From a business perspective, this is the right move. Less hardware support, more people with Discover equals more game sales equals more profit.
My only concern is the piracy aspect...if it maintains a lower piracy rate than GP, maybe we'll continue to get more of the non f2p/p2w crap that's so ubiquitous on Android now, which I like. If not? Ehhhh, I'll pass on the f2p crap.

I don't know about this. It could allow for Ouya games to be on more powerful and better designed hardware but I'd rather Ouya make sure a cheap and powerful Ouya 2 comes out. Also, while the software has gotten better it was always taken as a package with the hardware. It's not flawless to the level where I'd want to see it on a ton of devices. I like open standards but having the software all over will make Ouya feel less like a console.
I feel like Ouya was moving in the right direction and now this move feels sudden, desperate, and drastic. It could work out but it could also ruin the company and make it lose it's identity. I guess I'll just have to see where they go with this but for now I'm not feeling too good about it.
Well, Julie confirmed that the newer model OUYA will be coming, and with a higher chip-set (as we knew, but of course not when, or what chip).
- "To be clear, Ouya isn’t getting out of the hardware business." The company has promised relatively frequent hardware refreshes, and already upgraded the original Ouya’s controller to address early complaints. The next version of the Ouya hardware “at a minimum will have a higher performing chipset,” she said.
And supposedly will be making an official announcement this week:
- "Later this week, Uhrman plans to announce the “Ouya Everywhere” initiative..."
And at least one confirmed contract deal for the OUYA Everywhere initiative:
- "Ouya has already signed one deal, which it will announce within a couple of weeks... However, she’s keeping many of the details secret for now."

So let me get this straight. They want to put Ouya software on mobiles. So does that mean if I download Ouya to my Samsung my phone will lock up and become useless until I give it my credit card details?
Either the people at Ouya are spoon burners of the highest order or Ouya is run by this guy....

I don't think that's it. It could be one branch (and I'm 100% sure they'd not reproduce the behavior of non-optional payment information), but I do believe you should think smart TVs, steamboxes or other hardware with a gaming aspect to them.Quote:

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree that Ouya has actually found a great niche: android games MADE for console gaming that actually work on said system. My point was that a lot of people seem to disregard this and look at Ouya as some kind of attempt to sell people games made for phones on different piece of hardware, which we know is not the case (for the most part). As a result, the idea of Ouya going to a software-only model seems risky to me as it will seem even more like a 'barrier' to the so-called 'freedom' of the Play store.Quote:

There's a cynical part of me that has always wondered if 'Plan B' all along was that if Ouya fails as a piece of technology, they would then move to develop and sell the intellectual property to someone like Google or Amazon. That's the main thing that I hate about the OUYA, along with not providing custom wallpaper features or other basic things like a digital clock on the corner of the screen. There are DIY fixes to some of these things though, so it's no real biggie.
The way I see it, it's like YouTube being on almost every device out there. I assume it would be like an app or something, another marketplace alternative or *the* primary marketplace on a device. But, OUYA has a long way to go for it to be the primary 'option' or useful* alternative of anything. They shouldn't really be having these talks about OUYA 2 or bringing OUYA to other devices when their own first newborn console needs some tough love.Quote:
