The old input delay...

Hi everybody!

As most of you know, some people have an occasional input delay across all games. Button presses only register with the game after a few moments, making precise control impossible.
Turning the OUYA on its side, a free line of sight, disabling wifi and close proximity are the usual ideas to remedy. Alas, since some people have the problem quite regularly, whereas others never experience it, there must be some cause that is not solved by these steps, but merely worked around. The firmware as well as the hardware of console or controllers could be at fault.

I friendlily received 2 new controllers by OUYA, Inc in the hope of fixing the issue - which they should, if the problem was with either the firmware or hardware of the controllers. Alas, the problem persists.

I work around the problem by using Xbox Controllers (with a wireless dongle), but I was curious to hear if there are other pieces of advice out there.

Should I get a Bluetooth dongle? Will a new OUYA console help? Should I remove the case?
The input delay is the one huge issue that prevents me from enjoying the machine.

Its possibly do to the internal antenna (a chip vs physical antenna) used for wifi and bluetooth being without better words cheap. The newer iterations of the consoles have a seperate antenna for each and most people with the new consoles do not have that problem. There is also a thread floating around about how to check the firmware version for the controller and if they are old you can send them in.

I use a wired logitech controller a lot of the time but even when I use my ouya controller I don't hit lag. I'm usually on ethernet with my ouya on its side.

You may already know, but there's an option to give priority to bluetooth over wifi. Perhaps this helps!

Thanks guys - I do give priority to wifi (although I do believe it should be off anyway, since I have ethernet plugged in), but I didn't know about the shared antenna. I have a very early unit, so that might be the issue.
I can't imagine to still have faulty controllers, because I got 2 for replacement already - I'm assuming these are with new firmware.

Did anybody try to use an external BT dongle? That would be a cheap fix, but of course it relies on the OUYA actually using the new bluetooth device.

It really depends on the tv or computer monitor used. My POS small Norcent tv has about a 100ms delay, my big Toshiba tv has about 200ms delay without Game Mode turned on. Even after turning on Game Mode it has around 100ms delay, for the most part is okay but noticeable in precision gaming. But my Toshiba computer monitor has zero latency. I can play Super Mario World with precision on the monitor, but on the other two, I can feel and see the latency. This also goes for OUYA games as well as Android games. Soul Fjord on the two tvs, I have to press the button beforehand or else it'll just pass by or say I registered it too late.
Latency/lag/input delay, whatever it is called, can be caused by other various things such as interference, controller used, or the distance between the controller and the console. But I believe it is mainly the tv used. Turn on Game Mode in your tv settings to see if it eliminates this latency.

I too have this same issue. It especially shows up when you decide to activate other Ouya Controllers. It however does not effect the PS3 controllers connected. Currently a bluetooth RSSI is up and work in progress in measuring the strength of the controllers and console.

However, if you want to try some things right away you can hard-line your Ouya as plugging in a network jack will disable one half of the functions on the wi-fi/bluetooth chip. It should give bluetooth total control over the antenna in the Ouya. Some people report tipping their Ouya worked for them. It did not for me.

If you are unable to hard-line your Ouya. Since bluetooth is on the same 2.4Ghz range that changing the wi-fi broadcast channel on your router may help with lag issues as you are moving around the microwave signal enough for the bluetooth to operate better.

Some people believed the v0.0103 retail launch released controllers were problematic and that controllers above this release worked a lot better. To check this go to MANAGE > SYSTEM > ADVANCED > Bluetooth > Use the mousepad to tap the settings icon that is on the right hand side to your Ouya Controller connected . And then with the same mouse-pad tap the Firmware version to reveal what firmware you have.

The variance of this problem could deal with the environment the Ouya is in which could indicate why some users on the forum have zero problems with their Ouya while others had non-stop problems regardless how many controllers they try. There could be a relation between how dense the background microwave radiation noise from routers within your community versus the Ouyas performance but it's all speculation.

That's about all that can be done without going down the road of insanity with soldering irons and/or dissassembly of the Ouyas case to see if performance improves while the Ouya is naked.

Well, all the appartments around me have wireless signals, and I don't think I can ask them to switch channels.
Also, I would assume plenty of people using an OUYA live in areas with lots of different transmissions (wifi, bluetooth, whatnot), so I'm a little skeptical...

But I'm willing to try it out. I'll take the OUYA someplace with little interference some time. Although I must say, the results couldn't change anything. If they still lag, I didn't gain any information, if they don't, I know for certain I'm doomed.

What's the english idiom for that situation? In German, it's "from the rain into the sauna", in Italian it's "from the pot into the pan".

Yeah, I think a similar expression in English is, "Jumping from the frying pan and into the fire."

It's definitely one of the reasons I tell anyone I recommend OUYA to for them to try to get the new black model. To make sure they have the box and controller improvements.

My Ouya is a launch day model and while most of the time it's OK, it does have it's moments where the controller will freak out. From what I hear, the new black models are much more stable and the newer controllers help too.

Same here. Most of my issues were distance related, though. Oddly, Ouya controllers work better on a fire tv than an Ouya. Though I still use ouya in my bedroom for xbmc.

I hooked my controller up to my raspberry Pi linux box running a broadcomm bluetooth adapter. And found the same results. Zero lag time, no disconnections, even after moving away from the PC approximately 18 yards. I hooked all 4 up to the linux box and the signal noise did not get any worse.

This is good news for people running Ouya everywhere and want to get a controller for their tablet for the total experience. But not so great news for us launch retail console people.
