    Hextraction by ComboMash



    Command a mercenary oil rigging crew tasked with acquiring rare resources from uncharted planets. Build offensive towers to attack hordes of aliens in an ever changing environment. Hextraction is a mix between a tower defense and real time strategy game which offers procedural map generation, finite crew members who die and stay dead, choose your own path on the planet, environmental effects such as comet strikes and randomized story elements. No matter what you choose, your goal is clear, secure the rare resources at all costs! Oh yeah, and try not to die while you're at it.

    Kickstarter Campaign Launching April 21st! (OUYA FreeTheGames is planned, but not confirmed by OUYA yet)

    I'm still working on Pole Force One, but have recently partnered with a colleague & friend to help build out my business. We've decided to work on this game first, which is smaller in scope and less risk as a launch title. I'll be posting more details about it soon, but we're going full-steam ahead with this one and should have an exciting trailer up in about a month

    Where in the hell did this come from? I swear, you and Ayrik are either super developers or magicians. The concept alone makes me excited and since you're on the development team I can already tell it's going to be a huge quality title. I don't need anymore "details" because I already know it's going to be an instant purchase.

    Thanks! I'm actually dying to get more work done on Pole Force One, but we decided the scope was too large and required a bigger team, so we're going with this game, which is still high quality but much smaller. The idea started after we completed the Global Game Jam and made this in 48 hours.

    Disclaimer This does NOT represent what this game will look like or even how it will play, it's just a very basic tower defense tech demo we made over a weekend which inspired us to build out a new concept. Hextraction is going to be aiming for "Starcraft" like visuals and quality. Will be sharing more over the coming weeks!

    Going to try and keep this thread active by posting every Saturday. There's a thread over on Reddit called Screenshot Saturday that I like to post, so I'll just go ahead and make the same post here so everyone gets the updates! Also, feedback is always welcome

    Update Notes

    Ever since this year's Global Game Jam I've been working day and night to get both my studio off the ground and this game project out in the open. The game will ultimately be a mix between a tower defense, real-time strategy and procedural driven story game, sort of like FTL.
    Most of our efforts over the past month have been on the business development side while building out the game's concept, so I'll have more fun things to share (like an alpha demo & high res assets) over the coming weeks. Plans are to launch on Kickstarter April 21st!
    I invite you to ask questions, follow our social media and poke holes in everything I post because it will help make our pitch that much better!

    Pre-Vis of level layout, this is just a mockup to get a sense for how the layout might look in-game. Not final graphics or even remotely close visually.



    High quality render of how the planet might look. The planet will be the larger scale "game board" where you select which territory you want to explore next, you move from territory to territory uncovering resources, randomized story elements and eventually make your way to the final boss.

    We've finally nailed down all of the major features that we want to offer in the game (we had a tonne of ideas, difficult to whittle them down) and are now building out a rough prototype as quickly as possible. Here's a short-list of features off the top of my head, I'm still figuring out exactly how I'm going to present it on the Kickstarter campaign, which launches April 21st, so feel free to ask questions about these snippets. It will really help me to hear your thoughts and to challenge myself to explain them.


    • Command a crew of 8 units, each with their own unique background, character and attributes
    • Player units can build, repair and deconstruct towers. They can also fight enemies but are relatively weak such that combat is not their primary focus
    • Once a crew member has died, they are gone for the rest of the game
    • Randomized story elements occur on each "tile" you choose on the map. There will be varying degrees of probabilities ranging from common battle to stumbling upon a brutal boss fight or discovering awesome ancient alien technology
    • 3 Tower Classes: Attack, Defend & Resource Extraction
    • Procedural generated maps, every game you play will be unique.
    • Environmental effects such as earthquakes, asteroid impacts and volcanic eruptions add increased levels of difficulty


    Show & Tell

    My partner Neil has been working on blocking in the procedural generated map, path finding and implementing some basic fog of war. Here he's showing off some of it. It's just placeholder blocks right now, I'm working on the basic version of the art right now.



    And here you can see an early mockup attack tower with some logic built in. The idea was I wanted them to just work based on whatever enemy they get assigned and the distance that enemy is from the tower.

    Another quick update! Got the player's pod (which you control to go around building the towers) modeled as well as a roughed out version of the main base (which transports the ships from map to map and must survive). Plus a few aliens which will be in the prorotype!
