    I'm Killing Thumb Drives

Hey guys, I need your help. I seem to be killing my thumb drives and I think it might have something to do with my Ouya!

So heres the situation. One of the apps I love to use on my Ouya is the VLC player. When I discovered that I could download a movie and then transfer it to my Ouya via USB I was thrilled. I no longer had to squint at my 13" laptop ahha. I could watch these movies in the comfort of my living room with my Ouya. This is where the problem arrived however. For some reason the space on my drives is disappearing as a result and I have no idea why. I'll copy a few movies to my thumb drive, plug it in my ouya, watch them, and then when I plug it back into my computer to erase or reload the files are either no longer accessible or gone completely. This has happened now with 2 different thumb drives and its driving me crazy.

could this have something to do with my mac pro or is this ouya related?

First off, VLC is unsupported due to the fact that it was a shoddy quick port by a banned member here who was a poor developer to boot. Side-load XBMC Gotham Beta Two here and install it via Filepwn(found on Discover), or another file manager of your choice. Redo all the files work by putting the movie back on the thumb drive and then run it on XBMC which is in the Make section.

I would guess that the mac is adjusting the formatting. I had a similar event happen to a sd card when using a macbook.

I would try deleting the files from the ouya using filepwn or another manager. It also might matter what file system the flash drive is. I dont know what the mac version is but you can reformat the flash drives.to regain the capacity.

another possibility is that vlc is changing the file to something the mac cant see. Its still there though...again I would try looking on the ouya.

Let us know how it turns out.

Sounds to me like its changing the formatting in the ouya and your mac can't read it like Knave kinda said. read/write changes the placement of things and Mac is like "wtf?"

I don't know if this will help anyone or if this is related to the problem above, but I use a 32gb Usb drive on my Ouya and like to play various Playstation One games, most of which take up a lot of space. When I plug the Usb drive into my PC to delete files, I notice that no storage space is freed up by doing this. What I found works is that you need to right click on the Usb drive letter (F in my case), and left click on Properties, then left click on Disk Cleanup. Seems when you "delete" files from a Usb drive they are not permanently deleted only thrown into the drive's Recycle bin. Follow the steps above to regain more file storage space. Hope this helps someone,, and sorry, I don't know anything about macs...

Deleted files aren't really deleted, they are moved to a hidden directory called ".trash" or some such title. The common shortcut for viewing hidden files is Ctrl+H, but it depends on your operating system and what file manager you use. In the terminal of most *nix systems (MacOSX, Linux, BSD) the command is "ls -h".

And yea, VLC is trash on the OUYA. Go with XMBC Gotham as per Rioting's suggestion above.

I think on a Mac, after you delete the items from the drive, go to your trash bin and delete them there too. Then the space will free up.

I do find it odd in all the years that I've used USB Thumb drives, the ONLY one I've ever had go bad was a 128 Gig Sandisk drive that I was using on my Ouya. Went to transfer some files to it one day and I noticed the entire drive was write protected. Couldn't change the contents at all. Upon doing some research, found that this particular drive will put itself into a 'read-only' state if it detects an issue with the drive, to prevent further loss of data. I was able to get all the data off, but something caused it to go wacky and the only thing I used it for was the Ouya.

My replacement drive (same brand and model) has been good so far... so hopefully it was just a fluke.
