I needed a break from the daily grind. So I made a simple couch game. 4 player splitscreen/topdown-shooter with mid-size level. Doesn't look like much, buts its a nice start to a on screen multiplayer framework.


when I have extra time, I will continue to develop it. hopefully it will turn out to be a fun little project.

After 20minutes of work today

Image looks dull but it is quite bright on the screen.

My Thoughts

I think it will be a circle vs circle (UFO) fast-pace shooter,
it will have power ups for speed, cannons, shields, missiles, size, cloaking.
The map will be 1600x1600 pixels, or 3200x3200 pixels.
Probably add some teleporters.
using simple vbos to draw at the moment with no culling.
currently 60fps at 1080p, but high draw calls at 1032, many ways to fix this, too lazy at the moment will wait to optimize later.
using box2d(overkill) might try chipmunk for fun, could roll my own physics but I want this to be a quick project.
I think it will be done with no textures just drawing
current using my deaddark map editor, but probably will make a simple mapeditor later.

Didn't have time to work on it in the afternoon but played for a bit and thought about it a lot.

Going try these 8 basic power ups for starter.


I am going to have to figure out how to sync my ps3 controllers because only have 2 OUYA controllers.

So I put the gun/canon power-ups in, they all work well.

Defense Power-Ups:

Shield : +50 health, Damage comes off the shield first
Speed : 2x speed increase for you ship
Cloaking : invisible to other players
mini : 33% chance that bullets miss you

I have a question about defense power-ups, should I make them stackable or should they replace each other?

example: You can have a "speed" power-up with a "shield" power-up.

edit: Made the defense power ups stackable, makes you almost invincible. I guess its a race to get power ups now :)

Here are all the power ups. Every time a ship gets destroyed a power-up spawns on the board at random location.

edit: 8 hours of work (Burnt most of the day on it)

1. Added guided missiles, high explosive missiles, and lasers beams (all one shot kills)
2. Added basic AABB culling on objects, dropped draw calls from 1200 to 200.
3. Should still move the level-drawing over to a individual vbo with and index buffer. This would probably put draw calls at <30.
4. Fixed some bugs in my box2d code
5. Added/Slowed down fire-rate on the ship cannons.

Really enjoying making this :)
