I absolutely think Leopard is the sexiest OS of all, with the different flavors of Linux (SliTaz is my favorite, I think the weight of Ubuntu is very off-putting) as a close second.

Here is a screenshot from my main "laptop". :)

XanXic: Did you know that wood floor thingy is made out of one small square of texture? If you go from the middle of the second light to halfway down, and then back in to the left edge, you have the whole pattern, and then it's just repeated to the right and then mirrored down. I love it by the way, I had it on my iPod for a whole year or something.

Apples and oranges my friend. I use Windows 7 for convenience and Linux for full control. :)

I use GNU/Linux for both. :) The privacy issue for ubuntu is that online searches in the Dash are on by default but they can be easily turned off. It is less of a privacy issue than it coming with Firefox with its default settings, with no privacy add-ons, and with Google as its default search engine. That issue dwarfs the online searches in the Dash issue. With DoNotTrackMe I have blocked 54,418 sites from tracking me, when I check Collusion when I search on DuckDuckGo I see it sharing nothing but I can't say the same thing about Google, I use Self-Destructing Cookies to do just that to cookies I don't need, I use BetterPrivacy to get rid of Flash's super cookies, I use the ViewTube userscript with Greasemonkey to limit my use of Flash on Youtube, I use Clear Console Button to clean everything from the browser, I use HTTPS Everywhere to encrypt the web when I can, I use Adblock Plus to block all ads from sites I don't trust or support, and so forth. Solving the online search issue in the Dash is like flipping a light switch in comparison. It is a light switch that Windows doesn't have because it as a whole is a privacy issue :D Anyway, I did find one use for Windows. I can use it to view The Twilight Zone:

Very true! And I do agree, all in all Ubuntu is the most convenient of all Linux distributions (well... that I have come in contact with at least) but I could never figure out why it was such a power hog. I have tried many versions of Ubuntu and none of them were any faster... I've tried it on many different PC's (ranging from weak to pretty strong ones) and it was almost unbareable to use. I ended up using Lubuntu for my school work a couple of years ago, because that gave acceptable performance.

So, my question here is; have you guys done heavy tweaking to make Ubuntu be snappy and responsive (something I never really did bother with before switching to SliTaz) or do you have overclocked i7 CPU's with extra everything to compensate?

timmytot666

No. I bought this (http://www.cnet.com/laptops/asus-x83vb-x1/4505-3121_7-33309982.html) computer when it was new. I watched tutorial videos around the end of last year to get the best performance out of Vista. I got it running much better. I bought Windows 7 with the intentions of dual booting with ubuntu which I was new to. My reasoning was that I had to get Windows 7 because there was no way I would ever use Windows 8 and I thought I would need it because I would use it more than ubuntu. I kept getting frustrated with not partitioning the dual boot exactly how I wanted it. So, I just put on ubuntu 12.10. I thought I would just use ubuntu 12.10 for awhile and get back to figuring out how to partition Windows 7 later when I was less frustrated. I quickly discovered that I didn't need Windows 7 and preferred ubuntu 12.10. ubuntu 12.10 is sloooow yet it still seemed faster to me than Windows did and I didn't have to do all the annoying maintenance stuff to keep it that way(defragmenting, virus scans, reboot after every update, and so forth and so on.) It just performed like a fresh install, I would suspend it when not using it, and I would only reboot it after major updates. It just ran and ran. Then ubuntu 13.04 was released and now it is really fast. It felt like a brand new computer and still does. I think the only things that I would consider tweaking it is turning off the online searches in the Dash when using Unity and using Gnome Shell seems faster.

I don't like upgrading computers often. This is my third computer. My first one is a desktop my brother built for me. It is in my shed infected with Windows XP and viruses. When I get more space, I will bring it back in and back to life with GNU/Linux. My second computer was my brother's old laptop. It physically broke. The computer I am on now is my third one and I don't see replacing it any time soon. I use them until they break. I rather do it that way and get surprised by how much computers advance than advancing incrementally every year or so.

Anyway, I assume the reason it is heavier than other distros is because they aren't just trying to appeal to geeky types but everyone and Unity is a work in progress. From my understanding, the point of Unity is to converge everything into one device kind of like what Microsoft is trying to do with putting a tablet OS on desktops with Windows 8. But the idea behind Unity is to make it more intuitive and for it to change with what device it is on. Depending on what device it is on determines how it looks but it functions a similar way on all devices. They are trying to tweak it to get good performance so the same OS would work as a phone, a tablet, a desktop, a media center, a video game console, and so forth. So, it will get faster because it has to so it can work on a phone or on anything else. Here are some relevant videos:

This is someone that got Mir running on it. It is what is suppose to be used in Unity Next. It seems pretty fast. I think the part of the video where all the videos are on all at once while multitasking other things is pretty impressive:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGcFkJtCJgQ

This is Mark Shuttleworth explaining the idea about converging everything with Unity and it changing based on the devices it is running in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h384z7Ph0gU

This is someone using the desktop touch controls. I'm not into touch controls but they seem more intuitive than Windows 8's touch controls because there isn't Metro and the desktop separated into almost two different OS's with gestures mixed with mouse controls. It works just on the desktop and when using a mouse it feels like a normal desktop. I didn't even know mine would do this if I had a touch screen before seeing this video because it works so well with a mouse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp8_jetKEu8

This is a video more on topic. It is eye candy of pure awesomeness that convinces me that the Star Trek Enterprise runs on GNU/Linux. There is a 3 video limit so this is just a link.

Right now I'm using this wallpaper that I'm making, it's not finished yet... I think. I'm trying to keep it simple. If I add too much details it'll take away the simple from it. If I do decide to fix it up some more I'll probably boost up the resolution and work on his eyes, for now.

By the way, It's supposed to be Magnus Jones' face.

Pretty similar to the way I keep my Xfce :)

Two things I miss about KDE, which I don't install just not to bring half of that environment as a dependency: K3B and Konquest. Damn if I loved that game! :D

I like to find random images from the Hubble telescope, pop them with Gimp or Snapseed, and then add them to everything.

Like this:http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/03/5894629f43af4efa7d1241a5efced659.jpg

Edit: And for you out there who know your way around older macs - this is actually not Leopard but Tiger with a bit of tweaking. :)

There should be, but you could use the [IMG]link-to-your-pic-hosted-somewhere[/PIC] BB code instead. I usually upload my pics on postimage (http://postimage.org/).

Not sure if this will work, I always have trouble with uploading images to forums. I don't see any attach file option either like the one in the picture that Starfighter posted.

True, I don't see the attachment button either. For the pic you've posted, try to use another service and not Dropbox, since it can give you a link which leads to a 403 - Forbidden page, as in this case. Try PostImage ("http://postimage.org/) instead :)
