Nintendo NX is reportedly a handheld console with tv dock, less powerful than PS4

Details appear to have leaked about the upcoming Nintendo NX console, saying that it is a high-powered handheld which can plug into a TV docking station, features two detachable controllers, will use cartridges and is less powerful than current-gen hardware.

    Eurogamer
(which claims a number of sources) says that Nintendo's pitch is simple - that you can "take your games with you on the go". That's borne out by the reported design, a high-powered handheld that can be controlled either by using controllers attached to either side, or in detached form for use in local multiplayer.

The central processing will be handled in the handheld itself, with a TV docking station - into which the console can be plugged - seemingly providing only an external display and not the extra processing power that's been rumoured for some time.

As such, this doesn't seem to be quite the "hybrid" console many expected - although Eurogamer does say that the rumours of a return to cartridge-based physical games are true.

Reportedly, the console will be powered by Nvidia Tegra X1 mobile processors. In a separate article, Eurogamer's Digital Foundry says that the NX will beat the performance of last-gen's Xbox 360 and PS3, but will be less powerful than PS4.

However, a separate - and perhaps less reliable source - tells Digital Foundry that the NX could actually use the upcoming Tegra X2 processor. The X2 is essentially an unknown quantity at this point, meaning there is a chance the NX could be more powerful than the current information suggests.

Like the Wii U previously, Eurogamer has been told that Nintendo isn't chasing graphical parity, but attempting to offer something different to the current console selection.

Other rumours include the fact that the new console won't support backwards compatibility with older Nintendo games due to the change in processing hardware, and that an official unveiling could take place in September (coinciding with the Tokyo Game Show expo).

It is like they have to force-mention that it will be less powerful than PS4. It is like saying "It is coming, but it won't play Crysis!" ....

I guess Nintendoers don't care for pure muscle power. And I'm with them for this.
Most of the time I keep my OUYA offline: please consider it before inserting a phone-home/always online DRM in your game. If you still plan to do so, please declare it. You don't want pirates, I don't want to be frauded.

Completely agree, it just bugs me how people always feel like they have to make that comparison. Honestly since when did super-realistic graphics "make" the game? Graphics whores bug me, if it wasn't apparent

Pretty much what I expected - essentially a gaming tablet built into a controller with a TV base station. Though, I expected the base station to connect to the internet for the inevitable online store and serve the games to the controller units. Perhaps the "cartridges" are just funky USB Memory Sticks.
OUYA console to become doorstop when store server shuts down. But since it seems to be safe so far, we just need a place to collect new (and updated?) OUYA titles.
Have you made your game sideload-able for OUYA hardware? Put it on http://itch.io, then let me know and i'll add it to a collection we can all link to.

Yeah, 3DS carts can hold about 8gb, and those are about 5 years old. In terms of how fast tech has evolved, I imagine a cartridge is more than enough to hold even the largest of complicated games.
Heck, if store-bought PC Games came on USB Read-Only Sticks, then A) it'd solve a lot of the "please wait.. Download 67Gb" installer issues, and B ) that'd make a nice Amiibo-like shelf display!

So, I've no doubt in my mind that carts are going to be the media of choice.
I'm also not surprised about the "handheld with a dock" thing, either. Just look at what your OUYA&Forge can achieve, and then imagine it with Nintendo's decades of experience in developing with limited capabilities.

I'm not worried that this won't be powerful "enough" for Nintendo.

Third party devs will probably find 100 reasons to complain, but then... they always do.

Store bought PC games? Store bought? Must be some fancy slang

Don't know how I see this one working out for Big N. It's obvious they missed the indie train and are now trying to catch up but their biggest problem is that they are providing no content. Why are there so few Mario, Metroid, Zelda titles lately? Why are there no new Icarus, F-Zero and others? They have iconic characters that are basically sitting on the bench waiting for the coach to put them in the game. Nintendo needs to call on the companies they used to outsource their games to and get them going again (if they're still around) or find new ones who can deliver the goods. Otherwise it's going to misfire like the WiiU.

I don't think they like Kid Icarus or something. Of all the recurring Nintendo characters Pitt is the least used.

Well, Nvidia recently said they will announce the next Tegra SOC in August, then I hear that the Ninendo will announce the NX in September and it will use a Nvidia SOC in the handheld part.
Coincidence - I don't think so. I know dev kits are meant to have the X1, but watch that space. I wont be surprised if it actually uses the soon to be announced Tegra SOC
