As many of you know, I attend (about once every three months) a lock-in where some friends of mine (three brothers) hold an event in where they ask all their friends to come out and play video games all night. The last one we had (I think was back in November) was the first time I took my Ouya with me. About 4 of us played on it most of the night (I'm also the only one that used to bring his PS3 as well... major XBox crowd here.) Towerfall was the big game at the last one, in where we ended up splitting a round of Epic Deathmatch 1 to 1 (we had to finish the tie-breaker at this one.. ran out of time on the last one.) But, this time... I came a little more prepared. I brought my 4 PS3 controllers and 4 Logitech F310 (I think that's the right model number) in an effort to see if I could organize a 8 player Bombsquad game with these people. I've played once before with some friends, but I really wanted to see what everyone's impression of this would be... or if I could garner enough interest. Lot of new faces there this time, so I'm sure they'd have no idea what the Ouya is.
I took some video. (It's about 3:30 long.) I tried to gather both the game play and some of the reaction of those playing as well, so that's why I kept going back and forth. I also took a few seconds to show what was going on with the other consoles at the time as well.
Video:
Some things to note on this video:
- There were fewer people at this lock-in than the last one. We usually have about 10 - 15 more people present.
- The time I took this was about 4:00 AM. People had started to fall asleep, as you will see and the table was a lot more low key than it was previously in the night. Also, some people had already left and gone home. (Ended at 6:00 AM)
- 6 of the 8 people playing in the video had never even heard of an Ouya.
- The reason the time of video is so late, was that it was the first game I wasn't actually playing, so I could film. LOL
Outside of a Madden 25 tournament that they ran, the Ouya table was a major hit. Not only was Bombsquad a much requested game (over and over), but we had some Towerfall throw downs in there as well, and even broke out 4 player Killing Floor for a few rounds. I got a lot of questions from not only the kids there, but a few adults asking me what the box was, how much was it, and where could they get it. Overall, I felt that it was a success at this lock-in, especially since everyone was hyped up about bringing the new next-gen Xbox One this time around. That's all they talked about. That's not to say that the other consoles didn't get any play time. But, the Ouya table, hands down, had the most people around it through the course of the night and was, wihtout a doubt, the LOUDEST & MOST INTENSE table at the whole place. LOL Every time a team would score and let out a cheer of victory, we'd get looks from people across the room as if to say: "What are they doing over there?!?!"
I know I sound like a fanboy all the time, but I'm proud of this box. People can't believe what it does, for the cost, and the size. My favorite is telling them I paid $5.00 for Bombsquad. They are usually like: "WHAT!?!?!? That's all!?!?!" I was hoping that Neon Shadow would see some action as well, but they just wouldn't stop playing the 4 vs. 4 Bombsquad. I have a feeling that the next lock-in is going to see A LOT more of that. But, I think the entire point of all of this was summed up by one of the kids there, when I was packing up to leave , he said to me: "Man, you brought some really COOL games."
And THAT... is why Ouya is awesome to me; Fun and unique games.

Thanks appreciate that, Killswitch. I have a hard enough time wanting to use Facebook, let alone another form of social media. LOL
This is how you cut through the BS, just have people play the games. We also must realize that people who post comments on web pages are actually very small in number when compared to the gaming audience in general. So, the more direct exposure the better. Maybe OUYA should think about putting up displays in Target and Best Buy and let customers try the games. They definitely need some exposure in the real world not just in "cyber-space".

A lot of Targets and Best Buys are blowing them out so it's kind of hard to put that in place. But you usually BUY space, meaning Ouya might have to pay for endcaps, etc. Not sure how Target and Best Buy work in terms of that but most likely the same as a supermarket. Plus you have no one who even knows what it is, working the counters. Not a bad idea just seems like a lot more work than it would be worth.
How about a mall kiosk? Pay someone to sit there and demo it and try to get others to take a look.
