I posted in Hacks and Mods that I was going to start making custom cases. I wanted to move here to let everyone know and follow progress in case people do not look into that subforum. (Mod if you want moved no problem).

Little Overview:
The ouya is designed to be modded and made your own. So why not a custom case. However to make 1 case would cost the price of a 3d printer + material (and of course time and learning how to use printer). So myself and a friend have started the process to make some cases for the ouya community.

Where we are at:
Currently we have a few ideas on cases (Will list ideas below). Those ideas will be made into 3d cad renderings and posted very soon. I have a kickstarter campaign started and almost ready for submission. This will help us with any up front costs.

Ideas:
1) Basic colored case
2) Case with etched (or see through) username/gamertag. I think the See through would look nice and make it light up inside.
3) Case with built in dock for 2.5" hard drive and usb hub
4) Tardis (Probably can't call it a tardis so it will be a police box) and companion cube.
5) Still working on design, but a NES/SNES themed case.
6) Controller sides

I would love to hear any feedback that everyone has. Any requests.

Make it open, release the source files and upload to the many 3D printing service websites.

Once the basic inner dimensions are worked out there can be much easy modding of the files for custom cases :) Great idea!

I love the idea of a slot for a HD etc. Maybe one with brackets to hold pads?

Yes, we will keep all the designs open source just like the Ouya is

A case with a usb hub would be cool but you'd have to decide on which hub it supported. Personally I'd like something really technical looking, like a Borg cube.

I want an original gameboy case. It will of course be a bit scaled up to fit the OUYA insides, but it should be true to the original even at a different scale.

That would be something I would use.

I like the NES idea, N64 would look cool too. Like the idea of built in dock to hold HDs, a built in controller dock would be cool too. Also love the idea of etching/adding in gammer tags to make them personal.

I want a NES-styled case where you can pop open the hatch that the game would have slid into and slide in a 2.5" sata harddrive, a USB Hub Where the contoller ports would have been

still wanting!

Custom cases would be a cool idea, don't know if you would make much money though as being for a $99 console you would have to sell the cases for a pretty low price to make it feasible for the consumer.

A lego-compatble case!
Also, I hope you intend the NES case to be able to slot an HD like you slot a cartridge on the front-loader

Sorry everyone for the delayed reply, had a lot of stuff come up over weekend.

I am not looking to make a lot of money. In fact breaking even after time and parts is fine enough for me. If I wind up making a bit extra, awesome.

As mentioned, I want to make all the designs open source and be able to make custom designs for people. All the designs will be posted so those that already have access to 3d printer will be able to print them themselves. Others will be able to either purchase a pre-made design or I can work with them to make a special one.

Based on parts, it will probably be around $25-35 shipped for US (International shipping will be worked out but available). For the more advanced cases probably $50-100. Obviously for a $100 console, this may seem expensive. However being that the console is so cheap, will make it more attractive (At least to me) to be able to spend a bit extra to personalize it.

Anyway I have most of the forms all filled out on kickstarter and we are trying to make sure the CAD drawings will work. As soon as everything gets squared away I will post links for more info. We will probably start with about 3 designs but will keep on designing and providing options. Love the ideas posted so far.

Hey all. Looking for someone that would like to help out on the project. I am looking for someone with CAD experience and able to make 3d renderings. Please message me for more info.

A gamecube case would be great! Also, it should be easy to desing, as it is a cube too, just make it smaller

Great idea for HDD space! I'm thinking phat ps2 style where you slide in the bottom section. Maybe controller stands would be easy to do too.

Borg Cube?

That's a great idea!

I found Lego instructions for sale as well as a couple models online. Plus, a 3ds file: http://tf3dm.com/3d-model/star-trek-borg-cube-47772.html

I also have the original [?] block tin and red mushroom tin. Too cool to resist. The candy didn't last very long though.:lemo::watermelon::apple:
