View Full Version : Cold Air Intake Mod

I've decided to embark upon yet another modification to my Ouya: A cold air intake modification to the case that will allow cooler outside air to be brought in right over the system's heat sink fan.

First I had to find something to use as a duct.
In this case another piece of industrial scrap in the form of a flanged sleeve bushing made of brass:

Test fits:

The corner post over the fan is going to have to be removed to make room for the duct, so I cut it out at the base with a large pair of cutters and then snipped through the sheet metal holding the post in place.
A little more trimming removed the rest of the plastic from this area:

I then covered the enclosure in masking tape to protect it from getting scratched up while the holes are being made and used a square to establish where the drilling will start.
Note the tiny mark in the tape made by the scribe. That's where the hole will be made:

Close enough for government work! :)
The round mark you see in the center of the drilled hole is the center of the plastic fan being illuminated by a flashlight.

The stage is now set for punching the larger hole for the duct, which I'll have to do at work.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 2

When it's done, silly.
Replacement LED color is still being decided.

Pick a color expecting it to be lighter. I bought a red LED and it looks pink.

PART 2

After taking my Ouya enclosure to work I drilled my pilot hole out and made the first punch.

I tried to get some shots in better light showing all my mods so far including a view of the fan, but it is difficult without real lighting

So there you go, one cold air intake modification to a stock Ouya enclosure!
With the fan drawing in fresh air from outside the case it effectively pressurizes it and air now exits through the top and bottom vents.

Next: LED!

Thanks!
To be honest I haven't done a lick of before/after, nor am I sure of where to find a utility that will run on Ouya and tell me the temps.
I'm open to suggestions as I have a completely stock 16GB model to compare it to.
It took almost 20 minutes of HD video for the fan to turn on if that's any indication.

Okay I installed XBMC on both my modded and stock Ouyas and ran the same 45-minute HD video on each, noting the temperatures before and after running the video.

Modded Ouya:
Before 122F
After 136F

Stock 16GB Ouya:
Before 128F
After 144F

Now if only you could power the Ouya without the cord for max portability. Hackers wet dream. Great job dude.
