It pretty much does two things:
Basically how most people use it is for the 'main feed' which you can see. They post a status update for things that aren't really worth a whole thread Example: "just beat my score on Hyperchase" and it allows other users to comment/reply to it "cool bro, I could never get the controls to work for me." One important factor is that the author of the update has the ability to do some very basic functions like delete any comments on it (or the update itself).
The other thing it does is function as basic status. Members of AA can click on other members names, and their status shows at the top of their personal screen.
A person can also have only one status at a time (since it's a status).
