By "list of currently running apps", I assume "force kill an app" is part of it.

I've tried several launchers on OUYA, looking for a launcher friendly to TV, Remote, and OUYA, I have to say, Baxy Launcher is the best launcher I've ever found on OUYA. Good job Fankkie~

I agree, the OUYA could use a clock.
I couldn't decide between Analog or Digital clock. But Analog was easier to implement. (read: I am lazy)

Yes, Brony Videos.
I made that app to make it easier to view videos from Dailymotion on Google TV devices.
But it also works on OUYA :fat:

The application has been updated.

There is a new menu you can start using the menu-button.
Useful when using controllers that do not every button an OUYA controller has.

There is a new Running Apps screen.
In the first screen (the one with the Clock) press the Menu-button and select 'Running Apps'.
Note: you cannot kill apps. This must be a bug in OUYA.

Running NOVA Prime but I'm open to change. Do you have a menu option to change home launcher? I have had issues with OUYA controller connecting when booting straight in to Nova. I currently use autopilot to launch Nova after boot, then use NOVA settings to make it default

With so many games to install/try on the OUYA, the launcher that I end up using will support some kind of favorites/starred feature. Are you planning such a feature? I'm thinking that you should be able to favorite a game or app and they'd appear under a "Favorites" section that is the first/top option on the main screen for fastest possible access.

Another feature that would apply to all screens is for ordering (alphabetical, newest/oldest first, "o rank", custom, etc).

It's great! I didn't expect to receive an update so soon, now I can use my remote like a charm. Thanks, Fankkie~

One issue, in the application list, there is only "Filter" in the menu, why there is no "App Info"? This is really strange.

And feature request:

1. Add a Favorite category, and it means a new menu item "add to/remove from Favorite" need to be added onto selected app. Or, there is nothing much in the home screen yet, we can reuse this space, by adding maybe 4/or more most used app, can be access directly from home screen.
2. There are already too many categories, I think OUYA app category can be removed, merge it into "Apps", or "OUYA". Even OUYA launcher it self doesn't have a separate OUYA app list.

------
If drop down shadow (or outline) under app title can be added, that will be cool~ Now on some wallpaper, the black title is really hard to read.

Merged your posts. Use the edit button next time. It makes things cleaner.

Has your download link been updated?

And something I'd like to see is fast access to advanced settings like in nova where you press menu button and then it is one of the options.

Also my clock is way off and the discover button doesn't open.

There is no App Info, because I was not sure how to implement it in the Menu.
The App Info is dependant on which app is focused, when you open the Menu, the menu has focus.
So we would not know which game was selected. But now I know how to implement it, just save what app was focussed before opening the Menu.
It will be added in the next version.

Favorites will also be added. But for now only as a filter.
Where the apps will go on the homescreen is up to the Designer.

I do not think we have to many categories. I think having more categories only make this Launcher better than the Stock Launcher.

I agree with this! It's one of my only complaints about the OUYA launcher. If I am looking for just apps that are ouya native, i want to be able to find that, as well as games that are just ouya native.

I still think the ui need like a more console like feel but im pretty happy that your making this available for all of us that are not happy with the way ouya looks

Your OUYA does not have to be rooted to install this launcher.
But to start discover you will need to use the stock launcher, and to turn it off you will need to press the power-button.

Hey Manaurys, I know very well what you mean with the console feel.

Right now, all our efforts goes into making a console launcher for the TV that has all the important features into it that you can't miss like for example speed but also stability.

The project is still young so any comments, feature requests are always welcome here or on Github.

But of course we don't want to stick a race engine in a soap car. So we are also quietly working on a more different design, a more console approach. Here is a sneak peak of what could be in store in feature builds. To be warned, this is a photoshop mockup, we still have a long way to go before this level of design is possible. The biggest problem at the moment is lack of skill at my side in android/java eco system. So I'm not sure all these things could be implemented.

Problems ahead with this design
- one of the problems we have is the tiles OUYA uses.
OUYA uses one type of tiles with proportion 16x9, android use mostly cubic tiles but with a lower quality, The tiles in my example are custom made, so in order to achieve this kind tile system as presented, every game will need it's own set of tiles on top of what is available by the app itself. Just like custom artwork in xbmc. So i'm currently looking/studying how we could implement this without to much cost.

:encouragement:Not too shabby. I like the photoshop mockups a lot. Never did like the stock OUYA launcher. The color and design is hideous. Looking forward to seeing where this UI project goes.

I'm currently using Smart Launcher Pro with Wave Live Wallpaper. It auto categorizes apps into 6 app drawers running down the side. Communication, Internet, Games, Media, Utility, and Settings. Controller Left and Right bumpers move through the app drawers, stick moves around, O button selects. Flawless Victory.

If this project gets to a more console feel, I just might switch. My OUYA showcases all of the Tegra 3 games with native controller support to show what the little guy can do. But we not only have to perform well, we have to look good too...in order to slap a few haters back under their troll bridge.

Don't forget the designer xD ! Without him, the launcher would still look like this:

I live in the Netherlands, and i'm not willing to move to USA for my job.
Well, Actually, I kinda wish I did work for OUYA, because than I could change one line of code in their Stock Launcher that is bugging me since I started making this Launcher.
We need Root to start Discover, but with one line of code in the Stock Launcher, we could start Discover without needing Root.

It is perfectly safe to use this launcher, even when the ouya updates.
The stock launcher is not deleted. It still exists on your OUYA.

The stock launcher checks for ouya updates everytime you power-on your OUYA. Even when when you use BAXY.
If you want to play it safe:
Open the discover store once a day to make sure you don't miss any OUYA Updates.
Discover is a part of the Stock launcher.
You can start Discover directly using BAXY if you have rooted your OUYA,
Or you could start the Stock Launcher (its under 'Android Apps'), and than open Discover.

It is not required to Root your OUYA if you want to use this Launcher.

But a Rooted OUYA would enable you to start Discover directly, and power off the device using BAXY.

Here is a good guide for Rooting your OUYA:

OR
http://www.ouyaforums.com/forum/14-ouya-hacking/624-4-minute-root-ouya.html

Note:
This guide works only when you have already installed the Android SDK, and installed the ADB Drivers for your OUYA.

Here is a guide about installing the OUYA ADB Driver:

Most of my friends have never heard of it before and when booting it up im sure they will be asking to play my BAXY lol. Not that I doubt any one here doesnt appreciate your guy's amazing work, but we all will know what UI were graciously able to run

Hopefully OUYA team fix there code so we don't have to root OUYA to use discover with this launcher.
OUYA says they are open yet they block out every little thing. Even stuff that does not matter.

You can use Discover, just Launch the Stock Launcher.
Its under 'Android Apps', named 'OUYA Launcher'.

Thanks so much for making this. I second the suggestions to replace "Baxy" with "Ouya" on the home screen, and adding a Favorites folder at the top of the home screen list.

I added a nice Alan Wake 1080p picture as a background and it looks pretty good. I'm not going back to the original Ouya launcher unless I have to. ;)

Very excited to try this out! Will be sure to give it a spin once I get home. One quick thing that may just be a personal preferance but instead of saying BAXY on the top could it say OUYA? Most of my friends have never heard of it before and when booting it up im sure they will be asking to play my BAXY lol. Not that I doubt any one here doesnt appreciate your guy's amazing work, but we all will know what UI were graciously able to run
Keep up the great work!

Will add it to the list of feature-requests:
- OUYA logo instead of BAXY logo (will be able to change via settings)

Just finished the request for the OUYA logo, Frank will add the option to select the OUYA logo in the next release.

- Also I'm working on the documentation for now, a good installation guide, a rooting guide etc..
- After that I will do some serious testing on the UI, making small cosmetic tweaks with the current version.

Just wanted to thank all of you for your support, really we enjoyed all of your posts!!

I checked out the launcher tonight and it does look pretty sharp. However I think the OUYA Games and OUYA Apps should be more like Games and Apps. The reason why is I think all the games should be kept together regardless of where they came from. As it is, I have to go to Android Apps to find my really fun THD games like Beach Buggy Blitz, Burn Zombie Burn, Dead Trigger, Conduit HD, Riptide GP...and my RPGs like Spectral Souls and Symphony of Eternity.

Keeping your side loaded apps outside in the rain while your OUYA points and laughs at the window just seems wrong.

Future implementation. Id like to see adding access to the system wallpapers and live wallpapers. I absolutely love Wave live wallpaper to look more like a modern day gaming system. It sort of resembles the wave background of the Playstation, but on default can change random colors. It also has a ton of settings for the wave amplitude and shape.

I kinda agree, but that is not technical possible.
There is a reason why it is divided this way. We can find out with an Intent-Filter which packages are Apps and what packages are Games.
(tv.ouya.intent.category.GAME vs tv.ouya.intent.category.APP) see: https://devs.ouya.tv/developers/docs/setup
There is no such intent-filter for normal android apps. That is why Android apps are just Android Apps and Android Games in one bucket.
Btw, the stock launcher puts those things at MAKE. That is even worse.

I'll add to the feature-request list:
- Live wallpaper support

Problems ahead with this design
- one of the problems we have is the tiles OUYA uses.
OUYA uses one type of tiles with proportion 16x9, android use mostly cubic tiles but with a lower quality, The tiles in my example are custom made, so in order to achieve this kind tile system as presented, every game will need it's own set of tiles on top of what is available by the app itself. Just like custom artwork in xbmc. So i'm currently looking/studying how we could implement this without to much cost.

So a bunch of things lol, I'm a UI Designer too. I don't think that's nessecary because you can pull off that style and still maintain ouya's look. I think it'd be easier on you and still maintain ouya's widescreen look while being a bit more updated. And you can make it like a grid and use boxes how you want you know this is just an example. To do what you want you'd need a metadata server of ouya games with multiplepictures for the all the sizes and it'd constantly need to update for all the new games that keep coming out. It'd be a lot of work.

http://puu.sh/3FI21.png

I know you said what you guys showed is what you ''want'' to do but I made this to show a few suggestions and show how you can make a more modern look and keep the default app icons without having to make a whole metadata site or something that requires constant updating for all of ouya's games.

Stuff in this:
-The in the list along the top the three things with [ next to it are "stapled/pinned" apps, meaning they are on any page and are just their in name to quickly highlight and launch.
-The ones with [ along the side are folders or ways of sorting your games/apps/etc so you can put stuff in folders and it'll be mentioned along the side there
-RSS Feed, because why not? You can use it for whatever, if you can find a source of good info for OUYA it could be the ouya ticker of new stuff. Or allow people to set their own source. Just a suggestion

A few other stuff here and there. I was just making this as a suggestion. Feel free to use what you want or nothing at all. I was just wanting to make a picture example of some stuff you know :D If you got any questions feel free to ask.

Sorry the tiles are low res I couldn't find a good screenshot

Hey XanXic,

Thank you for taking interest and helping out our project

FYI I just shared an album I kept privately shared for a while, it shows and explains more the ideas around the design.
But also the implications this has.

https://plus.google.com/photos/108354583103011120629/albums/5899686020623725713?authkey=CI2-veGvhsz4pAE

The things I like in your design / and some random thoughts

- the pagination you sticked to the grid outlines, makes a lot more sense, I will implement that, but iim now more in favour now of a Page 1/5 in case you do have a lot of games

- a search option, that's I think a hard one to implement code wise, but a nice feature to have, I think we should implement it

- the grid system, I think it's something like this we need, for the OUYA games it's perfect, i have a similar mockup with 3 tile sizes but this is better, my suggestion to Frank was to implement this grid system (for OUYA tiles) and center the android apps (cubic ones) with the option to provide a user OUYA tile on a custom path. For example, I install an android game called samurai, and if we find a png tile in ../OUYA_TILES/samuria.png we would load it. Creating this tiles could be a group effort instead and we could collect all these tiles and put them in an addition package.

I will also take note of all your other suggestions :)

Thank you Xanxic for these great suggestions!

Hey XanXic,

Thank you for taking interest and helping out our project
AND MORE STUFF

Thanks, I was worried you might be one of those guys that takes design suggestions as criticisms :3

I was trying to stay close to what you had pictured because I thought that was more of a final design than a concept. All these images in this album show me you're interested in all kinds of ways. I have a few things I like to do that I didn't do because I figured it wouldn't fit into your design, so maybe i'll give it some more thought :D One thing I like to do is hide the button functions in a way that isn't odd. I don't like it when there's a list of buttons.

http://puu.sh/3FKzu.jpg
http://puu.sh/3FKAp.jpg
Spacing and stuff is bad, but this is an example of what I mean. More like an example of what the button does instead of a list of button functions down the side or along the bottom. And like an arrow point left next to an A <-A

I only listed a search function because you did on all your concepts. :P Between all the favorites and folder functions I think a search function would be a bit redundant with all the sorting and organizing you'd have. If it's easy throw it in there but if it's difficult I wouldn't bother with it.

I'm trying to think of a workaround for the square stuff. I know there's an easier way to display it and still keep the grid looking even. :/ I feel an idea in me it's just not there yet lol. I noticed that a 1x1 square would fill the 16x9's a wee bit over halfway. So I feel like there's something that could be inserted into that space to make it look wide and one app. I'll have to sleep on it. I'm not sure about using images as a group, you'd need a website or database to distrubute that stuff and it'd be a lot of work for someone. And you'd need to have to keep it up to date and there's a LOT of apps out there lol. An option to do that manually would be useful but I'm not sure you could cover everything honestly.

You could try fitting it in the box centered. Like just expand the image till it hits the sides. It might be enough that it doesn't look too weird. I can't think the term for that ''fit to window, or fill image'' something like that

I also have a few logo ideas if you want.

@Frank, is there a way you can mess with downloads? With or without Root access? Something like a more advanced feedback on how fast a download/eta is or something would be nice. And of course like everyone's been begging ouya a queue?

Hehe, no damages done here, this is a community effort.

the button functions, I have been toying around with ideas in my head, at this moment I simply implemented to OUYA style, I'll make some new mockups to make it clear and investigate our and your ideas.

here is what we have now
- The green button O will always be an OK or enter button (as default the selections are green to emphasise).
- the red button A will always be a back or EXIT button.
here is are some thoughts on the other buttons
- the yellow button Y will be the filter or search option (will make a mockup for this to explain).
- the blue button U should be app info or other info.
Left and right L1 and L2 could be swapping from page to page

So like in games I would present a map of the button layout when you press the blue/info button.

those are my thoughts on that

I still need to read the rest of your post, but someone needs to cook here :)

BTW, I used to post suggestions on forums and to google with ideas to improve their UI and hated never hear from them, even after they actually implemented it. SADFACE

Also, how hard would it be to implement a digital clock? I hate analog clocks (I'm 38). I don't know if you have plans for any widget support in the future, but something like a nice digital clock and a small weather widget for your area would be awesome.

@Big_viz

BAXY will launch the OUYA launcher instead of Discover when unrooted.
That's the only difference.

@RED ZMAN

Well here's the whole plan, by default we use the BAXY logo and we give the user the option to change to an OUYA logo in the settings menu. The OUYA by BAXY logo well have to wait as of this moment I don't like how it looks as a logo. Breaks the design and the strength of the logo a bit. So for the moment that's on hold.

In one Tile group we can have a mix of tiles

example of a Tile group

- on the bottom and we have 4 small tiles

So from top to bottom we have
1 big + 4 small = froms a pattern

other patterns

- 2 big
- 8 small

also changed small tweak

I've been trying out this launcher and I like it quite a bit! I've previously been using TVLauncher, which works well enough, but has several flaws, one of which is random crashes...

But this is definitely the best looking Ouya Launcher I've seen. I love the customizability and the direction this is heading. I have a few suggestions for features:

1. This one has kind of been suggested before, but I want to throw in my 2 cents. It would be nice to be able to create custom categories and manually select what apps and games go in them. For example, I'd love to be able to create a category and name it "Emulators" or "Classic Games". Then I could put my choice of Ouya and side-loaded emulators in that category. I'd also probably name a category for "Video", which contains XBMC, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc. (all the media center things). I'm sure others would probably want it to have categories for multi-player games, single-player only games, and whatnot. If you set it up kind of like Favorites, that would probably work.

2. Also, one feature of TVLauncher that I really liked was the option to have custom icons/tiles for apps. It let you select an app and gave you the option to find an image on your system (my usb ext. hard drive) and place it. I made some for my emulators so that it was easier for me and my friends to tell which emulator was which system. Most of my friends didn't know that Sega Genesis was called Mega Drive elsewhere, so they had no idea MD.emu was the Genesis emulator. I also used it to have some custom art for some of my Ouya and side-loaded apps. In addition I could also turn off the app name under the tiles for a sleeker look. If you guys can add any kind of functionality similar to that, I would love that. Here's some examples of the tiles I custom made for TVLauncher that I'd love to be able to use on Baxy:

http://oi43.tinypic.com/2poa2r9.jpghttp://oi43.tinypic.com/amtjmb.jpghttp://oi39.tinypic.com/rr7am1.jpg
http://oi41.tinypic.com/2dsrfgy.jpghttp://oi39.tinypic.com/2unwu8p.jpghttp://oi40.tinypic.com/xqken9.jpg

3. Finally, a screensaver option might be neat down the road, possibly with just a digital clock or something useful over your wallpaper or live wallpaper, and some options for how long to wait before going to a screensaver.

Keep up the great work guys!

jason

+1 for the idea of having a few "pinned" slots at the top of the screen. It'd let the user specify a few apps/games that are at the top of every screen. Selecting them would, preferably, launch them right away.

Frank, this is very impressive. I actually didn't mind the Ouya Launcher, but now that I have tried this, I now feel that this is way better, prettier, and easier to navigate around. I don't know how the rest feel, but my only recommendation would be to divide the main menu into:

Games
Emulators
Apps
Favorites
All Apps
Discover

Or

Games
Emulators
Apps
Utilities
Favorites
All Apps
Discover

Indeed, I would like to be able to keep all my apps, all my games (regardless where they came from), and all my emulators in one defined section. But that's just my opinion and I don't know how the rest who have tried this would prefer. In either case, I absolutely prefer this and plan to permanently keep it.

Great job!

Here's some examples of the tiles I custom made for TVLauncher that I'd love to be able to use on Baxy:
http://oi43.tinypic.com/2poa2r9.jpg
3. Finally, a screensaver option might be neat down the road, possibly with just a digital clock or something useful over your wallpaper or live wallpaper, and some options for how long to wait before going to a screensaver.
Keep up the great work guys!

1) We are working on folders
2) Already supported
put your custom images in /sdcard/FrankkieOuyaLauncher/thumbnails,
make sure you have the filename and size correctly ! (only works for ouya-compatible apps for now)
3) I'll put it on the feature-request list

Loving this being part of the discussion on this wonderful launcher. are you going to try to get this in the OUYA market?

Sure, but I guess the OUYA team won't be happy about this.

We need to fix a couple more bugs, and add some new features.
And than we'll consider sending it to OUYA.

Frank, this is very impressive. I actually didn't mind the Ouya Launcher, but now that I have tried this, I now feel that this is way better, prettier, and easier to navigate around. I don't know how the rest feel, but my only recommendation would be to divide the main menu into:

Games, Emulators, Apps, Favorites, All Apps, Discover
Or
Games, Emulators, Apps, Utilities, Favorites, All Apps, Discover

Indeed, I would like to be able to keep all my apps, all my games (regardless where they came from), and all my emulators in one defined section. But that's just my opinion and I don't know how the rest who have tried this would prefer. In either case, I absolutely prefer this and plan to permanently keep it.

We are working on folder support.
You can make your own categories soon.

Settings menu

first mockup just fiddling with the layout

I thought it would be nice to have an overview of your controls in BAXY

- overscan : would show a RED border
- updates : to see if your up to date and who knows a change-log
- appearance : here you could manipulate the skin

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/6n3mfulhfq1z47j/BAXY_3_small.jpg?token_hash=AAEycIPu-hFo5U4eZOoDIHo6MdqwnMOKY6WclVahMI1jmA&dl=1

an update on the BAXY mockup

menu now has a dark background like the tiles

the selection is now in the gradient instead of inside the tile, forgot the name text though

removed the the side menu / just press Y to filter
and a popup menu would appear. (less clutter)

Positioned to big tiles on to for faster navigation and for pinned or favorites.

included a icon indicator bottom left to show if a controller is connected and how many

Made the whole system resistant against to worst wallpapers, by using dark transparency backgrounds, even a white background would still work.

Looks great thijzer. If you're going to use the triggers/l1-r1 to swap between games/apps/settings you gotta add it to your menu :D

I noticed that new Home tab. That would be a good place to put the important pinned apps and widgets like weather

Xanxic,

L1-R1 to swap between the menu or the jump from page to page or with L2-R2, yeah that's possible, I have discussed it with Frank before, still need to add that to the menu.

About the home screen, I still need to work on that. It will be a bit different, the wallpaper would be more visible, it is indeed the place for your favorite apps and widgets. It's also the first screen you will see. all very similar to the typical android launcher feel form our phones.

I would hope they would be plenty happy. you've made something in a couple of weeks better than they've made it a year. it has all of the features and more, they should love having it on there. if they don't want it in their market, I guess that's really telling of what this company is becoming.

Considering their "hacker" friendly stance they should come to expect that us wanting to use a different rom or launching app in this case. They have published a few apps that require root access to run. I think as long as this does nothing it shouldn't they'll accept it. It'd be rude for them not considering how much you put into improving their os that's weak and allows no customization.

No more changes from now one.

3 images here below,
The home screen, with your favorites or pinned tiles on the bottom and widgets on the top.
The games screen got a small update, I enlarged some menu text for readability.
The pink wallpaper is an example the ANY wallpaper will hold this design.
My default wallpaper also got an update.

Hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoyed making this skin. :)

When I upgraded it, it got rid of all of my favorites and I had to reselect them. You might consider storing a user's favorites so that we won't have to reselect them every time it upgrades. I also noticed that when I created a folder in all apps, it also placed it on my favorites. I don't know if that was intentional or a bug. I believe that when I create a folder in one section, it should just stay there.

Keep up your excellent work!

Sorry about your missing favorites. Wont happen again.
All folders are always shown in all sections.
This is because they are not affected by the filters.
Not a bug, is done on purpose. Because the filters wont check apps that are in folders.

What are you downloading and how?
None of your apps show up? Really none?
- Maybe you are using the wrong filter.
- Maybe you need to let the launcher rescan the apps
(go the the screen with the clock and back to the apps list)
- Maybe, the apps you install do not have the intent-filters the launcher is looking for
(like Widgets, Software keyboards, Daydreams, Themes, XPosed framework plugins, etc)
- Maybe they are in a folder, and you forgot about it, now you can't find them.
(Apps in a folder are only in that folder)

Thanks for the response, Frank! What size do the tiles need to be to replace them with my images?

I'm really liking the latest update! I'm very impressed with how quickly you put out substantial updates.

Just a quick thought: On the digital clock, personally I'd be okay doing away with the seconds and am/pm and just having a larger "5:04" for example. I don't really need to know the seconds or time of day, myself. Maybe this could be one of the options within the digital clock? Just a personal preference anyways.

Also I think if you add that feature of swapping "BAXY" at the top for the Ouya logo, it should add Baxy down at the bottom or bottom corner somewhere, so you guys still get the credit on the home page.

This is already so much better than the Ouya launcher. I can't wait to see what's next!

Try this. Go to OUYA web browser and download a file (Lets say 40mb) from drop box. When download starts, exit out of web browser. Now you are back to BAXY launcher while it downloads. Now go to any of the Categories while your file is downloading.

Is it lagging to show anything??? For me it is. Not sure if it lags categorie apps for everyone while a sideloaded download is in the background.n

Not a big deal because I rarely download anything from drop box or web browser just letting you know.

I can't get it to list all the apps and games and keep the folder sorting. They only way to get it to show everything apps and games and sideloaded stuff is to click ALL apps. But that lists the stuff that's in the folders as well so they don't really work in that regard. And when you do all apps in favorites does that AND shows all non favorites. So it's literally showing all apps lol. A way to see all games, apps, and sideloaded while only showing favorites in favorites and maintaining folders would be great. Actually applying any filter to favorites removes it showing only favorited apps.

Also being able to hide Ouya's built in apps like advanced settings (You already gave us a shortcut to that) sound recorder and Ouya OBBslkjalf would be nice so they aren't listed, Baxy's launcher itself because I'm already in it :P. And since I'm bringing stuff up App info has never worked for me is that normal?

And you can't back out of a folder. When you hit A once it highlights the exit folder but that's not really intuitive. When you hit it twice it restarts Baxy.

And are the menu options like Games/apps/android just different filter options in a quick shortcut or is there something more to them?

Sorry to drop all this at once lol. I finally got some free time to actually take a serious look at it so I'm noticing all this now that I have some time to fool around and try to break it :3

You should select the 'exit folder' and press O.

"And are the menu options like Games/apps/android just different filter options in a quick shortcut or is there something more to them?";
The buttons on the first screen are just to select the initial filter. Nothing more to them. They all lead to the same screen.
The filter menu options are just to select the current filter.

You should select the 'exit folder' and press O.
A is back, but you don't want to go back, you want to go up.

Well that's what I was referring to. Pushing A doesn't take you up a directory it highlights exit. I was just saying that while this works it's not what you'd expect to happen.

Glad you gave it a shot. That's good enough for me ;-)

I'm working on Widget-support, so if you could make a Widget that would be great.

A problem would be: how does the launcher what app is a Emulator and what app is isnt.
(i'm not a fan of just putting a list of hard-coded package-names of known emu's in the launcher)

If the integration means changing the design of the launcher, please talk to Thijzer.

I love it! Since I have already installed the Play Store, I was able to download some more live wallpapers. My boys are thrilled with it too! I also like the idea of a joint venture between Baxy and Nostalgia.

Thanks for the update looks good.
Q: how does the Kill (Y) function work under running apps? When I press Y I get the message Superuser granted to FrankieOuyaLauncher but no apps seem to close.

Its a Bug in OUYA.
I try 3 different methods to kill an app.
All 3 work on a smartphone, all 3 fail on OUYA.
(More informaition can be found in the 2th post of this thread (under the feature requests))

Another great update, Frank! I can't believe how fast this is progressing. I'll have to try out the live wallpapers.
Some kind of interaction between Baxy and Nostalgia would be an excellent pairing.
One minor suggestion, add a white version of the Ouya logo as an option for when the background clashes with the standard orange logo (or for when someone has an orange background).

Yes, I type fast and I'm very impatient. (That explains the fast updates)
Can I see Nostalgia in action somewhere? I'm curious now :P
Will look for a white version of the OUYA Logo.

Nice work.
Just wondering can I add my own live wallpapers? If so how? And also I can't seem to access my standard wallpapers now. Any ideas?
Keep up the good work. Amazing!
Yes, you can add your own live wallpapers.
Live wallpapers are (Just like Widgets and Apps) APK-files.
Just look for a guide about sideloading and you're good to go.
(Tip: install AirDroid on your OUYA, makes sideloading easier, look on Google Play)
Can't access standard wallpapers? I guess you had another custom launcher before BAXY that had some wallpapers?
If you have a Image File, just push in to /sdcard/FrankkieOuyaLauncher/backgrounds

TempFix: (Workaround)
If you want to access the standard wallpapers,
install another Launcher that does let you access the standaard wallpapers.
Set the wallpaper in that other launcher, go back to BAXY.
This works because wallpapers are the same across all Launchers.

I'll see if I can make you access the Standard Wallpapers via BAXY.

Hi FrankkieNL,

Can you perhaps add a button to truly shutdown Ouya (like with power button on Ouya itself), as with this suspending, all external drives etc. still keep working due to fact that Ouya keeps providing current through USB devices in even in deep suspend.

Thanks.

Nostalgia 1.3 is available in the discover store. I'm currently assisting with creating a new UI on it. Idk your emulator setup but right now we are waiting on the .EMU emulators to update so the only compatible ones are FPse and Mupen64 from the store. You can still fetch metadate on the roms you have though. And the demo lets you only launch one system.

Yes, just get the APK and install it. When you goto change it live wallpapers should list it with your other live wallpapers

@Frankie
Do you need root for app info to work? Because with the update I still can't do it :/
And when I apply certain live wallpapers I get lines showing up on my screen. Like screen tears going with the animation. The nexus and black hole ones do it really bad. Is this my ouya or just a thing or...idk

Cool i'll check it out.

AppInfo has always worked perfectly on my OUYA (and every devices i tried)
I does not require root.
I have really no idea, not a single clue, why this would not work on some OUYAs.
What happens? Error message? Crash? Nothing?

I use this code:
https://github.com/frankkienl/OuyaLauncherFrankkieNL/blob/master/FrankkieOuyaLauncher/src/main/java/nl/frankkie/ouyalauncher/MainActivity.java#L167

public static void showInstalledAppDetails(Context context, String packageName) {
Intent intent = new Intent();
final int apiLevel = Build.VERSION.SDK_INT;
if (apiLevel >= 9) { // above 2.3
intent.setAction(Settings.ACTION_APPLICATION_DETAI LS_SETTINGS);
Uri uri = Uri.fromParts(SCHEME, packageName, null);
intent.setData(uri);
} else { // below 2.3
final String appPkgName = (apiLevel == 8 ? APP_PKG_NAME_22
: APP_PKG_NAME_21);
intent.setAction(Intent.ACTION_VIEW);
intent.setClassName(APP_DETAILS_PACKAGE_NAME,
APP_DETAILS_CLASS_NAME);
intent.putExtra(appPkgName, packageName);
}
context.startActivity(intent);
}

Live Wallpapers work fine for me.
If Live Wallpapers don't work correctly, its a problem with the Live Wallpaper.
There is nothing I can do, to fix it..
And all other Launchers should display it the same way.
There is no special 'enable live wallpaper' code in the Launcher.
Just this theme:

<style name="WallpapaerStyle" parent="android:Theme.DeviceDefault.Wallpaper.NoTitleBar">
</style>

@dra6onfire & @Frank,

If I understand you correct,
filtering your emulation apps from games (with a TAG system).
This would mean that you would have a group called emulation with all it's members the emulation apps.
It's basically a tag system, a feature requested before. This would group and link your apps like in a folder but as a copy.

Design wise both can be implemented easily without breaking the current design. This things could be implemented and made useful without the users knowledge.

Code wise I'm afraid the feature need a lot of time to work on.
Frank has to agree where to invest that time into.

Yeah, Nostalgia is great. I'm not going to lie, as much as I love the games for Ouya, the man reason I got one was emulating all my favorite games on one console - from DOS through N64 and everything in between. Even though it's still in its early stages, Nostalgia does a great job of bypassing the differing emulator interfaces and provides a one-stop library for most of your emulated games, plus the original box art.

I had a little trouble getting the USB driver working right to get root but once done Baxy is great! Very happy with it! I'm going to get a couple live wallpapers and try them out since the bubble's is working fine. Everything works fine thus far. The only suggestion I would have which is cosmetic and no big deal would be to be able to adjust the size of the menu bar's and/or replace them with our own icons. An option to remove the clock and BAXY/Ouya from home screen would be nice too. Your hard work is appreciated! :-)

Edit: I got Aquarium Live Wallpaper v3.0. Run's perfect and looks great.

Hey Michael,

Changing the menu to recognizable icons requires a skin support. Right now because of the complexity, time, and code-changes skinning would mean to the project, we won't provide this feature until all other smaller features are addressed and the design I made gets an full implementation. After that, we could consider skin support, but again understand the complexity of good skin support.

OIC, well, it's all good. Does having a switch to turn off the Ouya/BAXY label and clock require skin support? Having turned the Ouya on and off a few times now I noticed that Baxy doesn't save the superuser command to shut down. Or did I not install superuser right? It ask every time for permission. Suppose this might be covered in this thread somewhere. Hadn't look.

Messed around with some live wallpapers. Pretty neat just to have the option to change backgrounds. Kind of strange Ouya didn't have this option from the start?

Here is a custom folder tile (for emulation) I made it so it matches OUYA's tiles.

This custom tile can be selected when you create a folder.

My question to you guys, what kind of custom tiles do you want me to include to the system and please stay general, "pics of mom" is not an option. :)

You can also provide me with the background.

I did specify that making icons from the menu would need skin support, to all your other suggestions
-switch the BAXY/OUYA logo and clock off - could be easily implemented, and we might include that, I don't see a problem here.

I figured out the Superuser problem. It was within the Superuser settings. Turned off notice's and log's. Now Baxy does not ask permission every time to close down or go to discover.

And thanks for your support thijzer! Appreciate it! I am extra happy with my Koi swimming around and having figured out the permission thing.
This is much better than other products I have tried.

BAXY Launcher will still be your default launcher after an update.
(At least, that was the case with the previous update)

You can start the Stock Launcher (and monitor their menus) by going to All Apps and selecting 'OUYA Launcher'.

That must be a problem with Script Manager.
Script Manager has an onBootReceiver.
That should work no matter what launcher you use.

The only time I had an issue like that was when I had installed another Launcher,
and set the wallpaper using that other Launcher.
(was this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.frankkie.home)

I use:
.suggestDesiredDimensions(1920,1080);
to make sure wallpapers won't be magnified. (without that line, they would be magnified very badly)

Try setting the wallpaper again.

That is because you're not supposed to do that.
Just pick an initial filter (games, apps, android apps) and change the filter in that screen ( Y )
instead of going back to the first screen.
That is a lot faster.

The applist screen needs to load all the images for the applications.
And even though we use thumbnails, it still needs to be loaded and that takes time.

Yeah sorry I forgot to reply when you asked me about it when I had this.

Absolutely nothing happens when you push U. There isn't an error or a noise. Not sure how to check Logcat

My workaround for now is to press the ouya home button. A menu pops up where game info is present as a choice.

Hey Realz,

You referring to the button style on the current running version right? It's not hard to do. But we will eventually leave the current design and move to a different one. If I find the time I'll do a more designed version for it.

I'm using this without root access, and I have to say I'm very impressed.

One thing though, the kill application function really needs to be implemented, after loading a few applications it slows the console down considerably, and apps do not function properly.

I've also noticed some games (Example: Vector) have a lot of lag when ran through the launcher.

I think that's just vector. It's always stuttered/lagged for me long before I installed Baxy

Killing apps does not work. This must be a bug in OUYA.
When you prss the kill button, hte launcher will try to kill the selected app with 3 different methods.
All 3 methods fail on ouya, but all 3 methods work fine on almost every other android device.
So theres nothing i can do.
Please read the 3th post of this thread, click the spoiler button to view the sourcecode of the killing.

Try uninstalling BAXY, than re-installing BAXY.
When installing is done, double-tap OUYA-button.

We'll give it a try, the strange thing was it asked me on the very first version (frankkie launcher) and I selected "just once" in case I wasn't happy with it. Now that I want it, it doesn't give me the option lol

UPDATE

I have pushed the new Update.
The new version is called: 9-1.0.3

Changes:
- Fixed AppInfo (U);
- Removed KILL button from Running apps (because killing does not work, Bug in OUYA);
- Added feedback system; (Please add your email address so we can respond!)
- You can now see the version in the Settings Screen;
- Fixed height of Clock;
- Bugfix;
- Added Beta-system;

And I have also pushed the first official Beta !
The beta is called: 10-1.0.4-beta
Changes:
- Added experimental Widgets Support. (really really beta, not stable)

If you are feeling lucky, you can enable Beta-version in the Settings Screen.

"Why widgets?" you ask.
Simple: to be able to customize your clock, using a widget.

So I updated the Ouya System, then because it's the default launcher it went to Baxy and I updated that, but now I can't get into it at all. After updating it asked which launcher to use Always or Just Once, but every time I try to open it I get a popup saying "Unfortunately, FrankkieOuyaLauncher has stopped." Same with Baxy in the Play menu in the Ouya Launcher.

I had never had this issue before this last update, but afterwards mine was doing the same.

To clear the Default status of the OUYA launcher, go to Manage > System > Advanced and go to Apps.

By default, it'll show you Downloaded apps. Highlight one in the list and go right twice, that'll show the entire list of apps.
From there you can choose OUYA Launcher and go down to Clear defaults.

There's been an issue with the latest version on github. Frank has to rebuild the apk file in order to fix it. It's not major so the fix won't take long but at this moment Frank went to bed. So expect an update soon.

Sorry for the inconvenience, in the future a stable version will not be able to break that easily. The beta-stable system just got implemented, ones the system is more mature, stable versions will only be created after enough beta testing.

The new version also allows users to test experimental features in beta. After enough feedback and testing we will move stable code to the stable master branch.

I hope you guys can live without BAXY for a few moments.

Greets,
Thijs

I will note however, I'm on the beta and if I move around real quick in the settings menu, I'm getting a flickering like effect.

I downloaded a few widgets from the Amazon app store, kind of impressed with how well the Amazon app store works on this system. Anyways, a few of them worked perfectly, but one of the free ones, American flag widget, doesn't allow you to put the thing. You selected from the widget menu and the screen flashes up and goes away quickly.

I was thinking of putting an American flag, a clock widget, and the New Mexican flag. Just to see how it looked.

Should I just uninstall/reinstall?

Know what would be nice? Sound. The original Xbox had a faint sound in the background, something SciFi. Something like this as an option looping behind the scene would be awesome. Optional of course.

BAXY Launcher works really well for me now, great work and thumbs up!

Only thing i noticed, don't know if it's meant to be: If i change the clock analog/digital or the logo baxy/ouya the change is shown directly at selection but only applies to the launcher if i the restart the launcher.

And how do i add apps to Favorites? (Maybe i'm too sleepy to see it right now but i couldn't find an option)

Once again, great work. Has absolutely replaced the standard launcher for me.

There are some websites that have free music, not illegal, but free that you can download if you wish. Let me see if I can find a few examples of something that might work. Actually, something that might work perfectly is a ringtone. You would just have to have the volume down and something mellow. Ringtones loop and usually match up at the beginning and end.

Cool! Well since you're talking about implementing menu music, I'd like to suggest that in a future version you can have the option to select your own custom menu music from your system/usbdrive if possible. I would totally set it to Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country. :wink-new:
