[EDITED]

I wanted to open a thread about my upcoming game on OUYA, codenamed "Project Light". Not much informations sorry, just wanted to show some screenshots and get a little feedback :p

Project Light is a modern 3D turn-based Japanese-style RPG, set in a underground cyberpunk world ruled by a fierce empire. It is my second game on OUYA, after the 3D arcade racing game Night Riders (available now).

Developed using the popular game engine Unity (my first time using it), it is still at a prototype level. I will try to update this thread every week or 2 showing the progress made on the game.

Thanks for reading :)

Like where you're going so far though there isn't much like you said.
But JRPGs will always get my attention.

@jeffry84: Thanks :3

@RiotingSpectre: Thanks for visiting my DeviantArt ^^ I will upload more artworks from the game there soon.

@Killswitch: I'm actually a total Unity noob :p "Night Riders" was made using my own engine, I started using Unity less than 2 months ago, and it is so simple to use and so much powerfull than any engine I would code myself ;)

HUGE fan of the particle effects and dynamic camera angles. Really excited about this.

bakanekofr
05-16-2014, 01:09 PM
@Killswitch : No this is not the final look of the game yet, I'm thinking in getting a rendering asset for Unity (Skyshop) that will boost the rendering quality, though I don't think it will be usable in the OUYA build. The other option is to wait for Unity 5 and its new rendering engine. Currently I'm using a single simple shader for everything, so there is enough room for improvement ;)

@Hugo : Thanks ^^

06-01-2014, 06:08 PM
Thanks for your interest in my project :)

Actually, I've started working with freelancers for the 3D assets. So expect a quality boost in the next shots ! (The 3D backgrounds and characters in the current shots are made by me). The bad news is that we are basically remaking everything, and as these artists are not full time on the project, this will take some time...

I'm also looking for a 2D illustrator to remake my drawings, and maybe a sound / music designer if I'm not satisfied by what I will produce.

My goal right now is to make a fully working part of the game, with a high quality finish, and then make an IndieGoGo campaign, with this playable demo as a proof of what we are capable of. If the founding is successful, this will allow the whole game to be done by these artists, and maybe even more !

So, I'm sorry but don't expect new shots for at least 2 to 4 weeks... In the meantime, you can try Night Riders :D

RiotingSpectre
06-01-2014, 09:12 PM
You say all this like it's bad news but there's nothing wrong if you try your hardest to release the best game you can. I take this as all good news despite nothing being group that cares about visuals in the slightest. There are people such as elizabitcrusher (https://soundcloud.com/elizabitcrusher) who may be interested in being just what you need. She has a diverse library of music she does so make sure to listen to her samples. It also doesn't hurt to look at the rest of soundcloud.

Killswitch
06-01-2014, 09:55 PM
When it comes to RPGs, bigger and better are always positives.

Elizabitcrusher, I like some of her stuff and there are others here. But Unity collaboration section has a few that have some nice stuff, I have 2 pieces I may or may not use from there. I probably will but for different games than they were intended. But you may want to step into the paid job section for guys who are ready to roll.

Search the Unity forums before you search Soundcloud just because the amount of stuff on Soundcloud will have you buried in no time. There is definitely good stuff there though.

I can put up the 2 I got but both guys are too busy to do new work. One is going to do the theme of one of my games that got backburnered.

It looks a lot better now but to tell you the truth I'd be pleased either way. Really not a visuals type of person and solely rely on gameplay experiences. I have a couple of questions for you now that I've seen a up to date screenshot.

1. Is the game's overworld centered around snow and will snow always be something you'd see? If so then how will cyberpunk come into play?
2. Is there a combat mechanic that's in another game that you can draw comparisons too?
3. Will there be plans for a new game plus content that will bring more replay value? An example would be a hidden final boss, starting over with all your equipment with the enemies gaining a huge boost in strength, and all those other things.

bakanekofr
06-03-2014, 02:03 AM
@RiotingSpectre:

1. No, this is just of a part of the game, there will be more environment types. I don't want to spoil but you'll be surprised :)
2. The combat system is not yet playable, but it will be similar to classic turn-by-turn J-RPGs. I have not yet decided the specifics of this game.
3. Not decided yet, but this could be a good idea, noted ;)

I've started testing the game on the PlayStation Vita using the Unity for PSM program. After a few optimizations, the game is running in full resolution at around 30 FPS. I didn't try it on OUYA yet, but I expect the game to have a similar look and performances. Here's some shots :

Thanks everyone :)

Today I've started testing Project Light on the OUYA (at last :p ), and the result is quite promising. The game runs at around full framerate (60 FPS) in qHD resolution, quite good, it is even smoother than Night Riders :p (45 FPS in qHD).

The only problem I have now with the OUYA port is that I have a Unity Pro license, that includes the Vita Pro and Desktop Pro add-ons, but not Android Pro. So, many graphical effects are disabled, and even some important features like IK animations are not available.

I have three options now, either release it on OUYA as it is (Android Free), purchase the pro add-on (not possible for me now, too expensive, same price as Unity Pro, around 1500$ !), or search for free alternative for every Unity Pro features (which will require a lot of time, might even be impossible for some features). For now, I think I'll go with the first option.

Here's a screenshot of the game taken directly from my OUYA (Android Free):

As is as in without all of the fancy stuff mentioned when the game is completed.

@bakanekofr: That screenie doesn't look bad, I still like it. And is that the actual screen size or was it reduced to it?

Outlander999

cool work, bakaneko!
I hope you can solve the "puzzle" of the not available plugins, the game seems promising.

bakanekofr
07-19-2014, 04:04 PM
@Killswitch: Sorry, by "as it is" I just meant using Android Free rather than purchasing the Pro add-on. The game is far from complete, actually I'm thinking in releasing it in multiple chapters, as the whole game is quite ambitious. So, I might release the first chapter before the end of the year, and this will help me get feedback, and fund the rest of the game.
For the features I'm missing, many graphics effects such as colors correction, and some animation stuff like IK, that I'm using in many places. I could replace that with custom animations, but this will require a lot of work, it is so simple with IK...

@Sluup: Thanks, yes this is a direct screen capture from the OUYA took with ADB via USB, then downsized to 640x360px for the forum.

@Outlander999: Thanks ^^

bakanekofr
07-19-2014, 11:11 PM
Thanks for the link ^^

Final IK looks really powerful, but a bit expensive, not as expensive as the Android Pro license anyway :p

By the way, I too have purchased a lot of assets thanks to the 24H deals temptation, most of which I will probably never use :D

Killswitch
07-19-2014, 11:19 PM
There is also Simple IK which is $2.
https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/14938

I never used Final IK but I have it and a lot of other stuff....

But there are options, so hopefully these can help with what you need. But if you have enough of a demo, Kickstarter may work.

One-man Parisian studio neko.works is working on a 3D turn-based Japanese-style RPG under the code name “Project Light.”

There are few details about the game but the screenshots certainly make it an attractive little project, as you can see above and below – you can find more screenshots on its website too.

What is known about the game is that it is set “in a underground cyberpunk world ruled by a fierce empire.” It seems that you play as a girl called Haru, who teams up with a “Mysterious Girl” to fight against the oppressors and police forces of the cyberpunk world.

Other than that, we know that this is the second project from neko.works, with the first one being the 3D arcade motorbike racing game Night Riders.

The plan is to bring Project Light to Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as Android and iOS, and PlayStation Vita, OUYA, Amazon Fire TV, and GameStick in 2015. These platforms are all confirmed.

On top of that, neko.works is hoping to bring the game to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U as well. It will be available in English, French, and Japanese once done.

Every time I check this thread, I'm treated to progress reports and love. I don't think we've discussed this yet, but what is the intended retail price for the OUYA version?

Thanks!

For the price of the OUYA version, not yet fixed, but I'm planning for a price in the 5$ -> 8$ range.

Hi guys :)

Sorry for not posting on this thread for a while. The development is progressing, I've released the first public video of the game recently, it's just a teaser but, you can check it out on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MYJeKoEbwU

Now for the release plan, basically, there will be 2 versions of the game: The first one is targeting the PS4, XB1, Wii U and PC, and will be released around December 2015. It is just the PC version, with a few parameter change for the consoles.

The second version is targeting the Vita, Mobile and Mobile based micro-consoles (including OUYA). This version is based on the first one, but with baked lighting, and highly optimized assets and effects. Planned release in early 2016.

Just wanted to update you guys about the current plan. Sorry to not be able to release the game on OUYA day one, it would be quite hard for me to develop and maintain these two versions at the same time.

The official website has changed quite a bit, now with a few videos from the battles. You can check it out here: http://neko.works/projectlight

Thanks :)

I'm just speechless. By the look of your intro and a few seconds of ingame footage, it looks like the kind of game I hungered for for a very long time.

Just take my money already! It's about time we got something this awesome on the Ouya. Not saying there aren't any good games, but this looks awesome!

I was going to post it the other day but figured I'd give you the chance to do it. People needed some reasons to get their minds off the other stuff. Looks good. I need to work on my intro...

Hey everyone, it has been a while! 2 years? :)

Just wanted to update you about my works and plans.

First, I've released the successor to my arcade racing game Night Riders, which is called Super Night Riders. It improves on the original OUYA game in every aspect. It's now available on Steam (Windows, Mac and Linux) and Xbox One.

My 3D JRPG Project Light is now called Light Fairytale. It has been in development since March 2014, and I now plan to release it around March 2018 - 4 years in development, though you can subtract 1 year dedicated to the development and maintenance of Super Night Riders. The game now has a Steam coming soon page, so please check it out and add it to your wishlist to not miss the release!

I'm also planning a 3rd game called Dark Fairytale, though it is still in the early stages of development and won't release for a while.

As you can see, I'm currently focusing on Steam and Xbox One only. I do plan to support PS4 and Switch starting next year, but quite honestly, I doubt I will support anything mobile based anymore.

This is probably the last time I post on these forums, so if you care about my works, please bookmark or follow me:
