But having a reference model is definitely strengthening to any "standard". Anyone who's developed with "standards" before (looking at YOU, HTML5), knows that even very detailed documents can be open to interpretation.

And you're right.. nobody is going to complain about that. Having an officially labeled device has a warm/fuzzy/special club factor that's important to some people.
