    Google to make Android console

    http://gizmodo.com/googles-getting-i...les-1595341646

this would be a great product for the everywhere initiative to attack. this is also going to be something to compete against. i hope the v2 ouya is up to the challenge and that they aren't just tossing together a quick box of fixes for the v1 issues.

Google isn't making anything. They're licensing the platform to OEMs just as they did with Google TV.

So.. while this is pretty cool news (and something OUYA should take note of), it's not really a thing until it is. Razer could very well release the device next week or a year from now. But until they're taking pre-orders, I'm not sure I agree with the level of excitement in the article. Android TV following the same business strategy of Google TV isn't a competition killer by any means, be it OUYA, Amazon or anyone else with a similar initiative.

It was announced today that the first Android TV device will be out this fall and running on the K1 chip. I think that's a lot to worry about. Personally I like how the demo they showed included the ability to overlay the OS on your live TV. It's high time that we start seeing some OUYA 2 news.

I love the first line of the article: "forget the Ouya"

The Ouya has been declared dead and forgotten so many times it's starting to make its critics look pretty stupid.

In all seriousness, this new box has some great potential but google has been known to screw things up and outright quit in the past so I'm not too worried for Ouya right now.

Hm, do you mean this article?

I'm expecting Nvidia hardware in Razer's micro-console, as the Tegra K1 system-on-a-chip would be right at home in such a device, but solutions from Qualcomm, or even Intel, could be possible, too.
    K1 is not definitve.
Our game Black Hole - A Classic Arcade Dual-Stick Space Shooter
Available in the OUYA store now!
Killswitch - "There are 302,456 OUYAs out there, now no one will have to ask again."

Traditionally, most Google TV devices were not affordable for what they were because they put it in the hands of the OEMs. Android TV follows this same pattern.

A K1 is over kill for video playback (NanoTech's device.. the one OUYA Everywhere is going on.. is capable of 4K video on a Tegra 4), but still not enough to compete with X-Box One and PS4 visuals.

Price will be a factor here, especially with Amazon at $99 and doing everything most people need on the televisions they have. A K1 device will not be inexpensive.

However, it also puts it in the Tegra family and therefore a possible target for the current requirements of OUYA Everywhere. So such a device potentially benefits OUYA anyway.

The same person who performed the "Android L" demo at today's keynote speech also confirmed K1 for Android TV

K1 might be overkill for playback but Google is not advertising this as a video only device. There was a fair amount of attention to mobile gaming at today's event and K1 is perfect for gaming. K1 will change the landscape of mobile gaming and is probably the biggest thing since Tegra 3 I simply hope that Android Tv becomes both an OS and a launcher that can be installed onto other similar Android devices. As for OUYA, as long as we get K1, an updated controller and social features with the next console, things should be OK.

We're seeing two different events then, because games are not front and center of the Android TV initiative. They are pushing that aspect about as much as Amazon is.

Be that as it may, NVidia isn't the only partner talked about for Android TV. That means hardware fragmentation and moving the problems with mobile gaming into the living room. It's still going to be an expensive device, and it will have a hard time justifying it's existence as being an expensive video player or a less powerful but similarly priced competitor to X-Box One/PS4.

As far as OUYA getting a K1 in their next REFERENCE DEVICE. I'd be very surprised it that happens, or if it does, it will also be expensive and exist only to provide an OUYA Everywhere target profile. But I highly doubt it will exclude Tegra 4 because that profile exists on their OUYA Everywhere devices already.

In reality, K1 is also overkill for the library of games on OUYA or even Google Play for the next few years. When a majority of the developers are indies with limited budgets, it makes sense to go where the adoption is, not where the bleeding edge is.

OUYA's stated goals by Julie for this year is growth. OUYA Everywhere is instrumental to that, so even a K1 based "competitor" isn't a competitor if they're open to OUYA Everywhere partnerships or will allow OUYA Everywhere's side loadable version (whenever that sees the light of day) to be on the device.

How cares? Sure these dumbs at Google cant do anything right (one billion android users is just coincidential) and they have trashed Android Tv so even the new engine that will replace Dalvik will be a mess, but here a couple of Ouya fans and the genious at Ouya inc for sure will smile in the end. Maybe our controllers dont work but nothing can stop us now eh? OMG.
