So a couple of years ago I worked on a handheld battery powered PC project that turned out to be a bit of a failure; it wouldn't run for longer than 30mins.

So for a while now I've been wanting to go back and use those parts to create a handheld Ouya. I hesitate to call this guy a "portable" since its not THAT portable.

This is just my first stab at figuring out where all the components will go and all of my cables and leads are long. When I do one of these builds I usually keep everything long till i'm comfortable with where the components are. Also the screen is kind of mediocre, hopefully someone out there can get me a lead on a 7"-8" screen that's 720p or better with its own controller.

I'll update this as I continue working on it. I also post updates, build logs on my FB page and on Instagram. Both are specializationisoverrated

Next steps:
-cut all leads down
-take a second stab at a component layout and overall case

Actually hadn't seen that one, but I've loved his work over the years. He's a really inspiring maker. We just ordered a couple of Pi's to tinker with in the office, might have to try his mod.

Over the years I've done a few console mods but the problem I always come across when trying to do a handheld is the screen and the battery.

Looks great. What did you do for the screen? I have been thinking about making a setup that would have the OUYA for car rides for my kids.

That should be a simple setup like any Playstation or Xbox in car. Though I guess I shouldn't call that simple.
Never thought of that one...TVs in the headrests or a mini pull down...

Thanks, the screen is a netbook screen I got off of ebay, mine didn't have a model number on the back.

If you do search for 8.9" screen & controller on ebay it'll come up, the actual model number of the screen tends to vary (if it even still has the sticker.) I've done a few of these builds before and sometimes you end up with a screen from chimei, or LG or AUO, but they're essentially the exact same model.

The resolution is kind of low, 1024x600-ish but I set out to do this with the parts I had on hand. This was basically a "why not?" sort of thing so I didn't want to buy any new parts.

Having said that, I just sent away for a 5" screen to see if I can actually make this thing portable but it'll be a while before it shows up, and its kind of a crapshoot with things coming straight from china.

One more thing to bear in mind is that the OUYA doesn't have a headphone out and usb soundcards don't work with it. If you were going to try making one of these you have to make sure that the screen controller you choose has an audio out. Most of the ones with an HDMI in do include an audio out but just something to bear in mind. Also, not all OUYA games support a xbox360 controller so its probably best to use an actual OUYA controller for the split controller mod. I only went so far as checking on the home screen to verify that the xbox controller would work, only to find out that it doesn't work with every game.

I've been working on and off on this for the last few weeks, thought I'd share some progress pics:

Is the finished product still going to look like the previous configuration?
Screen in the middle with controller parts on both sides?

Eucrow

Basically, at least for this version.

I think I've got two of these in me; just started working on a Pi portable (the video linked above was just too tempting not to try) and the case could also be used on a OUYA with minor modification...so I might just do that as well. I'm waiting on some small screens that I bought from ebay to show up so I'm kind of in a holding pattern till then.

Haha! Thannnks :) Actually I kind of like the first one in all its brutalist splendor too. The only way I could have made it less portable would have been to cast it in a block of concrete.

I'm actually working on a WiiU gamepad like hood for a friend who wants game controls on his tablet. So there's at least another franken-prototype in my future.

I'm not a fan of small screens so can't really say much on that.
But I've put thought into it as a big screen and the problem would be the triggers

No not bigger than that.
You mentioned smaller screens, was assuming like 5-7 inches like most handhelds.
To me that's small. My tablet is a 10 but can't see getting triggers on a screen that size plus the body of the thing

Eucrow
01-23-2014, 01:27 AM
Oh okay. Yeah for the OUYA i'm aiming in the 5-7" range.

The tablet game controller/adapter/thingy (I need to find a name for these) I'm also working on is for a friend's dell venue pro. It measures roughly 8"x5" and its already getting a little large with my prototype on it. What people forget about the WiiU is that it's screen is actually pretty small. Just slightly over 6 inches.

Hmmm...now i'm intrigued. Not sure what you mean though. Want to try describing it? Or a sketch?

Killswitch

Somehow I missed this question.
If you have a 10 inch screen your triggers will be far apart unless you leave it with the half controller format.
Basically, look at the PS Vita, if you can do it like that but 10 inch screen, don't think the triggers would be too far from the buttons?
Because if you move the buttons up then you have too much weight on the low end.
Let me sketch something...

You're going smaller but might have the same issue

Eucrow
02-11-2014, 01:23 AM
By all means draw it up, but I think I get you now. Back when I made the first one in December I had toyed with the idea of continuing with the 8.9" screen and was having the same problem as you. I'm avoiding that problem with the current one I'm working on by keeping everything within the foot print of the controllers. I'll post some pics later tonight but basically the one that's on my desk right now is kind of turning into a Game Gear shape.

You're right, the split controller is the easiest way to avoid that, provided that the centerline of the controller halves lie along the centerline of the screen (or close to it.) The bigger you go the more inelegant that solution starts to get. You could try something like the Razer Edge. Its still a split controller type, but by disconnecting the controller halves from the main body altogether it reads very differently than something like my original franken portable.

Another idea I've toyed with in my head would be to undermount the controller completely under the screen. (I'm ignoring the touchpad and how you would work out the mounting right now) You'd most likely still need to split the controller so as to spread out its footprint and its probably more complicated than its worth but just spit-balling here.

When I was thinking about continuing with a larger screen, my plan was to try and weight all the "guts" by which I mean the screen controller, batteries, the OUYA itself etc, along the centerline of where my hands would be holding it and tapering off the weight as you move away from that perceived centerline.

I'll try and post sketches of these a little later.

Is 10" your target size?

Killswitch
02-11-2014, 03:52 AM
10 would be a target for me...Anything less is just too small for my hands.
Might have to be a project I don't do.

Undermount the controller? Maybe.
But your ideas on the weight work or even top load it but it can't be bottom heavy

Hmmm...I think its doable, a little complicated but doable.

While it gets more and more unwieldy as it gets bigger it becomes easier to get all the components in since you can spread them out a little more. I'm struggling to get everything to fit in the one I'm currently working on. Everything would fit fine if I had made the whole thing 5-10mm deeper. (3/16" - 3/8" +/-)

EDIT:

I was thinking about this on the subway this morning, what if the triggers stopped being triggers? By which I mean what if you reconfigured the triggers so that they act like buttons? Right now the bumpers and triggers sit on the face of the controller; what if they sat on the underside of the unit as large flat buttons?

Everything works at this point, you can also see my figuring of where the center button goes as well as relocating the touch pad.

Its starting to look a little Game Gear-ish but I'm finally at the point where I just have patch and paint to get done. And not a moment too soon since Ben Heck's started on one of these.

Got started on V2 as well, though for that one I'm going to try and keep as much of the modelling as I can on the computer.

EDIT:

I was thinking about this on the subway this morning, what if the triggers stopped being triggers? By which I mean what if you reconfigured the triggers so that they act like buttons? Right now the bumpers and triggers sit on the face of the controller; what if they sat on the underside of the unit as large flat buttons?
Might be awkward...have to test that out on my tablet

I'm waiting on filler to dry so I thought i'd post pics of V2 which is up and running.

V2 is going to be a monochrome build so I've modeled and printed the O,U,Y,A and center buttons with embossed text. I'm basing the overall shape on the napkin sketch from a couple of pages back. The plan for this one is to keep as much of the controller grip as possible in order to keep it comfortable to hold. I'll eventually make a V3 where keeping it small is more important than keeping it comfortable. I've gone and printed a fence in order to cut the existing grips against.

Can't tell what that is....what are you molding that with?

Eucrow
02-20-2014, 05:21 AM
Apoxie sculpt. Its a 2 part epoxy clay. Its basically Sculpey mixed with some sort of clay consistency epoxy compound. Dries really really hard, don't have to bake/fire it, and its very workable and tap-able after its cured. Working time is about 2.5hrs which is nice, full cure in 24hrs though it seems rock had to me after 12. I've never used it before but I bought some a long time ago and its just been sitting on my shelf. I'm not currently set up for proper molding and casting so this is going to have to do. Its actually not too bad though because it is epoxy you have to wear gloves when handling it. Makes it a little hard to spread. If I keep on using it regularly I'm going to have to dig out the clay tools to work it.

I use epoxies for work but usually metal stuff that dries quick. When I'm on a project where the goal is to save the customer money I use metal epoxy on storm doors to fill holes, repair rust spots and all that. Or wood epoxy to do repairs like mullions on a entrance door. Epoxy is a bitch to work with...

I figured that since you're 3D printing you'd just use cardboard or whatever for the whole thing. Or is the finished product going to be another form? Saw you mention metal or machining somewhere too.

Eucrow
02-21-2014, 02:51 PM
No metal, I'm not set up for it and the few places that will let you rent time on their machining equipment tend to charge more than I would like to pay per hour.

I'm mostly using cardboard though when shaping smooth curves in cardboard I find that there's a tendency for things to get thicker than they need to. If I'm making a mask or a prop of some kind I usually just roll with it but here where every mm counts each layer of cardboard adds a 1mm and you can't really feather it. I'll shape hollow curved shapes in cardboard (like the battery area on the grips) and papermache (so that it holds its shape) and then come back in with something spreadable to smooth it out; plaster or in this case epoxy clay.

So I had to take a rest on the V1 for a few days, the sanding was starting to wreak havoc on my sinuses. The last thing I did on it was a power on test on Sunday.

Haven't been sitting on my hands though. Got started on the V2 instead. Got the prints of the plate 3d model from a few pages back but whatever made me think I'd be able to replicate the curves of the controller perfectly is beyond me.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7449/12780037403_bc19616fcd.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/91531940@N06/12780037403/)

Had to go back a few steps and work back into the earlier print of the plates with chipboard. Started working on the screen, screen controller and OUYA armature and marrying that to what's left of the controller. This one's going a lot faster. I'm hoping that the V3 will be just as big (if not smaller) than the screen half of the V2. I might use the controller board from a 360 controller or even a teensy for that one since I'm not going to work in the touch pad and will lose full game compatibility anyway.

Hey! Yep I've done a bit more and will post pics this weekend but I just switched jobs and its been hard to keep up with this stuff for the last couple of weeks.

I'm going to call the 01 and the 02 done, there's still more I want to do and some new ideas I want to explore but I'm going to fold that stuff into the next one. Neither of these are portable enough for my needs (though they'd be good for a car ride, especially the 02) and I'm going to get started on the 03 soon. Kind of tired of looking at the OUYA and not playing it at all. :) This time I'm going to try and record the whole process on video.

Very nice! I like how you worked the buttons for the white one. Could you explain a bit how you did that and what material you used for them?

Eucrow
03-25-2014, 10:36 AM
The buttons on the white one were 3dprinted via Shapeways.com in WSF plastic.

First I scanned the OUYA button tops and bottoms on a regular flat bed scanner. Then in cad software (I use autocad since I have access to it from work but any vector software will do) I measured the width of the buttons and located where the mounting tabs are. Then I found an image of the OUYA logo and bought that into cad as well and traced it. Once I had those I went into Inventor and modeled the buttons. For the face buttons I embossed the text about 2mm. The WSF plastic has a gritty feel so I painted them with white primer to soften the texture some. It had the added benefit of making the text more prominent.

Eucrow

Not too bad. Even with accounting for procrastination on my part it only took about an afternoon to have the button & d-pad (even though it really wasn't necessary to model the dpad) models done. Shapeway's lead time is about 10days so I had to wait a while till I got them back to test fit and paint them but I got lucky and I got it right the first time. It usually takes me two prints to get something completely right.

Merged the 2 threads.
That white one really does look good.

The black one reminds me a little of an Atari Lynx. I loved that console, but MAN did it have shitty battery life.

Yeah. I have one of those battery packs for D batteries. It is like carrying around a flashlight with the Lynx.

I wanted one of those so bad. The battery life on this guy isn't too great, seems to test out to about 2-3hrs though I haven't played extensively with it.

Its been a while since I've come by these parts. Made a couple more of the white one for a few friends but I really, really need to get a 3d printer; it takes too long to make these by hand. Other than those though, life, illness and other commitments have put a serious crimp on my free time and I haven't modded anything at all as of late. Hoping to get back into this sometime soon. Having said that, I will be at makerfaire nyc this weekend with the prototypes from this thread in tow. As well as some other non-techy things i've made recently. If any of you are in nyc, come by and say hello!

Good to see you're alive and still building. I'm without a car this weekend otherwise I'd go check it out. Don't forget to have pictures to show the forum :D

For a guy who claims he didn't have too much experience you sure did pick it up quickly.
