Shame neither of the special edition OUYAs came to the UK

Does the OUYA really need replacing with an updated machine just yet? I know there are complaints about various OUYA hardware and software issues, but has the machine really been pushed (both in terms of gaming and marketing) so far? Does it really need a succecssor? Much as I'd really love to see one (in the future), I don't know if it's needed this year, or that new tech would improve OUYAs standing or reverse all the hate for it.

There has been a few games that actually push the tegra (Fields of Battle and Stellar Ghosts being the more recent ones). I think we can still make amazing things with this, and don't believe we need a T4 yet.. but at the same time, I don't care if one does come or not either. If it does, I would probably buy it just for consistency sake.

If everybody would optimize their games for Tegra, I don't think we would need a hardware refresh this year. But most aren't, and so OUYA gets accused of being "underpowered" by devs, reviewers, and potential players. So an update is "needed" due to that practical reality, even if it shouldn't be. OUYA also has to consider the specs of competing microconsoles that are coming into the market, and do what's needed to stay current and relevant. Every time something slightly more powerful is announced, even around here a couple of folks will always threaten to jump ship. That would be even easier for potential customers who haven't yet invested in OUYA at all.

More power would lure more developers and lessen the weak ass excuses.
    Needed? Probably not. Helpful? Yes.

    Plus it'll help marketing.

Perception isn't always everything but in this case it helps.

In most situations including selling products to the customers perception matter a lot. Perception is reality right or wrong.

Since we can, "hopefully" expect more black units this summer. I would say that a smart Team OUYA would aim to release OUYA 2 in time for the Holidays 2014. November would be fine.

    Hey everyone,

Just thought I would chime in again.
So at the moment I am currently** working with one of OUYA's Engineers. They seem to be very open and welcoming about the console. Which I find refreshing.

I am currently** working on a title with Unreal Engine 4.
I am planning on targeting next gen OUYA hardware. I know nothing about "next gen OUYA hardware" BUT I am finding really quickly that I can scale back Unreal 4 quite drastically. That and they are really tight lipped about the next OUYA even with close devs. So I am assuming that they are planning something really special for OUYA 2.0. I have also forwarded several features that the OUYA could use to the OUYA engineer that I am working with. They are going to review the features that I want in OUYA 2.0 if they add one specific feature then I will be making a very awesome game for the OUYA 2.0.

Also - Guys stop the hate. The OUYA has enough of it both towards the Game Devs and the developers behind the OUYA.
We are all people who just want to be creative. It may seem that we are pulling strings behind the scene BUT we really are just communicating with Team OUYA. What strings are there really to pull? Sure we can not put our game on the platform but another game will take its place.

** My mainboard is out so I am unable to collaborate with the engineer at OUYA at the moment. Let alone do anything productive other than paperwork (Game Design Document Stuff). Which I will be sharing very soon.

Can you clarify that a bit? Scaling back typically means you have to avoid certain features, etc.

But the rest of your post seems fairly positive, so is it safe to assume you didn't mean to imply some sort of drastic limitation?

No drastic limitations - I do intend for my game to be a fully featured game on OUYA - With a few bonuses maybe.

OUYA is my first platform I have set aside for my game.

I am just scaling back graphics for current hardware (Tegra 3) - Monsters, Equipment, gear, etc. are possibly going to be 2D. Think DOOM, Wolfenstien, Hexen or The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall.
If there is a Tegra K1 in the OUYA 2.0 with 4 GB of Ram or more I will be making my game fully 3D - It will cost more and It will be worth it!

I am pushing for the Tegra K1 with the OUYA Engineer I am working with ATM. To add to the already delicious Pie, Cake, whatever you want to call it. I want PBR (Physically Based Rendering) in my game running on the OUYA 2.0 It will be limited because mobile but expect some really good stuff from me

For those who do not know what PBR is - Watch the following video

And just like that, I am Psyched again. Its almost sad, but any piece of new news, any little bit of exciting information makes me optimistic for the future.

I hope OUYA gets to a point soon where they can begin trickling out tidbits of information about 2.0, and revving up the hype engine.
