I am skeptical.

Ouya has its store going for it. It still provides the best android gaming experience yet. Shield will basically have google play plus some of these high end games. If it brings a bunch of games to android, great, but it will probably not have a big effect. Someone who wants to play those games will buy a different device.

It is not as if ouyas processor gets taxed by its games. Furthermore, I doubt the shield will sell enough to make new big game releases worthwhile. There will be a few big ports at the start and then poof, Nada. Of course, all in my opinion.

Having said that, hopefully this is good for android overall. I thought the nexus release would bring a wave of games. Has not that I can tell. Amazon's fire TV seems to have accomplished that a little.

it's possible but OUYA & Nvidia have different target audiences.
The list of games that require a k1 is still pretty sparse.
I expect the list of games that require an x1 to be equally as sparse for a while.
Seems the nvidia console is going to be mainly a grid machine.

i'd think a $200 steam machine based on an amd kabini APU would cause more issues for ouya & all these other micro consoles.

I'm calling it OUYAShield because I still believe there is some correlation with the O2. If I'm wrong, that's fine but I have a feeling there will be involvement with this.

So far they have been Chinese partners, which i believe is great to have an another entirely community to join in. I'm going to guess another "out of the blue" Chinese company will be supporting OUYA, but who knows what the future has in store for us.

Wikipad and Nuvola though they are nowhere to be seen.

I expect Tencent since Xiaomi owns a piece of them. Who knows who else in China but Julie mentioned Latin America, Brazil and India in recent interview pieces. Xiaomi is already in those countries so they may have their "in" right there.

But I was not thinking OUYA Everywhere because due to people not making their games OE ready, it's a clusterduck. I was thinking more direct.

Tencent has a market cap that is 3 times larger than Xiaomi, it is an absolute beast. They focus on acquiring companies as an investment and have a number of game companies. Their games always seem to dominate the top 10 Chinese Android games list and a lot of the chinese android game licensing deals.

It would be huge for Ouya to sign a deal with them, as it would open up the door to many Chinese devices.

Do you mean OUYA announcing the Shield as the official OUYA 2.0 reference device, even though it would be a separate channel/app on the Shield like OUYA Everywhere it would have all the games to give full backwards compatibility, and it would also be a dev kit for OUYA 2.0 games while also being the device "OUYA Everywhere 2.0" games would have to work on before going everywhere just like how it is now for the OUYA? Basically what the Shield is already offering plus it also having everything we would expect from an OUYA 2.0?

I think that OUYA got blindsided with the Shield announcement just like everyone else did. It might have OE on it, I hope it does, but if not we can always sideload the Discover store.

The only issue is that the Android TV store is competing with OE. Some games will be on both. I'm sure a number of Ouya devs are planning or are in the process of getting their games onto ATV, just as they did with the Fire TV. The more Ouya games that are ported over , the less likely OE will ever get onto ATV . For example, I'm sure you can forget about OE getting onto the Fire TV now that a number of Ouya games are already on it.
I'm sure Julie will try to get it on ATV boxes though. Should be interesting, it's a small time window of opportunity to do it though ie before enough Ouya devs port their games over

If most if not all of the user base went over, it gains more users, and maybe OUYA Inc. donates one to every dev that has already released a game on OUYA 1.0 then maybe it would be nice.

Didn't put any logical thought into it at first, just seems like the timing would be right and NVidia is/was a partner and who the hell is going to try to compete with them with their own chip. After reading this sentence back, I guess that would be logical thought wouldn't it...well didn't think real hard on it.

There's no way the Shield console could be an TwOUYA reference device. What the hell would it be a reference against?! It's the beefiest mobile SOC out there!

It would be like OUYA 1.0. Games could go out to OUYA Everywhere much later on other devices just like with our current reference device. There would also probably be a lot of games that don't use all of the SOC's beef and could work on other devices with less beef or they tone down the beef for the other devices. It could probably even go in circles with games that could run on the OUYA 1.0 getting back ported.

If developers follow the normal lack of optimization curve then no games will ever use the beef contained within the X1.

mobile is the wrong term for this thing based on it's wattage.
It'll make a good powerplant for a chromebook but your battery might catch fire from the massive discharge rate when you take a phone call. :)

I'm gonna go with Ouya 2 and Zrro in the end. I dont think I need anything the shield offers. Warchief and Obox still might be a grab but I'm thinking ZRRO and Ouya 2. Other then the
accessories Warchief comes with its just another "Android" console. Same with razer forge too. I just hope they can make that Zrro controller compatible with other devices instead of just the box it comes with.
Then again I keep forgetting about the Obox, but that one might be a little more expensive. Too many new toys to choose from. Gotta get at least one or two of these by the end of the year.

The basic point is the use of Android OS, the term "microconsole" is less important IMHO

Well, OUYA was all about being the microconsole, not being a competing android console, it is what the public (both consumer, and company) didn't really understand about it. It was about complimenting the existing, and not competing. Regardless of the fact that the hardware isn't as great or the OS isn't as shiny, wasn't the point of OUYA in the slightest, whereas it is the full front point of these new consoles that keep releasing.

Another thing is while, their Kickstarter does say one thing, OUYA was never about android games on the TV, so much as it was about Indie developers (aka "The little guys") getting their games onto a console, that also happens to be android (for ease of dev purposes). Again, other companies don't see it as such. OUYA was never meant to have a big effect because of who, on the developer-side of things, they were more-or-less targeting. These new companies are all about getting Android Phone games (more or less) on the TV. The SHIELD even has a fallback option in case they don't make money on their 'android phone games on tv' approach. The online streaming GRID service.

Despite the fact that OUYA and Nvidia are both Android consoles with "mobile hardware" and Android OS, doesn't necessarily mean they are targeting the same people. Else it would be like the GCW-Zero competing with the Pandora. GCW-Zero appealing to people who wanted an upgraded, Dingoo (open-source handheld game system) experience, and those who wanted a pocket PC that is capable of many things, that happens to also be treated as an Open-source handheld game system. Even though things do overlap, they appeal to different people, simple as that.

I've already seen articles with "NVIDIA takes aim at Xbox/PS4" and other such crap. Nearly everyone missed the point on OUYA and they're doing it again. Ignorance is bliss, as they say...

Just to clarify , The Shield is not about getting Android phone games on the TV. It runs Android TV - Not straight Android. Android TV is a TV UI with a curated store to only allow games that work with a controller. Thats why there isn't that many games on it yet. It is a directly competing environment to Ouya, lets not kid ourselves. A number of devs here have spoken about porting their games across to it. That's not to say some android phone/tablet games wont get ported to it by the addition of controller input, that's however the same case as has happened with Ouya.

The only differences between the Ouya and Shield are number of games, specs and price. Big differences in themselves for sure. But one being phone games, is not one of the differences

As good as the specs on this thing are, I'm not about to drop $200 on an android console when there is an Xbox One bundle that includes 3 months of gold and Halo: The Master Chief Collection for $349. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the Shield isn't directly competing with the Xbox One, but it's just the value difference: quality of games and developer support. Oh, and I have an OUYA, and plan to buy an OUYA 2, so no thanks. :D

Thats how I usually am. I like to be informed before I buy though. I wanted shield because the price/specs ratio, but I dont know if I'll like it.
I already love the Ouya and if Ouya 2 is anything like it and if all the ouya devs still make games for Ouya 2 I'd like/prob get i,
but am still gonna prob get it anyway.

Zrro on the other hand I wasn't feeling the box much, but I really like the controller and either way think its cool so I'm gonna
prob support them guys and do a pledge but at least wait for a lil bit. It was coming down to Zrro, Ouya 2 and Shield for me with Ouya 2 being a pretty sure buy whenever its out and shield and zrro were in the air, but now that I'm looking at everything more I'm gonna do Ouya 2 for sure and pro Zrro cause that cool controller gives it a little originality. Now of course if they made them controller drivers cross compatible with other devices then I'd prob still want a shield, but at the moment other then specs I dont think Sheild has anything to offer me unless it does come out with a ton of new games no where else then I dont really care. At least with zero I'll have a cool controller that should hopefully be able to play all kinds of games according to what they say, so I guess if anything time will have to tell. I want the Razer Forge Tv at first, but then got "Shieldstruck" and now I'm sitting pretty solid with Zrro and Ouya 2. I mean unless I was otherwise educated more I dont know what else really. Really I wanted whatever is going to have the most unique and original games. Dont care about big titles. Are which ever ones going to have the most games overall?? Hard decision really with all these android console devices or google tv or whatever there called now. But if I was educated a little more as to why not get Zrro And Ouya 2 I kind of see myself passing up on Shield and Razer, but then again Shield could still be bought for me, and if they were somehow able to get those Zrro drivers working, Zrro on Shield would be the dopest.

my thoughts now that we are at the $200+ range and a whole lot more if I can only buy wifi controllers & not use existing BT controllers is:
what would be better,
upgrade the video card in my old dual core athlon x2 system collecting dust, pop it in a smaller case & install steam or buy this?
I'm thinking my 2nd option is cheaper & will get me more of the type of games I like.

By the time the Obox comes to the west (and if it does), which is looking like next year going by their UK release date, you probably won't be interested in it anymore. The next Tegra SOC would have been announced at CES and the K1 will look like a Tegra 4 does now in comparison. Timing is critical with these things.

Nvidia will never be successful with these "consoles". Because they're selling them as boxes containing the new Tegra SoC. They don't even bother to change the name with each iteration.
A console needs continuous support for at least a couple of years to meet its public. The fact that the hardware chosen during the R&D process is already outdated when the final product is released doesn't matter at all, Nintendo proved that to the world countless times.

Don't know Victor, once you hit K1, none of that will really matter unless you are one of those people who needs to say they have the latest thing. The reason the T4 looks like it does in comparison, is the fact that it would be underpowered and it's not capable of some things that would be needed for some of the emulators and some games if those games ever show up on mobile chipsets. K1 and X1 is not that mega jump in performance that makes it to where the chip is fugazi... There may be one or two differences but at that point it shouldn't matter too much and NVidia better slow their roll if they don't want customer fatique. It's like the OUYA every year thing, that would have burned people out.

I think this Shield is a pretty big step forward. Aside from streaming, It's going to have actual games on the play store from PS3/360 that the Shield console hardware can run. The way technology is moving, could we see a Shield console in two years running PS4/X1 games? And I don't mean streaming, I mean the actual hardware. Android gaming is going to be taken pretty seriously then.
