[Personal] The OUYA success and how it didn't participate in it
I rarely switch on my OUYA anymore, and it's not because I stopped liking it. I still believe it's a fabulous little box that (apart from my controller issues I'm having with all 5 controllers I have) does things right.
Success number 1: I rarely switch on my Xbox 360, too. Somehow, the OUYA spoiled me for more of same shooters, more games for 60 euro, and the arcade selection is so limited.
Success number 2: I'm quite into indie games now. I really felt connected to the devs over the course of my time with the OUYA, and I liked the creativity behind titles like Bombball, Bombsquad or Towerfall (to name my personal highlights).
I got so into indie games, I started following a few projects, like Festival of Magic (now called Earthlock), Starbound (now in beta) or Night In The Woods (not out yet). I even advocated an OUYA version for the former two (without success, so far).
No, I got a new PC and use Steam. I'm playing Starbound, Minecraft and LYNE (nice puzzle game that would look great on the OUYA), and unfortunately, none of those have been ported to OUYA.
My point is this: The OUYA succeeded in changing my gaming habits, it alienated me from the current gaming industry and opened me up for indies. Then, it wasn't able to follow through (yet), and I quench my urges on Steam. That's a shame! I really hope more of those great indie games end up on our little consoley friend, because I'd much prefer to play them with a controller on the couch. Game library is the one big bone I have to pick with OUYA Inc., and they should approach the big hitters to bring the great games that will attract more customers that will attract more devs.
Mission accomplished, but unfortunately no medal.
