2. The "lag" most of the articles mentioned was controller lag. It was mentioned in multiple articles. And Julie said it was something OUYA hoped to fix by the time the retail units ship. That sounds like a bug to me.

These two nits aside, I'm very excited about OUYA's shipping and anxiously awaiting mine.

I agree that they should've mentioned that, but I already figured that it would take awhile to ship them all out and I have no problem waiting...then again, I also have another 26 consoles and 11 handhelds to keep me busy.

It's a fairly simple concept. BlackBerry is fighting the same uphill battle. You have a company who takes a gamble on a new product, and it turns out to be a huge investment and a lot of speedbumps along the way, but only the faithful will go along for the ride; the rest will run somewhere else, and then have the nerve to run back once the ship is smoothly sailing. There are going to be hiccups, and this is normal with any large undertaking. I was a KickStarter backer, and I have zero issue with not receiving my console yet. I want the company to be successful as a whole, and if that means waiting a little longer, so be it. People expect a miracle coming out of the gates, and both Ouya and BlackBerry deserve some credit for hanging their nuts out there in an economy where it is not wise to do so.

Don't start me on Blackberry, I have their Playbook and it's so abysmal (on both the OS and hardware level) that I can't believe they tried to sell it. Mine is gathering dust, no one wants to buy it. I even tried to use is as a watch but apparenly you can't turn off the screen at night unless you also disconnect the charging which made the device useless for me even for such a simple task...
