I don't imagine SONY or MS would be to happy with them either - but that's a different matter

It's all or nothing to an extent. They have given up smartphones, barely still in tablets, so auto and this really is all that's left plus whatever niche they can find.
Very true. I read a big piece on their automotive investment and in general where they were going. They still have PC graphics cards to help fund the company though, so they're not sunk if this fails. With those stats though I highly doubt it. My only real concern is how hard they are going to push GRID, because I could care less. I know a lot of others will love/want it but it does not interest me in the slightest.

They will still have the graphics card side, that's always there. The thing in question is the SOC side, they have said a couple times in the past that they may get out of producing their own SOCs and just license their GPU designs - like ARM does. Ever since then , they have lost the Smartphone market, all but the tablet market, and now are primarily in Auto and Android game products with their SOCs. So it's precarious as far as them and their SOC business. IT's make or break really. There strategy has always been for Android gaming to take off, and for their SOCs to be synonymous with the best SOC for Android gaming, ie the same strategy they use with graphics cards. So they have really been pushing Android gaming. That took a big blow when Google who had a Tegra 4 dev box for the Nexus Player , decided to go with Intel. Then Razer announced a Qualcomm based ATV Console. Suddenly Nvidia where looking on the outs with Android Gaming as well. That's why I mentioned in a different thread they had no choice really but to launch a ATV console.

    Well... Game set and match.

Maybe I'll pick this up... I am such a casual player that I doubt it matters. Even I am considering it, and I'm such a fanboi

Their chips are power hungry so no one wants them in their tablets or phones and they have to produce new ones to keep up with competitions - newest SoCs from Snapdragon, Samsung etc. also have quite great GPU power while being much more power efficient. They can't match X1 yet in graphics power though AFAIK. And such competition is great for us, end users.

If it ever hits $100 I will look at it. If I ever do pay any more, I would rather get a PS4

NVIDIA SHIELD Set-top Powered by Tegra X1

    http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphic...nd-Impressions

    3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited
    Overall Score
    SHIELD (Tegra X1): 42,406 (+42%)
    SHIELD Tablet (Tegra K1): 29,668
    iPad Air 2 (Apple A8X): 21,541
    Graphics Score
    SHIELD (Tegra X1): 56,179 (+47%)
    SHIELD Tablet (Tegra K1): 37,983
    iPad Air 2 (Apple A8X): 31,419
    Physics Score
    SHIELD (Tegra X1): 22,823 (+15%)
    SHIELD Tablet (Tegra K1): 19,837
    iPad Air 2 (Apple A8X): 10,256
Clearly the Tegra X1 processor is not lacking in the GPU department - it bests the Tegra K1 by more than 45% in our quick testing. The 8-core CPU based on a big.LITTLE Cortex-A57/A53 is faster, but not substantially, than the previous flagship NVIDIA SoC.

This could be a gamechanger for everyone in this crowded field. They're beating most of the ATV boxes to the market and using an overpowered beast of a chip. This may be the one that actually does do something since they have the marketing and promotion prowess to make people think they need this like Apple does and Samsung used to. Don't know how it will turn out since people are hating on the microconsoles and $199 while it's not $400, it also isn't $99. If they have a strong lineup coming out the gate then it could definitely make some noise. I'll be watching. It does look like this is where they're placing all their money with the X1 besides the car stuff they're doing and all that. Might not see the overpriced controller or tablets at this point.

    Interesting move...

Impressive indeed. Also important to include Apple in there to help people understand how far behind they really are, and always have been.
