Upcoming documentary depicts development of That Dragon, Cancer

Documentarian duo David Osit & Malika Zouhali-Worrall are currently working on Thank You For Playing, a documentary about the development of Ryan and Amy Green's autobiographical game That Dragon, Cancer.

According to a blog post published this week by Ryan Green, the filmmakers contacted the Green family in June of 2013 after reading about That Dragon, Cancer on the Kill Screen Tumblr.

That Dragon, Cancer is an autobiographical adventure game that aims to help players understand Ryan and Amy Green's struggles to raise and support their son, Joel Green, who developed terminal cancer at the age of one.

Sadly, Joel passed away last month at the age of five.

"Before this project, we did not know David and Malika, but we decided it was important that people see the parts of our lives in-between the scenes of the game," writes Green. "Life happens in the middle and so does death. David and Malika were with our family the three days leading up to Joel’s passing."

Both That Dragon, Cancer and Thank You For Playing are still in production.

I would love to raise the profile of this game by streaming it, but I'm honestly not sure if I'd be able to get through it without sobbing away - it looks like an amazing game, it really really does.

My heart goes out to those amazing individuals involved - I'm glad they're still hanging on in there to get their message out.

I respect the games meaning, and I feel for the parents, but this game is not for me, I play games for enjoyment and I can't get that from a real life story about cancer.

I like the fact that there are games that are really testing the traditional game boundaries.

This is pretty much how I feel about all the 'walking simulators' being shown recently. Why should we limit our medium and lose out on some truly great experiences?

I think of this being more of an experience then a game which isn't a bad thing

This along with Thralled, Silent Enemy, Cascade and one more I'm forgetting...
These are games/experiences that should get attention and hopefully they'll get some positive attention.
These are things you just might not be able to do on the other consoles.

These are a growing trend in PC, but many feel console owners are 'too narrow minded' etc. It's great to see these titles making headway on the Ouya!

Yeah, and that's a really nice feeling!

Oh man, imagine if we could convince some group of people somewhere that our medium can tackle mature themes respectfully! That would be awesome!
